I was 7 or 8 years old when my babysitter had this song on repeat on her record player in 1985 or 1986. Her relationship with her man had just ended. I remember her crying, placing the needle back into the grooves of the record after the song ended to start it over again, feeling terrible for her and the beauty of the song. Every time I hear it, I go back to Kankakee, IL in my mind and seeing my babysitter devastated over love ending. But I am also thankful for being introduced to such a beautiful song.

And has been a prodigy since he was 11 years old. This was the end of his period as one of the biggest commercial artists in the world, but his discography is better than anyone's. And this is one of the 3-4 most beautiful love songs ever written. Just throwing that in.

Of course I was at the time feeling like shit, but then this song came around and I felt a mix of sad relief and hope, because it first reminded me of my 10 years old long addiction and the way I miss out on feeling greater pleasure from music, but also the way there are great things out there to enjoy other than what I'm struggling with. It wasn't until I've grown and experienced heartbreak that I'd listen to these words that sunk so deeply into my soul. This song makes me happy and sad at the same time! To me it's a song of HOPE. Until recently I had not noticed the rather sad turn-around to the first verse. The words are something like "the love that I sought could never be mine" and the chords seem to wander off downward into that all-to-familiar romantic worrying. This is, of course, remedied by the next triumphant chorus "And though you don't believe that they do", which once again sends our hearts and hopes skyward! Bravo!

For my money, the G.O.A.T. I love Prince, but Stevie did everything he did and was more critically acclaimed (only artist to win three consecutive Grammy Album of the Year awards in back to back to back releases). And has been a prodigy since he was 11 years old. This was the end of his period as one of the biggest commercial artists in the world, but his discography is better than anyone's. And this is one of the 3-4 most beautiful love songs ever written. Just throwing that in.

I heard this song some days ago, after failing my struggle with my longtime addiction and giving in to my desire.
Of course I was at the time feeling like shit, but then this song came around and I felt a mix of sad relief and hope, because it first reminded me of my 10 years old long addiction and the way I miss out on feeling greater pleasure from music, but also the way there are great things out there to enjoy other than what I'm struggling with. So this song right here gives me one more reason to leave behind my misery habit, it is something I look forward to enjoy fully someday, I know how beautiful it is :')

As a child I'd hear this song and feel the melody of it...not really listening to the words. I knew that I liked the song. It wasn't until I've grown and experienced heartbreak that I'd listen to these words that sunk so deeply into my soul. This song makes me happy and sad at the same time! To me it's a song of HOPE. Man it hurts when love isn't reciprocated and one day we won't have to feel the pain of that anymore. I'm glad Stevie made this song because feeling "Overjoyed" at least taught me that it's great to love....just make sure you invest in someone who's going to love you back.

I love this song!! I don’t believe that it’s sad; I think that it’s about someone waiting for someone else to realize that they love them. (And that’s surprising from me who is sometimes too negative, LOL). Notice how Stevie Wonder ended this with the strumming of a harp, not a sad violin. This is a gorgeous song! It's one of those songs that stay in your head for weeks and you wonder why you ever bothered listening to anything else. Until recently I had not noticed the rather sad turn-around to the first verse. The words are something like "the love that I sought could never be mine" and the chords seem to wander off downward into that all-to-familiar romantic worrying.
This is, of course, remedied by the next triumphant chorus "And though you don't believe that they do", which once again sends our hearts and hopes skyward! Bravo!
