    3:56 yeah getting your payment is a miracle in this case but what's the sick point is you had to search for your own earned money. In the contract, everything should be clear. They should have paid to your bank account automatically.

    The best advice i’ve ever got was get a day job that can sustain your hobby (and doesn’t make you miserable) until your hobby can be your job.
    I love gigging and playing out, but i’m also not unrealistic and understand that I have to have a real job to help support myself. I wish more people understood that there is no shame in having a normal job AND doing music.

      If you’r income is entirely dependent on your creative output, that can often create stress and conflict that ultimately negatively impacts the creative output.

    Great video. Labels are the worst; though independent distributors can have their own set of problems, it's a small price to pay for owning your masters. Regardless, gathering an audience is harder than ever in a streaming era with millions of choices, few key players at the top, general hostility toward newer artists, and (most, not all) people's tastes remaining static for long periods of time if not indefinitely. Only artists that truly love & dedicate themselves to their craft will be able to find success in such conditions.

      Looks like streaming has hurt a lot in the grand scheme Especially with the recent reports of Disney + losses.
      In reflection, at the start of the napster era we were broke college students and high schoolers annoyed with region locks and limited distribution in the advent of digital media.
      But this new norm that Netflix and Spotify brought on has truly exposed the vulnerabilty of the entertainment industry, indie and commerical.
      Now the dawn of generative AI is looking to drive a stake in.

    music is my greatest hobby. it will never be more. with a growing family i have not enough time to push anything forward. its lovely to have some releases on small "collectives" as i call them (free soundcloud releases) or release something yourself.

    Agree with every word. On my side, I used to make a living of a music for a couple of years in my life, but the main source of money was just working on a studio making music for someone else, like for cinema companies or like rap/pop artists. I did try to push for my own projects to cash something but it never felt to be worth of my time, cause the income is just drastically lower than a simple rap beat which I can write in 40 minutes and earn right away the amount of money it could bring through audiojungle in a month or in a year by wide label distribution. Nowadays I ended up on a good career in "regular" job with near 4k USD income monthly and I threw out of the window all the crunches connected to making somewhat even close to that by making music. I'm just making D'n'B as a relief hobby now and got myself involved in some content creation along the way, not because of money but to receive satisfaction. For me personally now is much more important that someone will listen to my music and it will make their day better. Even 1 single listener is already worth it in my eyes. I still work with a few labels but just to get rid of the job that I'm not interested in doing myself - such as uploading stuff to spotify, youtube music etc.
    It might be not right to the industry, but I don't really care now if the label is not going to pay me anything, best case scenario my share would be like 300-400 bucks or so, nah that's 2 days worth of my worktime on a job. But I understand, that for many people it is not the case and 400 bucks a month might be a lifechanger, so music industry does have a number of issues. And those issues are kicking harder on less known artists which is really bad, this has to be adressed somehow and fixed, cause many really cool musicians that I knew did quit industry due to financial disappointment.

    I'm semi oriented in DNB cos ppl liked my heavier stuff more, so I'm moving there slowly, but let me give you an example :D
    Through my distributor since I got it few years ago I got 200+$ (i had a break and did not release much music), its the same amount I got THIS MONTH by just selling one beat and doing few online courses. Solo path is better, but it requires a loooooooot of 'idgaf about numbers it will grow in time' mentality :D
    The only thing that my two out of few releases on labels ever got me was the placement in a TV series, but imma see how those royalties will pay up cos I have .... 100% :D

      Yeah but for some reason for TV placements they count 100% for 200% mate :D So you technically get 50% anyways. Double-check if that is the case!

      @@ModestIntentions I mean, you might be right, but when I registered it in Polish copyright agency as I was instructed, I've asked the label what my % should be, they stated to put 100% everywhere. Maybe there is certain level of it I'm not aware of where they will get a cut or something that you refer to. Anyway thanks for the video cos it is very informative!

      @@BOKKENMMB I know a guy who writes orchestras for Hollywood/ESPN etc etc etc etc. The guy told me that in this business the royalties calculate as 200% and when they tell you you get 100%, this still means they get their 100%. To me this sounded like scam and very, very dumb. But yeah just giving you a friendly tip that things like this happen as well. Let me know if you find out something unexpectedly. lol.     Most people don't buy music, only people who listen to music as a hobby, and how many of those people like your genre. There's no money there to get. The advantage of being on the label is getting better bookings. It's bleak, but this is how I see it. I have a friend who is only a moderately famous psytrance producer and he makes a living from gigs, so I know it is possible. I don't know anyone that makes significant money from track sales though.
    It would be nice if people stopped viewing music as sonic wallpaper, but it's a long road back to the days of normal people collecting music on physical medium. One thing I think artists should do is have a more big picture view of their releases with art and presentation. A lot of electronic music labels have very disposable art, or like no description of the release, and it makes it seem like it's just an assembly line with no spirit or humanity. You need to take the listeners on a journey and give them some meta experience to tie the whole release together, so they don't just remember the individual tracks but the release as a whole. I think we've kind of lost the idea of an album as a larger concept and that's one of the reasons people don't feel as personally attached to the music.

    The problem is the greed of whom ever is selling your music, they are leaching on. Artists. They should be comptent to take at best 5% of profit

    It's really difficult to choose if you want to create content or art, I myself am not expecting to be able to life of my music, unless i am insanely lucky it will probably stay a hobby - but I think thats fine, alsong as I can do my art my way and have it actually be art and not just another "banger"

      that's why I don't subscribe to those ones.
      I'm a true utopist. To me music is about art, feeling, communication, self care even...but money effe up everything and everyone it touches (imo of course)

      @@ModestIntentions Yes thats exactly it (content creator VS Artists. but it doesn't mean that some CC can't be Artists also or A be CC)
      It's like anything else actually. Each of us have our own opinions and "put our own limits" (of whatvwe accept or not) based on our principles, or experience etc, and obviously it can evolve.
      It doesn't mean I don't support Artists who find their way on those labels. But I support them through their own channels and pages etc

    My heart sank to the floor, when u said u got only 5000 for 1 million plays. Considering how much work it takes, --- spread that over a year of living expenses, --- this is an absolute scam.
    For me personally, I just can't see the money in DNB music production, considering like you mentioned, you also have to become a slave to the system (making popular entrylevel stuff). If I wanted to go that route, I'd follow my main job that I had been doing prior, where I would earn 10x any normal musicians streaming wages. But again, that would mean slaving away, doing stuff I don't have a passion for. It is what it is, the market demands and one has to either step up or go home. I understand that tho. The chances of one making music that is unique and ends up being popular is CLOSE to absolute zero, but not quite :-) so who knows. Better die trying I guess.
    ALSO, Martin I think this type of video is absolutely amazing from you. Really like your scripted stuff already. Its very thought out and an amazing insight I havent had yet in terms of DNB.
    Looking forward to that course. I owe that one to you. Your "no bs" approach to drums has had such a big impact on my production.

    I purely write for fun. Im a psytrance producer. If i get booked for a festival one day, im happy. Id play for free. Im not going to stress myself out with making money. Im poor, and its fine with me. Yes i will be spending alot on my studio, with no return.... But its my hobby.

      Sadly, everyone gets older. Once they all go, who is there to take place? I'm not sure any of those talented youngsters are going to be fully invested in drum and bass with all other opportunities out there. We'll see what the future holds for us.
