I think Jake fundamentally doesn’t understand how skeptical people are (and HAVE to be) when you randomly ask them for money. It should be maybe put into tiers and then the people from the tier of the highest need WHERE $500 WOULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE (like if someone has 500k in medical bills and a "charity" gave me $500 of course I'd have to be grateful but inside I'd be like wow...thanks...this solves nothing.) and randomly select someone from that group

I do get a large amount of funding on tiktok but we are most successful when we’re within our existing real life communities. Charity is becoming a less favorable thing amongst those who need it because mutual aid organizations are doing fantastic work, with way less money needed to run orgs etc. idk I’m a way smaller creator than jake I’ve had to really learn how to stretch a dollar for the mutual aid organization because people don’t always donate.

I am in no way implying those 30 people deserved to go without help or that it wasn’t a helpful resource for them, but the goal should always be to service as many individuals as possible and if you’re not seeing your numbers growing, you have to rethink your model for service. I’m glad you were so empathetic throughout. I’ve never subscribed to Jake but the internet hate, especially from manosphere dudes, can be intense. There are so many weird gross choices that Jake made, and I support everyone discussing and unsubscribing, but it’s important to remember they’re not even close to the worst things other creators and/or celebs have done. The standard for commentary youtuber mistakes is pretty low because they make a career out of publicly judging others, and Jake especially sowed those seeds by being so hyper-critical and parasocial in the past. That being said, I’d rather we stop paying attention to this guy altogether than accuse him of faking chronic illness or call him a soy boy.

definitely, the people saying he's faking his illness is really gross. just because someone did something you don't like doesn't mean that they've done all the other bad things in the world, or that they can't have bad things happen to them and it not be their fault. it's like some people are unable to conceptualize that someone can do something wrong and it doesn't automatically make them the worst of everything.

Hear me out...I think the concept of never stop is actually amazing lmao. Too many people with disabilities have to fight for money from charities and government schemes that can only go directly towards specific medical equipment, disability aids, different transport needs, ect. Wheras Jake, a youtuber who managed to get lucky with getting a job that he can actually work for his needs, still seems to understand that most disabilities don't lead to monetary needs that are that straightforward. If you're trying to start your career it's hard to find first jobs or internships that allow you to be part time/will accommodate your needs when you haven't already proven you're a valuable asset so disabled people can end up out of work once they finish school for a lot longer. Disabled people often can't pick up extra hours to help make ends meet or get luxuries. A one-off lump sum of a substantial amount to one disabled person is actually a very necessary service that I think he'd relate to the need for with his symptoms of fatigue and variable mobility. I think he just doesn't have the words to effectively communicate a good mission statement and explain WHY this is such a good model. Also the video was shitty and this behaviour is shitty lol, love the charity idea tho!!!

It’s also hard to ‘prove’ a lot of that stuff on paper since charities usually need “we’ve helped X amount of people,” for funding purposes. (I.E. it’s harder to prove you’ve helped X amount of people rather than provided X amount of wheelchairs.)
I think a better way to go about this would be streams to help fill GoFundMes and mutual aid requests for mobility aids, transit, etc., to build up goodwill in the space before going into a non-profit, which has operating costs, a middle-man managing funds, etc.

This comment section is so interesting because I didn’t know so many people had the same experience with Jake that I did. After I stopped watching him I just avoided anything to do with him.
I watched him for a long time but he started to get really negative and mean-spirited and he would say these crazy out of pocket things (e.g. in his Shane Dawson livestreams his one sided beef with Ryland Adams-who I’m definitely no fan of-would come out and Jake’s outbursts were usually uncalled for in my opinion) and I used to think he was just joking but it was rarely ever funny so it just made me uncomfortable.
He would complain a lot and take things way too far and I could never tell what was genuine. He started to annoy me more than entertain me and I just didn’t have fun watching his videos anymore.
I do appreciate the way you handled this situation though. You were very compassionate while still being critical which I think is important in this case because I don’t think Jake is a bad person. I think he just struggles with intention versus execution.
Never Stop was created with good intentions and I believe that he would ask for donations with good intentions, but his execution or the way he went about it just made him and his non-profit look awful. I have to imagine people would feel kind of uncomfortable donating to him now.
I actually understand where Jake was coming from though. He is/was friends with a lot of well-known commentary UA-camrs (arguably some of the biggest commentary channels) so it would be pretty hurtful if none of those people ever asked about his non-profit when it’s clearly a huge part of his life.
However, this is where Jake’s tendency to take things too far comes in.
Yes, would be nice if your friends showed an interest in something that’s really personal and important to you. But they’re not obligated to support your cause just because they have the financial means to do so.
Charity work and donations are voluntary. Most people don’t donate to charities even if they do agree with their cause and there’s a multitude of reasons why.
He’s more than welcome to be upset or disappointed about it in private but I would never, ever talk about it publicly because there’s almost no way it’s going to go in your favor. No one wants to be guilted into giving. You just end up sounding desperate, entitled, and ungrateful.
Anyway, I hope Hannah is okay because she always seemed like a very sweet, empathetic person. I feel like Jake’s attitude and online drama would be stressful for her because it was stressful for me and I wasn’t even directly involved.

I feel like there is a lot of skepticism right now about charities (with people not being 100% sure of where their money is going) and people want to feel EXTREMELY confident about where they put their money. This is an excellent way to title this video. I used to watch this young man's videos a lot, a while ago I started to get burnt out by the overwhelming negativity and personality based hatreds that left tubers in general seem to be playing into way too much. I think a handful of them have managed to evolve past that and their content, but this creator has kind of bugged me for a while. There's something that struck me as dishonest about him for a long time and the hatred feels especially juvenile

Right, i feel like way too many commentary youtubers think that you need to be overwhelmingly negative or critical to make good social commentary. The reason youtubers like kurtis conner, danny gonzalez etc are so much more popular than youtubers like him is because they're light hearted, so it's easier to binge watch them and their videos are really rewatchable. Whereas negative youtubers like jake not only worsen your mood, but also tend to get involved in so many controversies that being a fan gets outright tiring.
If he focused on creating GENUINE connections with the community and adding positive energy to it, not negative, he would see the growth he clearly is desperate for.

~9:00 on schools being discriminatory. I went to a p good high school. And I so vividly remember that sophomore year, during the hearing tests, I failed it. This wasn't a surprise to me as I'd had multiple medical issues and surgeries on my right ear specifically, had accommodations that required me to sit closer to the teacher and away from aircon units, and couldn't hear well or put stuff in my right ear.
The nurse asked if I knew why I failed the test, let me go... called me back from a different class, said she couldn't find my accommodations for my hearing in my reccords (because we stacked them on my 504 plan), asked if my parents knew I had surgeries, and made me call my mom to demand my medical records.
It was completely demeaning and an overreach of her power. And the peers?? I won't go into it. But as u said, they were sometimes cruel.
Schools 100% do outrageous things to disabled students.
When I heard his story, I related because its just how the systems work. You're right, in critiquing Jake, we are focusing on the wrong thing.

i feel like it would be a good idea to make the charity into some sort of linktree for gofundme’s for the people who have applied for the fund, where everyone has some sort of chance to get even a small amount of money whenever someone visits. instead of one total person a month getting $500, or i guess on top of that. like the charity should serve as vessel for the people who need help to get that word out instead of trying to get people to donate without knowing who that money would end up going to. i feel like it improves the odds of someone donating if they resonate with a certain person’s situation and feel called to help them in particular

It sucks and Jake definitely has been discriminated upon for his lyme disease so my heart goes out to him for that, *but* he does come across as very entitled and almost like he feels superior because of the work he does which is not a good thing for someone who runs a charity to act like especially publicly.

I definitely believe he faced discrimination in school for his chronic illness. Kids are honestly cruel. I got pretty lucky that my disability wasn't as visible ( I have a pacemaker) so i didn't really get bullied but I still has its struggles regardless and being a kid with chronic illness definitely can make you feel very alone. That being said... he's certainly only human. It's really quite sad to watch him basically torpedo his career and his charity by acting basically like a child. I do believe he probably has some trauma from his chronic illness. But having a disability doesn't necessarily entitle you to peoples sympathies and their money. And honestly I've grown to not trust many of the UA-camr charities or products now due to the Completionest charity scam, the Mr Beast drama etc and I'm sure many people feel that way. I would rather donate to a larger reputable charity than one by a UA-camr. And no one should be obligated or blackmailed into donating into a charity that doesn't seen well established. I really appreciate your take and information provided tho as I had no idea he dealt with chronic illness and I definitely empathize. What I think he should do going forward is take a break from YT and actually go to therapy. Idk if he can come back from this but I do believe he needs to work on himself before trying to run something as stressful as a charity. He's still young (God I feel old at 28) and honestly it sounds like a case immaturity and stress and he just made a rash choice

  • @dannimays7325

I think a majority of society doesn't understand what it's like to go through chronic illness. Yeah, maybe Jake is emotionally underdeveloped - he was isolated before he had to drop out of school and spent most of his life in pain. One of the only reasons he was able to pull through was because of mutual aid and grants, which is exactly what he's trying to provide for others. I don't think he's asking for $500 straight, but it's strange that people that call him a colleague couldn't commit to donating $50/month for charity when they make videos about buying items for thousands of dollars for a dumb little video. I have issues with Jake's delivery but I never expected for him asking people with money to redistribute their wealth to garner so much negative attention.

This may just be me, but i dont think this is completely worthy canceling for, forever or whatever it may be, i just feel like he could've done a lot worse, he really just needs to focus on his mental health, so he can handle negative situations a lot easier, maybe even take a break from youtube for a while, even though i think this may be his main income. Overall i think he can definitely learn from his mistakes, and end up treating people better, because all he's currently doing is making his situation worse by victim blaming, when he doesnt let his emotions sit before speaking out. Overall i think both sides should put themselves in each other shoes.

I used to watch & enjoy Jake's videos when his channel first took off a few years ago, & as a blind person I really appreciated him speaking so frankly about issues of ableism. The funny thing is, UA-camrs love to donate to each other’s charities or charity streams. It looks good for the giver and the charity and bolsters a feeling of connection in the community (eg when Game Grumps donates 5k to JackSepticEye’s charity efforts, I’m excited! ‘My friends’ are friends and doing some good!)
And the reason The Completionist’s charity got so much money despite being scammy is because he has connections, was good at telling the narrative about his mom, and has built up a lot of goodwill by being on UA-cam long enough to make those connections.
My point is, it truly is either that Jake just hasn’t made the connections necessary for them to trust him, and/ or other creators have seen this sort of work go sideways before and are (obviously) hesitant about giving a random 20-something with a new platform a good amount of cash.
Edit: Also a lot of disabled ppl on SSI or other disability income services have a cut-off on savings/ funds/ etc., they’re allowed to have, so being given a lump sum of cash could actually get them cut off from services as opposed to just buying them a wheelchair.

i used to like him but the obsession with shane really made me go okay! i’m out. don’t get me wrong, calling shane out on things that actually matter is fine (i think it’s overkill atp, everyone knows and he’s already canceled so beating a dead horse is bleh to me) but it’s borderline concerning now as he has made multiple ANGRY comments and whatnot about wanting to literally cause physical harm to ryland MANY tímes which is so unnecessary. ryland is a questionable person but to let a STRANGER upset you THAT much to the point where you’re making multiple statements about wanting to HARM someone is…..😬 and ofc no one sees it as a problem bc he can just go OH WELL SHANE DID ‘XYZ’ BEFORE. His content used to be VERY entertaining and i loved watching but once it became a shane fan channel, it fell flat for me. this all just my personal opinions but he became hateful and one of those drama channels that REACHED for the stars and made shit that really doesn’t matter a problem, just for example; what i got from the video was that Shane and Ryland had said they didn’t want to show their babies online then it turned to were only gonna show them a little which from looking at their videos, they do that. you see the babies for like 2 seconds or their heads and jakey went off on this weird rant about how they’re liars and got VERY upset bc ryland made a post of the twins and announcing that they were born, the babies were like NEW and the hospital room background was showing and he once again went on a rant on how people could find this hospital and go there. whole time it was a sign that didn’t have a name or anything and his fans were in those comments wishing that those babies were kidnapped. i know this a lot about ryland and shane but that’s WHAT HE TALKS ABOUT A LOT and it rubbed me the wrong way bc his nonsense encouraged even more concerning nonsense. his fans think the obsession is cute and funny, it’s gross. so to see a man who is so concerned with canceling another man i’m not shocked he’s not the best person either. he got too high up on his little pedestal and thought he was better than people therefore it resulted in entitlement and feeling like he was owed other peoples money. i watched his video and he said he would reach out and someone unfollowed him and left it on read and then suddenly it was IF THEY DONT RESPOND i’ll be exposing names which is so GROSS. imagine thinking you’re obligated to have someone’s money for the sake of charity. he runs this himself and puts his own money and said it wasn’t going well so it just feels like he’s mad that no one wants to help HIS passion project which literally consists of sending people money on paypal. if you’re struggling financially then the last thought should be “hey ima invest what little money i have into something that relies on donations and other ppl giving me money”. he could’ve just found another charity that was reliable and promoted that one if he really wanted to help but based off his videos it seems like he wants to do this so he can go HEY LOOK IM A GOOD PERSON and everyone else isn’t bc they don’t give money out .

My favourite thing about his video is how he cites an 'incident' from last year as to why people don't like him when he MASSIVELY glosses over it. For context, this time last year, Jake made a video calling Ethan Klein (h3h3) out for faking his illnesses for donations from fans. Ethan was (and still is) in the process of getting a diagnoses and is chronically ill. Jake's reasoning for Ethan faking his illnesses are 1) ethan thought he had Lupus but Lupus affects 90% woman, 2) Ethan pronounced a medical term wrong, 3) Ethan had a running gag of asking ChatGPT for medical advice and they would constantly call out the misinfo ChatGPT would say. Jake's video was so gross and demeaning and he never apologised for it. He scrubbed the videos off the internet, and sent takedown requests to archivers.
So no, Jake, your video last year wasn't a 'misstep', it was a malicious attempt at a takedown and it backfired.

7:11 Jake’s story is similar to mine (minus the Lyme disease, I’m chronically ill) and I STILL don’t fully know why I’m having symptoms. Lack of a clear diagnosis doesn’t mean that someone is faking it, just that they’re still figuring it out. I used to enjoy watching his content because of how much his story resonated with me, but had to stop since it just started getting more negative and less entertaining.

My chronic illness was discovered when I was 17. I have a shortened life span and have spent a lot of my time in the hospital and traveling out of state for appointments. I got nerve damage, I developed an opiod addiction, I failed out of college because I'd get a's on all the work and provide doctors notes but would STILL be failed for being in the hosptial instead of class. (Yes the disability office said that was allowed) my life is totally fucked up because of this. But it's NOT my whole personality. Ive seen a few of his vids and it feel like he thinks it makes him better than everyone else. Im not even shocked this guy feels entitled to everyone else's money. He's always come off as very self absorbed to me. It's crazy I feel so awkward when I have to tell someone about my chronic illness but he loves showing it off like it makes him king

This is the very first video of yours I've seen. I just want to say thank you. I am a chronically ill disabled person myself and its really rare for people to be able to talk about situations like this with empathy and understanding. I super appreciate the empathy and mentioning of how trying to say Jake is not sick is not okay. Thank you. I think its wrong what hes doing, threatening creators because they're not donating. Its really weird lol

This dude always gave me huge nickisnotgreen vibes, this cute wholesome persona is an instant sus flag at this point. Defo not surprised to see him go down too. Even the pattern of vids starting with usual criticism and turning into bulling anyone he doesn't like is the same.

I understand that people can change, people have the ability to change but the guy went full circle and used his illness and nonprofit to try and attack other content creators. After all the H3H3 stuff I thought he'd learn from it and grow but then he went straight back into weaponizing his chronic illness with this latest issue. This is why people don't trust him.

4:05 I had a co-worker who had post treatment lime disease. I don’t know if Jake has it or not, but the person I knew was really sick all the time. At one point before I left the company, they had a port installed that was constantly giving them antibiotics. I’m not sure if it worked or not but I hope so. Chronic illness especially invisible illness really sucks. I used to watch Jake and I tend to believe him because of how he talks about his extended family thinking he was faking. Kids don’t fake long term illness, they just want to go play. I did stop watching him because he was so negative on everyone and it made me feel icky.

Jake hasn't been putting out content worth the views and engagement he's begged for. The spite in his videos have only increased at the expense of originality and insight. It's the same old "I hate this person!" or "I hate what this person did! repackaged and interpolated ad nauseam. With this charity fiasco blemishing his already declining UA-cam career, I think redemption is off the table. I don't know if you also have experience in the TV industry like Jake (he claimed to intern for SNL), but your videos are a lot more lively and have well disposed commentary. Thank you for being sensitive to Jake's past while also offering constructive criticism in a playful manner.

i really used to like jake and watch every single one of his videos , i even have one of the never stop shirts . but i’ve slowly grown to dislike his content and character over time , some of the stuff he says and how he reacts to criticism just doesn’t sit right with me . i’m kind of embarrassed to wear my never stop shirt in public now because if someone recognizes it or asks me where it’s from/what it means

My kneecap slid out of its socket and my school nurse told me to walk it off to lunch and id be fine. By the end of the Night I couldn't walk and I had to wear a knee brace for 6 months. I had the injury in gym class, in front of my teacher. Despite that, because I didn't have a note I had to complete gym, the mile, basketball, etc. I only passed gym because covid started

love this video and your approach to the subject! i hope he watched this and maybe learns to be a little more empathetic. obviously he's not heartless but i think he can be a little (sometimes a lot) too intense.
it seems like a lot of youtubers will say very extreme things and then go "but obviously i don't hate this person and please don't send hate to them" and kinda treat that as all the empathy you need. idk just an observation

I am so happy to finally see someone talking about this without just going into it with bad faith or (as I've seen several) being super ableist towards Jake. He is for sure pretty shitty in this situation, but none of it seems to be out of real malice. This is such an actually fair video I feel, and as a chronically ill person myself, it's nice to see someone being both empathetic and critical without just dismissing what Jake's gone through, and the stress he's clearly been under as of late. I really just think he may have bit off more than he could chew with Never Stop, and wasn't prepared for the struggles of running such an organization while also dealing with health issues- but I haven't seen many people be sympathetic of that so this is refreshing
(excuse my rambling, i am tired af atm lol, so i hope this makes sense)

I expected this to be a hate video from the title but this is genuinely a breath of fresh air! I adore the way this video focuses on CONSTRUCTIVE criticism over plain criticism.
I've casually watched Jake's videos for about... 2 years or so? I think?
Personally, I feel a lot of respect for Jake as a creator since he seems like a genuinely good person. Not perfect, obviously, but someone who tries to be a good person. Maybe to an almost obsessive degree?
I myself have multiple invisible disabilities and though I won't donate(for now at least), I feel a sense of respect toward him as well as anyone who chooses to donate.
Its wrong to shame others for choosing not to donate, but the frustration also understandable from the point of view of someone who struggles in this sense as well.
Jake's approach was 100% wrong and unwarranted. Yet I still respect him, its rare to see someone who cares this much these days.
But maybe I'm just an optimist in this sense, who knows? Not me ;p

So I work for a non-profit childcare organization and a large part of my job is doing fundraising for our non-profit. The most important thing I have learned from this work is how much it pays to be kind and polite, especially if a company says no to donating. I have approached companies several times throughout the year to donate and most will be very selective about what they donate to and how much. Also, when companies do take the time to donate, I always make sure to send them a thank you card and we shout them out on social media for their support. Also, when I am asking for donations it’s usually for an event we are hosting or for a very specific thing we want to do. When you are asking people/companies to donate to your charity you need to be very specific and provide some sort of breakdown as to what the money is for, how you plan on using it, and perks that come along with donations such as shout outs on social media or some free tickets to the event we are putting on. Now, this would be a little different on UA-cam but if Jake wants to raise money he could do a monthly donation stream and reach out to companies to sponsor the stream. He could also give perks to viewers of the stream. What he really needs to do, if he wants to keep going, is consult a legal team and possibly an accountant to help manage the business end of the non-profit. He also needs to be more conscious of the fact that as the person asking for donations that he is the face of the charity so anything he says or does can make or break whether people donate to him.

Thanks for not dismissing his health/accusing him of lying about his health. I'm a spoonie and that's primarily why I started watching his videos because he does talk about disability and that experience on his channel that no other commentary channels do. you're the first person I've seen to not call him a liar for his health, especially something that is medically gaslit as 'well theres no proof we can measure in a lab/doctors pull out of their ass so you obviously just want attention/drugs'
That being said it's horrible he accused H3H3 of lying for clout when he has a disorder that is completely gaslit by the wider world and I didn't even know it was a hit piece and having a history together before making that video, he hid the history with H3H3 because I did believe him when he said he was frustrated because I thought it was about the outpour of support for h3h3 when the wider disabled community is shit on by the same people supporting h3h3
But he's also ableist a lot himself? he does use 'r slur voice' to mock people in a lot in older and I'm not sure if he ever changed based on compassion for feedback

Ablism is ripe and loud. I stopped watching him long ago because I wasn't huge on his attitude towards topics but from the bottom of my heart, I hate people trying to pick apart people's experiences and traumas. People have done it to me as a former homeless kid that ended up trafficked. I convince myself people do this because they don't wanna believe what those around them are fully capable of and the cruelty they themselves are capable of, but no matter the reason why it is so scarring and unnecessarily cruel when the options of empathy and comradery are on the table. I completely believe his story. It's all shit I've seen before. Still not gonna support him but I will 100% stand against prejudice and continuing abusive cycles whenever I get the chance.
