This was an AWESOME scene. Showing the breadth and depth of knowledge she possessed was a master stroke of exposition made active - of putting context around her decisions and actions while proving her understanding of the assets she was charged with protecting.
The Vice-President of the United States doesn't have a board, the position is literally a paper figure role, in case the President dies! But it the explination was bad ass!
Give Allison Janney the Emmy, SAG, Golden Golden Globe already...she ate this role. Was soooo excited when I saw she was part of this season and as always she never disappoints.
This is how you write powerful women. They're in heels and evening wear. But... they're smart, forceful, opinionated, and both are committed to forestalling a nuclear confrontation. In the parlance of Washington: these are serious people. Love this scene.
What we HAVE in Hillary, Kamala, and a host of other high-ranking patriot women of the US. Compare that to the choices of Don the Con, so far - Tulsi Gabbard, Elise Stefanik, who's up next -Amber Rose?
@@janetkriegl6720 I did not believe that was Hillary Clinton at any point, but sometimes she could perform the role enough to almost convince. Not well, but with acting skills. Kamala Harris has never for a single second looked or sounded the least bit credible, let alone on this level, and it is insane to suggest otherwise. To be fair, I can't decide for sure but I'd admit Sarah Palin might have been a Kamala-equivalent based on her sundry remarks. Tulsi Gabbard might not be ready for the role she's been given and that's an issue, but she's never sounded less than 20 times more plausible than the ridiculous Harris.
Nice of Alan Sorkin to ghost-write this scene for Neflix!!! Janny is a tour-de-force in roles like this. Can't wait to see her as President in season 3!
This second season felt so short, I did miss the two episodes they chose not to film originally, and they were too late to include. This scene was a masterclass on realpolitk.
What a well written scene. Just awesome. The way she drags in the map, throws up a bunch of state secrets, and then just leaves it there like a dirty napkin, is so badass .
I remember when in school for a writing assignment I beat it by having two female characters talk about cats defecating for a paragraph. At one point I had one of them break the fourth wall and ask for clarification if the cats were male or not because it was important to passing the test. The bechdel test is a pointless obstacle to creativity.
@ what if I want to tell a story about two gay men reminiscing about their deceased fathers, both of whom raised them as single dads? Under Bechdel’s test, my story would be considered as non progressive. It’s ironically a form of sexism masquerading as feminist.
Bringing up the Bechdel Test in a scene that didn't even make anyone else think about the Bechdel Test is a failure of the Bechdel Test. Congratulations.
OK hell....Hadn't really heard about this show but saw Alison Janney and thought I'd give it a go. But damn... I think I have to watch the whole show now.
I was confused when she said Cregan housed the UK's nuclear submarines, as I was sure it was Faslane. Turns out Cregan is made up and I was right. For a second I thought I'd gone crazy.
While serving in the US Navy my ship was supposed to have a port visit at Faslane. We had planned to go to St Andrews, but unfortunately the port visit was canceled.
I like the vibe of the scene. Even though what she says makes no sense. Nuclear subs aren't defensive, they are strategic and offensive. You don't stop vanguard-class subs with other vanguard-class subs. And you don't detect vessels with nuclear sub bases. Their purpose is to be undetectable, far away from anything that could detect them, and then to rain dozens of warheads on the bad guys from almost anywhere on the globe. They also (famously) don't have practical range limitations. So... it's all pretty silly.
Never heard of the show. Love the two actresses. This pops up on youtube. Ok I'll have a look. Wow. Ok... time to add this into my viewing schedule. btw as a Scot, the comments around the (fictitious though based on actual Faslane) Scottish base are accurate without polemic. Impressed.
As a Scot who supports Independence, this is very accurate. The amount of money and fear mongering the UK government put into play for the 2014 referendum was insane. So then you would think that because Scotland has a massive target on it maybe make the UK government think twice about its attitude to Scotland and its role in Nato, but nope they still don't really care about us. They just want our land and resources to play Risk with their buddies.
The reason Scotland voted to remain in the UK was the same reason they voted to remain in the EU; because it would be stupid and reckless, as was demonstrated by this scene (while fictitious, still resembles reality) and Brexit. I’m English, and voted to Leave the EU as I (like many others) were naive in believing the promises of our politicians. What has changed for the better since we left? In fact, the issues the Leave campaign said would be solved by independence have only worsened. Since 2014, the SNP’s unravelling has taught us that Scottish independence would have been grossly mishandled in the same ways.
@lordwhitesk1n996 hey fellow British islander 👋 I get your point about the SNP. They have been a shitshow recently, but a lot of people down south get mixed up with the SNP and Independence as the same thing, the SNP tanked at the election but Independence is still polling around 50% and with demographic change that number will only increase, it was in the 30s before the referendum and 45% on the actual result. I do believe it will happen, but not for at least another decade or more because the Unionist politicians are just full of shit. Scottish Labour are already in the minus with recent polling locally up here. Because the unionists' parties have to listen to what their bosses in London tell them while the SNP and the Greens don't have that problem, they are purely scottish parties. Brexit did show that a divorce can be messy, but the narrative against the EU was that they were the enemy and they were this big boogie man out to get us with rules and regulations and immigration etc, with scottish Independence it's different because we share the same island we would be former country men, many of them from England who have decided to live here. I think the attitude will be completely different and more amicable.
@@MartinFinnigan definitely more amicable, but the logistics are mad. Financially speaking, no one has ever been able to prove that Scotland would be better off. Due to Scotland having many similarities to Scandinavian nations, it’d also have to transform radically. That’d mean high taxes and lots of public spending, which may work, but it’d mean decades of austerity and economic instability while the country transforms itself, not to mention the incredible personal cost to many people who work and live in both Scotland and the rest of the UK. Additionally, many businesses based in Scotland would have to move to other British nations, as staying in Scotland wouldn’t make sense for the above reasons. I completely understand the want to abandon Westminster, but I think it’s important for Scots to remember that everyone else hates Westminster just as much as they do haha
@lordwhitesk1n996 Oh yeah, 100%, it's not going to be easy. I don't think any indy supporters that I know think it's going to be easy either, but I think it's 100% worth it to build a nation that truly represents the people of that nation and how they want to govern themselves, instead of relying on budgets and decisions made by London, and every election cycle praying the english electorate don't elect the tories (again) or even worse Reform and their mob. Also Unionist politicians always have paradox statements when it comes to Scotland, like we are too, small, too poor etc the most recent one is they say that Scotland produces the most energy in Western Europe, economists then say that Scotland produces so much energy to provide all energy needs for its population for almost no cost and could then sell excess energy for billions to the UK and countries, so why then are we paying the highest energy prices in Western Europe. Because the UK government. There are many other paradox statements with Scotland. A lot of people up here see through the bullshit especially younger people, because the math aint mathing. The current system isn't working, and people are feeling it more and more. If the tories or Reform gets back in at the next election, which is looking likely at this stage, because Starmer is actually pathetic imo, it's another nail in the UK coffin. The UK government have had multiple opportunities to make the situation more fair but they just don't which goes back to my first comment, they just want the land and resources they don't give a fuck about us up here.
Also, I'm old enough to remember when the US and UK had so many unmanned sonar systems in the North Atlantic that they fully expected to detect Soviet subs. Good times. Maybe it wouldn't have worked. Sure sounded good.
It's compelling television but wildly off-base - Scotland would never have closed that military base after becoming independent, not as a country with eyes on EU and NATO membership and a continued close relationship with the UK.

Yeah, because the geniuses who have been running it the past 4 years have been doing so great. The rebirth of Isis, the absolute debacle of the Afghanistan withdrawal, Iran funding numerous terrorist groups, Hamas attacking Israel, Russia invading Ukraine, and Chinese balloons flying over our heads for days with zero response. Within TWO years of taking office, Europe got the worst war it has seen since 1945. Maybe going with younger, newer blood won't be such a bad thing.
This scene is comedy gold. Everything she said is stupid. The Scots would not kick out the USN. And Russian missile subs operate in the arctic ocean and have the range to strike continental US. This isn't 1964 where Russians needed to sail around Bermuda to have the range.
