For the plot-hole in "Sending Core memories through the Recall tube" the developers say Joy didn't do that because of Joy's arrogance, she doesn't trust the other emotions at all and she prefers to keep them with her.
Joy being an arrogant control freak is like the one thing I remember from this movie, so that makes sense.

In a way, that did make a perfect ending, but, in another way, it's like what StreamVid7 said.
They illustrated how bringing bing-bong back could be psychologically devastating. In a way, bing-bong's death is critical to riley's emotional growth.

Dont know if I would say that exactly. I took him as a literal imaginary friend who riley just had to let go of. The whole film is showing how children/people deal with hard situations and what emotions drive us in the situations. Its showing us that riley has lost her joy and sadness so is driven simply by fear and anger (sometimes disgust but mostly the other 2) and to get joy and sadness (which we find out are both very important) back into her life she need to grow as a person. Part of that was forgetting about her imaginary friend that kept her safe when she was younger, but now she is older she needs to find more grown up ways of processing her feelings. That's how we get her breaking down to her parents at the end because even though happiness and sadness are back in her life, she has grown and her emotions have grown with her.

Oh totally, but don't worry! That wont happen until they hit that puberty button! Then Sadness will go crazy and throw Joy right out the HQ window! Then the other emotions (Fear, Anger & Disgust) will FREAK THE EFF OUT, because, what are they supposed to do now? Do nothing? Team up with Sadness?! Yes! Teaming up with Sadness will somehow seem like a good idea, even though it probably isn't....its very confusing! But don't worry! Joy will eventually make her way back to HQ!
Actually depression is more like not feeling rather than feeling sad... I would say Riley was depressed when she didn’t have any core memories and the controls started to turn gray ...like when she was in the bus not caring for anything and just thinking about trying to go back

You know, Joy should have just simply let Sadness do what she had to do, cos after all, she is an emotion and emotions do their part, otherwise none of that would ever of happened... Antagonists don't have to be individuals and can be in any shape or form. Take Fallout for example. Fallout's recurring main antagonist is radiation (if you look at it from a perspective or aka my opinion) which isn't a living being that try's to stop me (or dead since zombies are dead but reanimated. Remember dead means once lived but now not alive but non-living/inanimate objects mean they never lived once. Robots are another thing.)

You know, that’s been bugging me ever since I saw the movie. They should have tried it and then it somehow breaks due to it not being meant to carry a memory of such magnitude. Easy fix right there.

If you noticed, Joy experienced all 5 emotions throughout the movie. She cried in the mind dump, gagged at the imaginary boyfriend, got scared waking up Chuckles, and anger dragging Sadness along and getting nothing but bad news. My theory? all the emotions have emotions but the one they are. Sadness has every emotion but sadness because that's what she is.

To people who do not get how feelings can have feelings:
Without one, there would not be the other. Without sadness, there would be no Joy. So the feelings would be able to feel the opposite feelings when needed. Without fear there would be no bravery, with no anger there would be no peace, etc etc. So technically the feelings would handle more than just their default feelings.

I think the purpose of joy crying and sadness learning to smile is that emotions get more complicated as you grow up. They're developing with Riley. People cry when they're happy and smile when they're sad and when you get older it's harder to distinguish just one emotion you're feeling

You have more emotions, but in the movie, they're all kinda catagorized into one. Love, friendship, etc are all a joy thing. depression, Emptiness, self-hate are Sadness. Etc.

A subtle detail in this ending, which is that Riley's brain in the post credit scene never evolves beyond the 11 year old girl stage as shown in the end of the actual film, despite this being 20 years later

I think the point was that Riley was supposed to feel sad. This whole breakdown occurred because Joy was desperately trying to restrain sadness and prevent her from expressing herself. That's why every memory she touched became sad... because Riley's emotions were trying to balance themselves out. Joy had held back sadness until it just couldn't be restrained anymore. This is always why sadness was the only one who could take the idea of running away out of her head and unlock the control panel.
I'm sure you could write a novel (and I'm sure many a high school student will write a psychology paper) on the hidden meaning and metaphor from inside out.

I remember thinking how weird it was that if any of the emotions left head-quarters then all they could do was wander aimlessly around the long term memory until they find one of the islands and tightrope over the memory dump to get back.
The thing is, at the end we see those maintenance guys from below fixing up a newer and improved control panel- so how did they get in? From the looks of those repairs they would have needed loads of tools and spare parts- did they tightrope walk across from one of the islands? How many fell into the memory dump during the crossing? Did they send them up the recall tube? Did Riley just spend ten minutes staring into space remembering different types of machinery?
There must be an easy way to access the head-quarters that Joy and Sadness don't know about- all they need to do is ask.
They're clearly considered fairly important- so instead of sneaking around and invading Riley's dreams- why not go up to somebody and say, "Hi we're Joy and Sadness and unfortunately we've had to leave head-quarters to recover some core memories. Now we need to get back quickly or Riley's entire personality will break down (not that anyone will notice.)" People would show them the way- or if the way back was destroyed then at least they'd have more people helping them come up with a new plan.

my theory is that it works a bit differently for each emotion. every single personification inside their heads is split into different sub-emotions, and this is how the whole spectrum is represented.
