There are two main reasons... Reason #1: nine times out of ten, a woman's kids will reside with her full time, and if the man marries her and they live under one roof he will have to directly contribute, financially, to three children that he did not bring into this world. He assumes the most risk/burden. Reason #2: her kids will live under his roof (as the head of household) but he will not be able to discipline them in the same manner that he would if they were his biological children. His hands will be tied in regards to giving them discipline. Being a stepfather is often (not always, but often) a thankless job. On the other hand, she won't have to deal with the same issues because his children will live full time with their mother(s). It's like comparing apples to oranges.
