You speak of jellyfish as "the most efficient swimming animals in the ocean." I wonder if it would be possible to build a mechanical propulsion system that works like a jellyfish, perhaps with a peizoelectric pulsing motor, a magnetic vibrating system, or just a crank, pushing a membrane in and out. Could such a jellyfish-style propulsion system drive a submarine? Perhaps not fast, but quietly. Or, perhaps a surface ship. Whichever, quieter and using less fuel/electric power than with regular spinning propellers.
Soft material and studying the motion especially creating the pressure difference associated with the feeding mechanism are very hard, especially when you try to integrate those functions to a small jellyfish.
Such a stupid idea. Anyone with the brain of a Jellyfish would know that you cant make it go where you want. The currents will take it where it takes it. If your electronics can handle the depths, it would be far better to throw a prop on it and put it where you want. So much money and wasted on such dumb ideas.
