  • Martin Stimming took time out from his techno and UA-cam duties to show off the tiny Instant Mastering Chain, a combination of an eq, a compressor and a drive stage.
It thickens and sweetens incoming signals, with British-style low and high-shelf EQ with dedicated bypass and VCA based bus compressor with feedback and feedforward detector paths giving different characters to the sound. It boasts a Lundahl (r) output transformer with drive and gain reduction knob, and sidechain send / return via 6,3mm stereo jacks. And it only weighs 990g.
Doctron - Stimming's Instant Mastering Chain available now.
    Price: 2,500 euros

I think you must see this as a compact SSL Fusion + Bus Comp. Quality compression, EQ and transformer saturation in one box. Small doesn't translate to cheap automatically.

@@aurexlive exactly. If they made it as a proper big 19” rack processor for studio use, the price would be considered quite normal for such a device.

this could be a really great option for travelling mix/mastering engineers, and the price is very very good for mastering outboard where cheap (for mastering) gear is easily double the price of this unit, and that's for just one processor while this is two for the price of one. So in other words this is a fraction the price you could expect even from the most affordable mastering gear. Very cool and intriguing

Is $3100 USD cheap for something like this? Could I get an analog heat instead? Especially used? I suppose this is for pro studios.

I've never worked with seriously elite (> USD $10,000) gear but have owned a system made of stuff squarely in the "high-end" range (UREI/Teletronix/API, etc...). One thing I can say for sure is that when you start working with better gear in a good listening environment, it becomes immediately apparent why it costs more -- and to me it becomes apparent that it's worth the extra money for a tool you hear every day. (The original Mackie 1202 EQ is still one of my favorites regardless, but I digress. And of course great art is made with cheap tools all the time.)
For the right person, I feel certain that this is very reasonably priced. And not that it matters: but this guy seems genuinely humble and cool, and excited about what he's doing with his life.

    I like how it's now a "saturator" : ))
…because this thing is impossible to get to sound loud without audible distortion.
the term "Mastering Chain" is a bit misleading…
Especially in a live situation, where it needs to be able to handle a wide spectrum of potentially varying levels.
And while playing live, you'd generally be busy playing live, so you would need another person to constantly monitor and re-adjust those drive/threshold dials...

That's a lot of money to be locked in to a coloured sound especially with the 'Trident' EQ. Rather EQ in the rig and buy an Elysia Xpressor lunchbox for around 750Euro's for compression or even a 'Really Nice Compressor' FMR for around 350Euro's Both are highly regarded in the pro mastering world. Even the Zahl stereo EQ only costs 1800Euro's and is considered one of the best in the industry. It's small, it's made to order so I guess that has some value but there is much better for a lot less out there.

For an automated opa amp with feedback circuit, based on open source circuit design. I mean 500 would have been ambitious, i dont see the hifi aspect, for a bit distotion and EQ ? Ok it has the mastering advertisment, that justifys for sure, all that gold and platinum in the litlle box.

people complain so much about price like that means anything...he’s comparing it to a lunch box which is super expensive and you might buy more modules for it which will kill youre wallet. I mean look at a dangerous music compressor...it’s like at least that much and it’s just a compressor but it’s worth the money. A pro studio and field mastering device hand made by a super small company is in itself a reason to be excited about.

@@ZenMountain Ok: there are many compressors or eqs etc in 19" format that cost around 2000 euros or more, this is nothing new, and most of the times they do 1 job. A TG12413 Zener Limiter costs more than 5000 euros, take a look of what's inside it, it's half empty and it's a design from the 60's. This device aims at combining a high quality compressor/eq/saturation circuit in that tiny format for travelling musicians, as far as I know there is nothing like this on the market. New products require time and work to be developed and work has to be paid, I'd never work for free so do most of the people. Plus, this product is made in Germany, not in China or in the Usa, and by 1 person, that also raises the cost because is not an automated construction. I don't need it and I'm not going to buy, this is not for me but it's a thing that has a purpose
