Fun fact, the floating island head from the fifth Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained, when playing it's speech backwards, it's actually saying something along the lines of: "You've disturbed my slumber. Enter my mouth, human. Enter your destiny."
Maybe by entering it's mouth, they would've achieved enlightenment. Or maybe they would've died brutally by having their bodies grinded into red paste.
The Hidebehind is actually a real American folklore. It's an explanation for people who walk in the woods and always feel like they are being watched. I read one of the ways to repel it is alcohol; which makes me wonder if people back in the day were just making an excuse to go to the woods and get drunk.
I'm assuming it existed because your brain was likely picking up on subtle clues that something *is* actually watching you (likely local fauna) but not translating it to your conscious mind. Think being able to hear your name being said out loud in a room filled with people having conversations. Your brain is picking up all the conversations, but only on the unconscious level and allowing you to function in whatever actual conversation you're currently having, until something that it's keyed as important happens and it alerts you. In this way, alcohol would likely be a way to ward it off simply due to how it interacts with brain chemistry.
When i was a kid, i would watch the road when we drive around and always imagine a presence zooming alongside our car but always hiding behind signs and fences
I respect the hell out of Alex Hersch for the having the balls to even suggest that twist (from "Lefty"), let alone get the OK to actually air it on TV
If you decypher the cryptograms at the end of each of these shorts and put them together in a certain order you get a message: "I was so blind. He lied to me. The darkness is near."
I had a friend in Boy Scouts who would tease me about the Hide Behind in our camp area. Would make noises saying it was here. I thought he was kidding until I found this is actual folklore.
Regarding the end of the world, we did see Dipper and Mabel go 1000 years into the future in the time travel episode. Time baby was destroying the world at that point SPOILERS FOR SERIES FINALE BELOW And in the s2 finale time baby is killed by Bill and there's a code that said "it will take 1000 years for time baby's molecules to reassemble and when they do he's going to be very cranky"
@@--CHARLIE-- well.. Based off that one could say he could be the same head from the season 2 finale that tries to eat dipper (he also tries to convince dipper. By getting In his mouth)
I know people get on Mabel for ruining things like the mailbox, but the whole point is that they needed a reason for Dipper to be unable to ask the mailbox who the author is. It’s like Soos messing up stuff in the Dino episode, you have to have things go wrong for there to be conflict.
@@FranciscoRamirez-nb4uu to be fair, the answer of who wrote the journals would be a straight forward answer "Stanford Pines" with the kids not knowing the real Stanford is in another dimension (s) and believing their grunkle is the author. It would be an interesting turn of events honestly.
I think the issue is looking at it from a Doylist and Watsonian perspective From a Doylist perspective they need a reason Dipper can’t just ask and get the answer and Mabel is a good excuse From a Watsonian perspective it’s just Mabel doing something selfish and destructive again which can be frustrating especially when compared with Dipper
These short clips reminded me of Over The Garden Wall. If someone hasn't watched it yet, I really recommend it, it has a similar art style to Gravity Falls too.
You guys would LOVE this show called “Inside Job” also produced by Alex Hirsch (the producer of Gravity Falls). It has a very fun and engaging plot and the tone shifts perfectly between really lighthearted/funny and serious at just the right spots. Maybe you can react to it after you finish up Gravity Falls!
The Mickey Mouse shorts y’all were talking about are so funny! The animation needs some time to get used to but the jokes are hilarious. Especially the new ones on Disney+ as well
There's something funny to me about the parents that are pissed off about shows like Daredevil and The Punisher being added to Disney+ that have no idea of a two minute short from a children's show that ends in a mass suicide.
I can't tell if he is really rowing backwards, it might just be a visual trick that to us it looks backward, but I don't think he is. If he is rowing backwards though, it could be a hint for the viewer to play the island's voice backwards to hear what he is really saying, I don't want to spoil it for you if you haven't heard it backwards before. It's simple but adds another level lol
I remember going to my first american summer camp around the time the hide behind episode aired, and being incredibly scared when I heard that it was based on an actual american folklore, I when home earlier then anyone else because of it and that’s saying a lot where is live we have a folklore(mito) about “la llorona” which is basically a mother whose lost her children and during the night of you are still awake it takes you with her

Cool that they’re checking out shorts. There are also some Rebels shorts from the season 1 days, might be fun, seeing as Eric and Aaron might not have seen those either
In the commentary track for Last Mabelcorn, Alex reveals that at one point they would've done a short called "Dipper's Guide to Why My Fly is Always Down" where Dipper believes that his fly being down is the byproduct of supernatural forces.

It's surprisingly disturbing

I think it was more of "Enter my mouth, children", which is more disturbing
Oh it’s so messed up and terrifying I love it. It’s like “Enter my mouth children, enter your destiny!”
@@SpicyClover Same thing
"Lefty" has to be my favorite for how it just goes from 0 to 100 real fast
Yes. That scene is forever burned in my memory.
Lefty belongs in Rick and Morty
This is literally my favourite episode so far, and it's not even a full episode!
I think my favorite is the hide behind one because i like the hide behind
My favorite is the island one for creepiness

I read one of the ways to repel it is alcohol; which makes me wonder if people back in the day were just making an excuse to go to the woods and get drunk.
Considering how constantly drunk Americans were literally all the time, I doubt they needed an excuse

you know how stan said “these are literally the stupidest people on earth,” well he’s not kidding. this actually is important!

season two episode 7. the episode that the endcards in the Dipper Guide to the Unexplained allude to. think of the old man mcgucket

Made sadder by "a Tale of Two Stans".
The Gravity Falls Lake Floating Head is one of the scariest things I've ever seen in animation
I wish there was more to that actually, I rlly liked it.
When you watch that scene in Spanish it says: "A new era begins, 6-1-8, the new era, 6-1-8"
On another note the “hide behind” is an actual creature from North American folklore.
You can really see the influence Gravity Falls had on Rick & Morty in these shorts. Especially the "left facing" guy one.
cant wait for the second season reaction
9:11 this is actually a real myth among lumberjacks
This show takes place during a summer vacation but these shorts kinda feel like a summer vacation from everything else

Damn, that left-hand guy got DARK
That was so fun! I didn't think y'all would think these were creepy. But the music at the end of the Hide-Behind does creep me out a bit. 😄

"NOPE! Bear-O's creepy! Everyone hates Bear-O!"
Ya know, Stan really wasn’t lying to dipper about not having a Tattoo…

Gravity falls wasn't always on disney XD around the beginning of the second season they hopped channels from the main Disney Channel to Disney XD
It was honestly very inconvenient if you were like me and didn't have access to the Disney XD channel wanting to watch the episodes as they aired
