Are Rhodesian Ridgebacks Easy to Train?

- No! And despite all the fun photos and videos I post, we're always working on some kind of training - failing in new and spectacular ways each day. I'm often asked about the behavioral challenges of training off-leash so I put together this longer video of our imperfect efforts to corral Zero's alpha tendencies.
If you're struggling with your own dog's behavior, I hope you find the video a helpful reminder that even D-list famous Ridgebacks aren't all they might seem. If you aren't struggling with your dog's behavior, well then just feel free to enjoy watching one man's flailing attempts at taming the chaos!

My 18 month old Ridgeback Akela gets on with all dogs in the park. She's very gentle with little dogs. She is my special girl. Some owners are surprised when there dog doesn't play with other dogs but plays with mine. That's how social and sweet she is. She has a chihuahua friend. So cute watching her play
Our 9 month old is pure hell on wheels! But we enjoy every bit of it. They are loyal but very stubborn.

I posted here 2 years ago saying we were considering getting a Ridgeback…… well we did. He is now 3 years old and called Dexter. Everything shown in this video we have experienced and it’s been wonderfully challenging. Sadly Dexter has developed bone cancer and will not make four years old which is going to break my heart in two. We will get another dog eventually and it WILL be a Ridgeback ❤ Thanks for the inspiration😊
Next time ask the breeder for medical records from the grand parents and ask what DNA test have been done. Ask for Penn Hip tests. OFA misses a lot. If a dog is not excellent they will have issues.

Hello. Years ago I had a male “intact” ridgeback. Far and away, the most challenging, and smartest, dog I ever met. And the most beautiful. Cooper ran 7 1/2 miles just about every day with either me or my husband. It was the only way to tire him out. And boy did he love me. One early evening we went out for a run and a pack of four dogs came to greet us. Cooper circled and circled me, as these dogs do when hunting lion, and would not let those other dogs near me. Maybe they wanted to play, but Cooper was in protect mode. I loved that dog. Dominos Pizza delivery guy wasn’t so keen on him though. He’d ring the bell and then go stand by the curb and wait for me to come get the pizza. Cooper was just too big and barked too loud! It was hilarious. It’s been years but I still miss that dog. And btw, birthday balloons were vicious and had to be attacked. Go figure.
Such a great video. Showing Z & P’s “failures” is truly helping RR owners with their occasional “failures” - it’s group therapy 😅. But seriously, you’re a great owner. Well done 👍🏻

Look at Zero making himself bigger than other dogs, telling them “I’m the boss, you got something to say about it?” Great video. Glad you’re showing RR’s are not meant for everyone. The first time I saw my boy and his siblings play, I thought all hell was breaking loose. Lol
My 3yr old neutered male still stands over other dogs, chest out. Really challenging. As soon as a little dog barks it ends with squealing. Most days he's perfect and gentle but as soon as a little fluffy white dog growls... drives me nuts! The only way I've managed to sort is, a tremendous amount of exercise and regular overdosing of other dogs - which isn't possible every day.
"Encroaching on personal space" is a characteristic of Ridgeback behaviour I was not expecting but have come to love about them. I grew up having a ridgeback on every street here in Africa. I had a weekly encounter with one Ridgeback who'd bite my heels to get my shoe and make me late for class. With a Ridgeback of my own now I love how he comes to me and then leans all his wait into me so I have to stop and love him.

I had a Ridgeback when I was a teenager and watching your little failures has made me feel so much better about the struggles we had with ours. She was an amazing dog but we had some intense moments before we learned to read her body language.

Thank you, I needed this this morning I was in tears all way home from our walk, Jake is 9 months old and everytime we go out if I allow him off the lead he runs off doesnt listen at all and get involved with everyone. He wants to play and say hello to everything that moves.
It embarrasing and depressing and makes me not want to walk him off the lead ever, but he needs to run and let out that energy.
I have tried everything, amazing treats, puppy classes, praise, playing with toys, taking a ball, I am about to try a whistle. He just doesnt come back at all. It's mega stressfull and makes me so cross and unwanted/ dreading our walks.
He rareley goes off thelad now.

Why dont you go to a dog area that is fenced in when no one is there might mean getting up super early thou
I can highly recommend not letting your dog off the leash yet but to use a 16 to 30 ft long leash with a harness (NEVER with a collar for safety reasons!!) to train your dog „off the leash“ without losing control or him running away. The leash must not be too heavy. We use a biothane leash.
I’ll say exactly what « Stef Anie » said. Over the past 3 months I have taught my father-in-law's dog to come back when I call him. He is a 5 year old Labrador. For that I used a 12 meter leash and a harness. You must not hold the leash, but let it slide on the ground behind the dog. When you feel that your dog is too far away, you call him, if he doesn't answer, you put your foot on the leash to stop him. Then you have to pull gently on the leash to encourage it to come towards you. Once towards you, you must congratulate him! (Toy , treat, stroke ...) I worked with the Labrador for 3 consecutive months doing this exercise twice a day. Now he responds really well when called ! For me this is the best method to use when the dog is no longer a "puppy" and no longer instinctively follows its owners. Try this technique ! Good luck !

Totally agree. We have 2 females currently, but had a male a few years ago. It's like looking into a mirror when we watch your videos. You are such a patient owner. Ridgebacks are such rough players as you know and as you said, they are not for most people or understood by other dogs and/or their owners. Taking them to the dog park can be/is a challenge not only for the other dogs that are there, but their owners can be really challenging and not always forgiving. We keep trying; however finding the right time has been really difficult.

Really appreciate your channel. I have a 3 month old ridgeback and have never loved an animal as much as him. Needing all the knowledge available on living alongside this beautiful breed.
Our Ridgeback Apollo is a breeze off leash with excellent recall and a good sense of matching up with other high energy pups. However, on leash he has redirected leash aggression when passing other dogs, aka tantrums from the frustration of not being able to greet or play as they would normally off leash. This is our reoccurring challenge. Great Video!
There's always something! Penny is similar to Apollo and can get very high energy on leash when seeing other dogs. I've had success bringing high value treats on all our walks to help redirect her. When I have the treats she's fantastic, when I don't, not so much! Always more to be done...

Love the narration and camera work. My dog is intact male (very dominant to other dominant males). And i totally agree with daily training. It's always work in progress.

It depends. They're extreamly clever, but that's a double edged sword sometimes. I have to trick my 6 months old rhodie to think that what I want her to do it's what she wants. Needless to say that she outsmarts me all the time.

Our family adopted a 2 year old female Ridgeback about a year ago. She is a beautiful intelligent friendly sometimes stubborn dog. We have learned much over the past year. Thank God we have a lot of land!
Your channel was a huge part of us adding a ridgeback to our family - he is now a 5 month, 65lb puppy that like to play his “ wild jumping crazy running” ridgeback way with our two other older dogs - it was an adjustment alright ...lol 😂 - However, we could not be happier with his personality and how he responds to training. We still wonder how he will be fully grown so thanks for sharing - it’s interesting to see that even your great dogs on camera can have there days 😉
Lauge Nielsen same! I was reassured to get a RR after finding his old channel when it was just him and Eco. I’ve learned so much from the videos. My Ridgeback is now 3 years old and he still my dream dog. He is such a good boy and recalls more often than not 😉 although his playing style often gets ignored by other dogs which leaves him disappointed 😂
Enjoy your time with your RR puppy! While mine becomes an adult now seems like, I miss the “smaller” puppy days with him.

Love this. On our walks, my RR will get aggressive and start jumping very high when he sees other dogs approach. In calmer greetings, he will smell the other dog and assert himself by standing tall and upright, then lean his head over the other dog's head, if he is in a mischievous mood, he will thrust his head and body against the other dog, to antagonize it. Oddly, i have never seen my RR mount another dog to display dominance. However, my lab will mount my RR, and the lab is the only dog my RR will allow to dominate him, but not without some frenzied chasing to go with it.
I'm glad you showed this, mine was just like this, any dog that wanted to be the alpha he had to get into that silly standoff. A found breaking his fixation worked and the thing that worked best was a dog whistle. After a while a short sharp normal whistle worked. They are literally obsessed with showing they are in charge.
I've actually never thought to try a dog whistle, but I've considered developing an "emergency" recall whistle I only use with high value treats in situations like this. May have to get to work on that!

❤️Oh yeah. My boy is 13-1/2, can barely hear, and has some doggie dementia, but still goes all alpha when we pass other dogs. In terms of triggers, one thing has always been true of him: If he's tired or a little sore, he doesn't want to be touched -- not by humans, not by dogs. Such a grump. Toughest dog ever, in terms of my vigilance outside the home (hell, inside too), but he's also engendered the deepest love.
Greatly appreciate you sharing this Will. Seeing everybody else’s highlight reel can leave a person feeling like they’re the only ones having a hard time. I have to say though l am relieved my Archer is not intact, he is such a calm boy, no ‘alpha’ behaviour whatsoever and l think it definitely helped him be more receptive to his training.
My dogs are perfectly behaved. On the internet. When I can edit clips. In real life, as always, it's a much messier endeavor!

This is such an important and nice video! We have been enjoying your blog since our own Ridgeback joint us years ago. This weekend he will become a big brother to our second ridgeback and we cannot be more thrilled. I wanted to ask you as well what nail grinder do you use? We tried a few ones but they are not powerful enough and just frustrate me and Sherlock haha thanks!

You are so right... Rhodesian Ridgebacks aren't the right dog for most people. A Ridgeback needs someone who is ready to commit lots of time for them, go running and enjoy looong walks. Mine is a rescue Ridgeback and he is wonderful. Please consider to rescue instead of getting a puppy. TIRR rescue in Texas (just search for it on the Internet) is a very experienced rescue organization and Texas unfortunately has lots of Ridgebacks in shelters because people found they aren't ready for a Ridgeback. Give them a chance if you play with the idea of getting a Ridgeback. Check out TIRR !!!
I rescued my RR at 11month from a shelter. They are one of the most common dogs here in Africa. The love this dog has for me is overwhelming and so welcome. I have to be a stay at home mom for him.
do not own a Ridgeback (but am thinking of owning one) but Love all of your videos anyways. It's dogs having fun what is there not to love. In fact if you substitute "Ridgeback" for my dogs names I would swear this video was about my 2 dogs. This vid regardless of what breed a person has, is great for encouraging all dog owners whenever they are struggling, not to give up, keep plugging away and relish in any and all successes. keep the vids coming they are great! especially this one
I hear you. Owning a dog is a relationship commitment. RR are full of love and loyalty but have no clue how powerful they are or how big their teeth and claws are. They are big and look slim and sporty but you will yell every time they stand on your foot. Their gentle is far from our gentle. They are a bowl you over with love breed.
@@hall2home understand completely what you mean about "their gentle is far from gentle", as my 2 dogs are a Dobermann and American Staffordshire Terrier, both are very obedient, loving, eager to please and try their best to be "gentle", but as you say their gentle is not always gentle, but they try so hard to be "gentle"

I have a pit ridgeback mix that is so sweet to my wife and I but as soon as we hook up her leash she goes nuts! She is such a handful at times but we love every bit of it.

Our boy’s nick name was “Damn You!” for the first 2 years. A run in the park a few times a week and plenty of attention at home and this will be the most low-maintenance dog you’ll ever own. Once he hit 2 years old he just followed the kids from room to room and laid down wherever they were playing. Do NOT pretend wrestle with kids in front of these dogs! They won’t bite but they will slam into you and pin you in a corner. 😬 Best dog we’ve ever owned!

My Ridgeback Akela is my second rhodesian Ridgeback. I've had dogs all my life . But when I got my first Ridgeback Nayla I thought I'd bid off more than I could chew. I got a shock. She taught me a lot. But all worked out well. She and my daughter grew up together they were the same age.
I’m on my 7th and 8th RRidgie and I’ve been able to teach them all to beg, sleep under the covers and cling like wool socks.
i live this every day... and love it :) just wish we could extend their lives... mine's 9 now
How much is their average life span based on your anecdotal or actual experience?
Great commentary from an honest owner. I've run into many people who claim RRs are some of the biggest problems at dog parks, and the starters of fights. That includes pit bull owners. Hard to know if you aren't a witness and even then, you have to really understand body language to tell; something a lot of dog owners are clueless about. Clearly you aren't clueless.
At least you seem to be able to take them there. My kelpie is not a candidate because he doesn't like other dogs and if P & Z were to bound up, he'd be the first to snap and pounce and give them the shake down. That said, a lot of trainers hate dog parks for all the potential trouble, and how hard it is to have an iron recall on a dog despite all the distractions. It's usually a question of leaving and starting from scratch in a quiet place, then offering one distraction at a time, from a greater distance, then a smaller distance etc. I'm sure you know the drill. You've been to trainers.
But hey, ya gotta get that energy out somewhere. I wish Jones Beach by us would designate a portion as a dog beach. Goodness knows they have the space.
I have a ~1 yo male vizsla and his play style is crazy. Too crazy for even younger vizslas than him, and certainly for most older dogs. He’s always gotten along with ridgebacks and some days I think about getting one to keep him company.
Our latest rescue is a ridgeback/plot hound mix altered male named Duke. Your videos nail his behavior and methods needed to get through to him. We still can't do off leash though. His prey drive is ridiculous.
My first ever Dog was a Rhodesian Ridgeback when i was 7 and he was great ^^ He was definitely a rough tumbler type but then all Dogs are and honestly you wouldn't think he came from a bloodline of Lion hunters because he was somewhat gentle to an extent with me despite being rough mind you he was a Puppy but still he seemed best behaved when out on walks at the beach etc. Ill always remember him and i have a soft spot of Ridgebacks now

Was very close to getting a ridgeback but due to the fact we had low fences in a large garden I went with a Cane Corso. But one day I would love a ridgeback but not sure about having 2 difficult breeds!

NO they are not! They are AMAXING dogs after year 2, but the first 2 years are worse than having a toddler. They are very demanding, very strong, and very strong willed! They are not people pleasers like a lab. That being said they are my favorite breed of dog bc they turn into couch potatoes after 2 years and become the most amazing dogs ever.
I’ve had Ridgies all my life, from the day I was born 63 yrs ago and I adore them. Your videos are beautiful and I thank you for them. I’ve always had bitches, but 2 and a half yrs ago we got a male so our gorgeous girl Zuri would have a playmate. When he was 6 moths and she was 3, we had her spayed as she was having awful phantom pregnancies. She was so healthy and gentle but died on the operating table . Since then our boy Kamau has been a real challenge, hopefully I’ll get there.

List of being the BOSS the RR then everyone else !
Growing up we had Ridgebacks. They are wonderful dogs but our male was very challenging. At 105 lbs he was very dominant and always getting into scrapes with other dogs, even jumping over the fence to spend 2 hours fighting 5 German Shepherds next door. Amazingly he survived the experience and gave a good account of himself, but never did it again. They are fantastic protectors though, and saved my Mum from an intruder, standing between him and her and driving him out of the house, so we were always grateful to him. Dominant behaviour though is a problem with many large intact males. More recently had a large Labrador who was generally passive, but would react assertively with any dog approaching his own size, and would go crazy for some reason with Burmese type Mountain dogs. He would then get picked on himself by smaller dogs who felt threatened by him. It is a difficult issue, and there will probably always be incidents with large unneutered male dogs.
It's important to be aware of the moments when we project our own issues onto dogs. Especially males and dominance. If dogs aren't able to recall in dangerous situations, then they should be leashed.
As a dog trainer of over 18 years I've tackled advanced & the worst behavioral issues you can think of (& I'm sure there's more) as a RR owner of a true alpha male like yours (which are actually rare, the term alpha gets thrown way way too loosely nowadays) a good tip to control Zero's behavior is to find work for him to do. If you analyze what gets him in trouble, it is his nose. Use his nose for "nose/scent work" i bet that if u get him into search & rescue or even teach him an advanced "find it" game you can redirect to his behavior & watch Zero ignore other dogs & environment during work mode. Also teaching him a strong "leave it" command helps too. Zero needs to be challenged mentally or else he WILL decide whatever course of action good or bad. Just my 2 cents 👍 wish you the best
Jobs are great but ultimately it will depend on what Zero values more; the action at the park vs the nosework game. Perhaps training by the park with the use of the Premack principle would work?

I had a "Penny" lol named Taïga. Mother of 23 in her lifetime and her companion, Kyff (father of those 23). Then we kept a male puppy, Greg... and NO ONE messed with them. Taïga was alpha all the way into the bones, Kyff was my calmness and Greg a goof ball. I miss the long walks with them in the back country near my old house. Hopefully, I'll get another Rodhesian Ridgeback (or 2 🙂) when my kids all leave the nest. Cheers from Portugal

We got lucky with our current RR. He's a dream boy, we even sucsesfully bite trained him. (an amazing thing if you have an exceptional mouthy RR) although be prepared with RR bite training to abandon early if thebitetraining doesn't take easily!

I have noted that female RR are more energetic in general than the males.

My now 7 year old mix Rhodesian \ sharpei is now a big ol lazy girl. When she was a puppy her energy was nuts. Up and down, just Wreaking havoc in our home lol. Now she is a big ol couch potatoe! She still gets crazy little spurts of energy, but for the most part she has settled down Tremendously

i had serious trouble with my large ridgback male from about 9 months of age to 2,5 years. But i learned to read his body language better and better and got him neutered aswell & we are able to stay out of trouble 99% of the time. He´s still a large and fairly dominant male, but he learned a lot aswell and got much more reliable.
Also, i experienced that a lot of dogs misjudge the ridge as put up hair and are extra suspicious when meeting my dog, have you been able to observe similar encounters?
Ridgebacks can themselves be a "trigger" dog for other pups. Whether it's their posture or their ridge or something else, I can't say for certain.

Hey pal, do you have and idea how much weight both of them had at the time that vid was made? Just curious, our Ridgi Zoe is 4 month right now and has 21 kg.
i used to let my pup go to doggy daycare but stopped for awhile when i saw how rough his play was getting. Some time later i decide to let him go back and he comes home with bite marks and a open wound. I wasnt even mad because i knew i was taking a chance. Maybe ill get him into agility and lure chasing

Very interested to know how long you are going to keep Zero intact? I have just started to have issues with my most lovable intact 14 month old male Ridge at local parks where there are a ton of off-leash dogs. From day one, there have been occasional issues with dominance (99% of other dogs against mine), but the newest negative development is the entitled hypocritical (live in LA) dog owners who are acting like gestapo out of fear of my gentle giant. But in truth, my guy plays extremely well and cautiously with the tiniest dog. So my big quandary is how to consider the future - since I don't have a second dog for play like you do, I need to get mine socialization/packtime, and yet obviously tiring of the newly found clicks of reactionary turkeys, and know the next stages of my dogs more intense hormonal interactions (attempted intercourse) are just ahead. How long do you suggest I should suffer the possible jail time or grandfatherhood...?
I have a 10 month old male RR, is it normal for a RR to actually lift his leg and pee on another dog? he only did it once at the doggy park to a Dobermann cross who was being a slightly aggressive towards my dog??
I have only had one and he was not an alpha dog. More of a wimp but he still looked like a real tough guy so he would surely prevent any possible attack from a would be bad guy.
Even if he was a wimp he was still verry stubborn. Especially in he's first year.
Once mature and properly trained he was a real pleassure to have around.
And of course he was an absolute sweet hart.
He was no problem to handle off leash.
Also with other dogs around.
To my delight he had abolutely no interest in wild animals so I could always have him off leash in the woods.
In town I keeot him on the leash.
Not because there was any problem to handle him there but because many people are nervous around a dog like the ridgeback.
You mentioned play style as beeing rough for ridgebacks.
My first dog was a Golden Retriver.
A lovely boy.
But growing up he's vbest mates were 2 New foundlands and 1 St Bernardh.
He was of course constantrly run over.
As a consequence he considered that normal and played a lot rougher with other dogs than did my Ridgeback.

My Ridgeback cross (Tonka) is just like Penny! 😍 He's challenging. He's horrible on recall though. He's his own dog forsure. Tonkas personally is like zero when it comes to dog on dog interaction

What is it with Spitz breeds and ridgies? My ridgies are not great with GSD or Swiss Shepards at all and I know quite a few ridgies who are the same. I feel like they run on different frequencies.
And GSDs and Spitz breeds also run on different frequencies. GSDs aren't spitz.
A lot of dogs don't care for Spitz/Northern climate dogs. They are said to be a more primordial group; older. More...true DOG. Hard to explain I guess. I just know there's a pair of Huskies by my park owned by an older Asian gentleman who could not care less if they run five miles ahead of him and stand tall over other dogs, challenging them and sizing them up. I dread seeing those two coming.
Hello, I have been checking out your videos for quite some time. I'm about 2 get to female Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies that are also siblings. Just any information that you have on raising two sibling female puppies will be greatly appreciated. And also I'm not exactly sure from you and your videos but have you raised two females together? I also plan on keeping my females intact for at least 18 months
I strongly advise you research and prepare for a phenomenon called "Littermate Syndrome." It's an important challenge to understand ahead of time when bringing home two dogs from the same litter. You'll want to recognize the signs ahead of time and work to eliminate any issues before they happen.
I have a mostly gsd mix who has annoyed every dog Ive fostered with exuberant energy and overly clingy affection.
I took in a mutt puppy a few years ago and she has matched him. She wears him out with some of the roughest play I've ever seen dragging him across my yard to the point of breaking collars and she is an avid hunter like nothing I've seen.
I just found out she is one of these ~ to a t. At least I had my gsd to help train her, i didn't really find her to be a challenge except on dog toys & destroying dog beds so he must have helped when I was busy.
Are there benefits to have an intact male other than breeding?
Intact male doesn't make a difference in my experience
