Gloria's Cataract Surgery Experience

We’re all still over the moon after the Lionesses’ victory against Germany in the #WEURO2022 and, as luck would have it, this week we ran into a patient who has a special connection to one of the players - Lucy Bronze's Gran, who was attending our Gateshead hospital for cataract surgery! Lucy did us proud as a defender and played in all of England's Euro matches, including the final. As well as being a European champion, she’s one of England’s most decorated players of all time, having been crowned Women’s Player of the Year by UEFA, FIFA and the PFA, and the BBC’s Women’s Footballer of the Year - twice!
We interviewed Lucy’s lovely Gran, Gloria, about her experience of having cataract surgery at SpaMedica - where she reassured everyone there was nothing to worry about and said she felt well looked-after throughout her treatment - but we couldn’t resist asking her how she felt when she saw Lucy lift that trophy too! Needless to say, Gloria - like the rest of the nation - is still bursting with pride!
Well done to Lucy and all the Lionesses for their fantastic performance, and for giving us the post-pandemic boost we all needed! It’s great to see women’s football and our incredibly talented players getting the recognition they deserve - and bringing it home for the first time since 1966!
It was an absolute honour to meet Gloria, and we suspect England’s victory will be the main talking point in our hospital waiting rooms for many weeks to come!
