    The ending is one of the most beautiful shots ever. I love him sitting at the crossroads looking at his next move and wondering which direction to go. It leaves it all up to interpretation. But that ending was still a very nice "moving on" type of peaceful ending to me. After what he went through, it's the start of him choosing a new direction to go.

    Surprised no one has mentioned this, but on the DVD there's a hidden easter egg if you punch in a cheat code in your remote and it's the logo on that package, and when clicked on it's Tom Hanks revealing that the package is "a solar powered, water proof, satellite phone"

    • @Theomite
      @Theomite 3 роки тому +5

      It's a funny gag, but ridiculous when you consider that the package was a gift sent by a woman to her boyfriend overseas living in an urban environment where access to phones would be ever-present and long-distance calling plans were ubiquitous. The phone "theory" has always been a joke (the Super Bowl ad) or sarcasm from anyone involved making it. In the penultimate script it's the redhead sending her husband (Cowboy at the beginning of the film) two bottles of homemade salsa hoping he'll come back to her.

    On the big screen with the theater surround sound, that plane crash sequence was totally immersive and terrifying. He was actually fortunate that the waves prevented him from leaving the island on the rubber raft, because he would've died without having the preparation and survival skills that he developed.

  • @maximillianosaben
    @maximillianosaben 3 роки тому +27

    With the exception of the scene with the fire on the beach, all of the nighttime scenes on the island were filmed during the day but added filters to make it look like night.
    Tom Hanks took a year off to lose weight for the latter half of the movie. In that time, Robert Zemeckis filmed another movie called What Lies Beneath, starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. He used the same crew from this movie to ensure that they all had work and were available to return after the hiatus.

    For the island footage (most of the movie), every line of dialog was looped and every single sound was sampled or created by a foley artist. This is because the actual sound of lapping waves was overpoweringly loud.

    Pro tip if you ever find yourself stuck on an island like this guy, light the biggest fire you can. On this island I would recommend just throwing as much wood into the fire as possible, but some islands you could light an entire section on fire. Same if your lost in the woods, light a tree on fire. The smoke will alert any first responders who will notify a fire department and they will investigate the fires.

He kept messing up until he realized that the water refracting sunlight was throwing off his aim, like he dipped the spear in and looked at how it appeared to be in a different angle underwater. Really cool choice the director made in this movie, the movie has a musical score, but only until he wakes up on the island. There is no score the entire time he's there, and it only kicks back in once he sails away and looks back on the island. The director said he chose to do this to make Tom Hanks character seem even more isolated on the island, really cool idea and I think it certainly works!

What a great film and story about something thats actually happened to people. Tom Hanks is an amazing actor and I dont think he does a whole lot thats...amazing, but he always comes across as a "real" and genuine person/character. Its always believable. He'll never be a Daniel Day Lewis and transform into some wild character but he''s plays the perfect "normal" person, and I mean that in the best possible way. He's just fantastic. It'll be a sad and terrible day when we finally lose him.

    Castaway - He was cast away, his job, his plans, his fiance, his entire concept of existence. That final scene is his rebirth. His delivery of the package is a nod to him completing his prior life and letting go of the past. The girls comment "You look lost, cowboy" and then describing where the roads before him will take him is another nod to his new life. This movie goes far deeper than just being lost on an island.

    87 is my favorite number
    i used to keep a list of every time i saw 87 in movies and tv shows and it was LONG
    my theory is that it sounds much more random than a number like 75 or 80, and it's an odd number rather than an even number so it sounds more random that way too, especially since it's not a multiple of 5... so it shows up a lot when people want a high number that feels random and not too much like someone specifically picked it
    anyway, this is one of the first movies i noticed it in 10+ years ago

When you order something on Amazon and get it the next day, know that it takes a lot of hard work to get that package to you. Great reaction, by the way! This film takes so much from Hanks's character, and in the end, only gives him, himself.

    5:25 I've gotta say, you are the only reactor/commentator/creator I've watched (so far) who has spent a significant amount of time on Tom Hanks' character's career as a FedEx employee. Kudos. I've always felt it's an incredibly important part of the story and so many other reactors/commentators/creators just seem to bypass. Looking forward to the rest of the video. I'll probably edit this comment as I progress, I hope that won't bother you.

    Bro this was one of my favorite childhood movies of all time, but after hearing your commentary on the themes that you somehow picked up on that i NEVER even considered (for example, how Hanks's character was basically humbled to realize that time was never in his control), i had to go back and watch it again. I cried as a child when he lost Wilson, but I'm crying even harder now AFTER finishing the damn movie keeping in mind the points you brought up in this vid. Way to fucking go, buddy... keep it up!

    Hi, I'm from Germany and watch a lot of movie reactions from many channels. But I have to get rid of something. Your reactions are definitely the best. Especially since you manage to react and comment from the viewer's point of view as well as from the point of view of a filmmaker. You pay attention to things that others do not pay attention to. It's just fun to watch. Please keep it up. I would be interested in your reaction to K-Pax and Ex machina.

    Tom Hanks character created Wilson to keep himself sane. It was actually a very healthy approach and what most people will do automatically. Love always prevails. She should have went upstairs and told Mr. Big to bounce.😂

    What I love too is the angel reference. The Texas woman who sculpts angel wings...it’s on the package, he keeps it on the island and paints it on the canopy of the metal and again when he tries to deliver it to the Texas woman at the end. You see him look hopefully in her direction in the end. It made for a hopeful ending for me. As a Christian God often says do you control anything? And I say no. I can only control myself and my reactions. Can’t control what happens to us. I thought it was so well done. Just trying to figure out how to open the coconuts, make fire, fish. It was a learning process. I would definitely have had a Wilson. I talk to myself too. Good reaction.

    I've seen a few docus where some guy with survival skills will go off into the wilderness alone to get back to their roots, with just some clothing and a knife etc. Except, they're missing something vital: humans are a pack animal. Typically after a couple of months alone, they end up mainly crying at the camera a lot and going slowly mad, then giving up just to see another human face. You can survive alone, but you can't really live alone. Not completely.
