You really should have given a nod to Morello's radically political side projects The Nightwatchman and The Street Sweeper Social Club (with Boots Riley).
This "Purity Control" of Rage Against the Machine is very unfair and irrational. Most mainstream metal bands make essentially the same critiques as Rage. True, those others are not Socialists, but they pose themselves as being against the system as well. Megadeth signed up with the major label Capitol Records immediately after releasing their first album, for example. And there's pictures of Mustaine and Friedman wearing t-shirts with the symbol of Anarchy.
True Anarchy is extreme right wing. Rational right-wingers understand that anarchy can become tyranny when a Collective mob rules decides to infringe on the Individual. Therefore they sacrifice absolute anarchy for Capitalism as a compromise. The fairest system humans can possibly come up with. Each Individual chooses their own "system" by spending the fruits of their labor at Business that has similar values, lowest price, best options, whatever. Deciding what job and wages they want, instead of government destroying that union between Employer and Employee. Every dollar spent is like a vote. But Consumers and markets are the "checks and balances"... If anything, your Mustaine example shows Mustaine is not the thirstiest Capitalist in the room. He would had made way more money if he sold the typical popular product (Liberalism), like Morello did. He instead marketed to a smaller Consumer base and was satisfied with his lower earning potential. But Morello ended up being the better and more viscous Capitalist. He sold a product (socialism) he really didn't believe in, but understood that Consumer base was bigger and more impressionable. Morello has made five times what the more ethical Mustaine has earned. Even with Mustaine having dozens of better songs. Morello ripped off his Consumer and they still worship him. Mustaine's ego probably hates himself knowing he would have had more glory if he had just sung conformist jingles like Morello has all these years. But that's the Darwinian state of Capitalism and compromising profits because of principles. Morello just has no principles, which according to Socialists makes him a stereotypical Capitalist. Having been a longtime part of my local punk/hardcore scene, I’d probably have strong opinions early on with their path, but as I get older, I see their use of the system as their way to criticize that same system as incredibly clever and in line with their subtle sense of humor. It proves the point that many people including those in charge simply aren’t listening. But, by increasing the likelihood of their music reaching the masses to spread their message to those that hear more than just a sweet Morello riff or the predominantly tamer radio hits, deeper tracks like “Freedom,” “Know Your Enemy,” and “Wind Below” can be quite transformative for active listeners. As for the financial side of it all, I can see the clear argument, but I know that with their most recent tour, they made large donations to local nonprofits in those cities coming straight out of the ticket sales. Sidenote: I would’ve loved to hear mentions of Zack’s pre-rage hardcore punk bands, Hardstance and in particular, Inside Out. The best music cones from the worst of humanity... do as I say, not as I do. That's the RATM legacy. Andilove that they're more exposed for the hypocrites that they are, everyday.
Good synopsis of RATM. All these wannabe revolutionaries like to throw shade at others and organaize in collectives because, frankly, they are kind of lacking on an individual level.
Their music is dated. It’s just so 90s sounding. And the fact that they give credence to a novel that advocates for violent revolution is sickening. Repressive tolerance is exactly what the nazis used. Communism is not that different in their oppression of dissenting voices and violence. And don’t tell me it’s about socialism because no one can actually tell me what socialism is
I dunno - that first album will always be an all-time favorite for me. As for “being in the machine,” even Public Enemy had a label put their albums out, along with NWA et cetera. I don’t think the message was ever truly felt to be more important than the music and, anyway, it should come to no one’s surprise when performers behave performatively. I mean, David Bowie wasn’t actually an alien either.
My biggest problem with RATM right from the first time I heard them: "America sucks, but we'll be glad to take as many American dollars from your youth as possible." Most RATM fans are classic midwits.
De La Rocha and Morello are absolutely still political. Sometimes people just need a break man. Zac has been seen going to Pro-Palestine protests and he and Morello donated around 475,000 to reproductive rights groups. I don't know what people expect from political activists, they have to make a living to object to the fact that they have to do that! I agree that they should donate more money but they really haven't abandoned their cause or "became the machine".
I think they are and we’re genuine! Yeah they were on a major label but that’s where you get the biggest platform, why not make a major label pay to market your message?! Use them, use their money. They put a song on the Godzilla soundtrack which was about criticizing movies and specifically criticized Godzilla the movie. Sure they could have tried to do it all on their own on an indie label and none of us would have ever have heard of them and they would have reached like 3 people.

So stunning and brave to take a stand against the "man" when you're born with a silver spoon in your mouth.
I'd be curious to hear your opinion on what this band should have done instead of adding a message they clearly felt passionate about in their music? How else were they supposed to get their message out?
For all those people who say that they are now the machine and that they are "hypocrites" for keeping the royalties that this system leaves, they swam alongside the machine to give that message to the people Because we accept that we cannot change a system that has been in use for more than 100 years but expose the injustice it brings, so they are not hypocrites even if they or we do not we wanted We all live in this great system that uses damn money to live so they will take their share of their great work, it does not make them hypocrites but people cannot be pleased
You do realize that all of the people who generally push for socialism are not the working class. They are rich. Look at Bernie sanders, aoc and Noam Chomsky. Socialism is more profitable than capitalism
OK, I gotta know. Is it true that Zack and Chris were friends? I read that somewhere and the thought of it makes me feel better about liking both RATM and Audioslave.

I and countless others were horrificly scammed by RATM's first producer Garth Richardson at a "school" created by him (one young man died via poor choices made in trying to pay the school's prices which bordered on extortion), so RATM turning out to be fake is no surprise.
They're not fake. Having money in a capitalist society is not immoral especially considering how much money they've given away.
@@deathbyslipknot people can give away all they money they ever could and it would still never change the selfish choices they made, nor the consequences that took place as a result.
@@41illusion what selfish choices?
@@deathbyslipknot it doesn't matter, provided said choices are genuinely selfish. Selfishness is selfishness, period.
@@41illusion what are you even talking about at this point?
Made great, timeless music. Can't take that away. But to then them hypocrites is an understatement. You're a pos for being able to pay your rent on the backs of migrant workers but Zach has his house in the LA hills adorned with Renaissance art. Morello as well. The best music cones from the worst of humanity... do as I say, not as I do. That's the RATM legacy. Andilove that they're more exposed for the hypocrites that they are, everyday.
Communism is when no money
Shoulda named the band - condescending commies.
We need a Dethklok documentary!

Many music artists in the American counter culture of the 60s came from privileged upper class backgrounds. It's easy to take a stand against the Vietnam War when you know you'll never have to serve and put your life on the line. Trust fund hippies then, trust fund punks now.
