What I like about the 9800X3D news is that it proves that there is still genuine demand for quality hardware releases. It's not just an economically cool climate that "appears" to be correlated with a lot of PC enthusiasts piling on complaints, stemming from poor professional reviews. The reason this is important is that it signals to the chipmakers that people are truly willing to spend money on the makers' products if the marketing is honest, the performance uptick compared to the prior generation is meaningful, and the price is reasonable.
True, I like seeing this as well. How people can get excited about a genuinely good product. Shouldn't forget, though, that some part of the crazy high demand will also be FOMO kicking in with at least some folks.
Due to the advanced market-competition as of late, processors and gpu's are finally starting to utilize most of the hardware we buy. This, with amd's mantle (it became dx12 basically), has made the entire game-dev industry, finally utilize the hardware to a way larger degree. THAT is why the market "want" stronger hardware. Developers never optimize, and always add more features. But with 60hz dying, EVEN ON PHONES 🔥 I am stoked to see things being improved further.
I wish intel would drop the majority of their sku's no one wants a celeron or pentium anymore or even the atom. Just make the core 5 7 9 and not waste the silicon on the trash. Also, just make them all with integrated graphics. Simplify the names it's so damn confusing. They need to focus on quality now more than ever and build their brand back what good is fast if it can't compete just build a great quality product at a reasonable price and kick out more fpga's there is a high demand for those.
My local Microcenter had 25+ stock of 9800X3Ds on Saturday per the website. They had several bundles available as well. I walked in and grabbed my 9800X3D and all the parts for my new build without any issues. Today... All chips and bundles are sold out.
yea i just happen to figure out there was a restock on saturday and grabbed one. Same store got a restock today so seems like a consistent restock schedule
I wish microcenter had more locations. Closest one is a 3 hour drive away, at which point I may as well buy from a scalper since the gas cost to get there and back will add up to about the same amount as buying a scalped one on ebay. I always kind of hate it when some people say "just go to your local microcenter" lmao.
Holy shit. I didn't realize how lucky I got. Went to Micro Center Sat morning, walked in expecting to get a 7600X3D, saw they had the 9800X3D and figured I might as well. Ironically, they had just sold out of the Thermalright Phantom Spirit cpu cooler I wanted.

I'm also a 7950x3d user. I use the 'Ryzen Master' app and put it in 'Game Mode'. It will shut down cores 8-15, using 0-7. 0-7 have the v-cache. If I know I'm going to be doing heavy lifting, I put it in 'Creator Mode', or 'all cores on'.
@@InexcyeSolms-handle-is-taken im so scared of ryzen master, i feel like i got my 7950 x3d gerry rigged ventriloquist style and i dance around the fact it could be better..
@@narachi- When you put Ryzen Master in 'Game Mode' or 'Creator Mode' you aren't affecting the clock or voltage settings of the CPU. It's just telling the CPU to use the right cores for the task. So, no need to worry about frying your chip. Before I tried Ryzen Master I was tweaking the BIOS to try and fix the stutter problem I had during gaming. When I first tried Ryzen Master I didn't return my BIOS to defaults and something about my CPU tweaks and Ryzen Master didn't get along and the computer failed POST. It forced me into the BIOS and I defaulted everything. Then everything loaded without issue and has every time since. I leave it in 'Game Mode' most of the time. I only take it out for major decompression jobs. Maybe once a month. As long as you stay out of the settings you aren't comfortable with--use presets--then Ryzen Master is just an easy way to get rid of that freaking stutter. I have a dual monitor set up and I would watch a core or two in the 8 - 15 group jump to life on Ryzen Master every 5 - 10 seconds, and every time they did I got the stutter in my game's FPS. 'Game Mode' on Ryzen Master fixed that for me.
@InexcyeSolms-handle-is-taken I use process lasso to keep games on 0-7. In bios set perfer frequency CCD, in process lasso force games to cache CCD (0-7). Keeps games from jumping between CCDs and anything else that runs in the background just hits the frequency cores. Probably in reality little to no effective difference between the two methods though.
You need to remember if you add Factorio into the benchmark suite you can't use an early game save. When you get deeper into the game which _every_ person that plays it is obviously at, THAT'S where performance is tough and CPU hierarchy changes completely.
@@GamersNexus Nice. Almost everyone benches that game wrong and vcache numbers get *_really_* inflated early game, assumably because _everything_ is sitting in vcache, but that changes big time later on. @@GamersNexus I don't know what saves you are using but it might be good to contact the devs and ask for some. I read on a site earlier, that Intel refused an RMA for a faulty 14th gen CPU, because liquid metal was used on it, which rubbed off the printing on the IHS. According to Intel, using liquid metal on the IHS will void the warranty. I expect you know about this, but I was quite shocked when I read about it. Keep up the exceptional work GN, you are second to none!
Maybe using liquid metal is not such a good idea? The substance has known issues associated with it. If you want to take a risk with it then that's on you. But don't expect to drag others into your foolishness with you.
@@1pcfred But that has nothing to do with the defect. And a damaged IHS is irrelevant because the CPU once unstable can't be fixed, it has to be replaced.
@@BL-yj2wp that's not how it works though. You do something that voids the warranty and the warranty is void. As soon as that liquid metal was applied the warranty was over. Maybe it isn't fair and doesn't make sense but that's how it is. Now they could do the decent thing and make an exception. But there's nothing forcing them to do that. In the position they're in now they have to burn everyone they can. I certainly would. Sometimes you can afford to be generous and sometimes you can't. This is one of those times where they can't. It's bad luck and it goes around.
i don't get people rushing for the 9800x3d, just wait 1-2 week to buy it, no need to go to a scalper, worst case you will have a bios update that will make it better and even more stable. Intel is hit so hard nowadays, hope they will get back up and in the race with their new architecture, competition is always good when it's close between competitor.
Even 1-2 weeks of waiting isn't all that long with a new product. I was roughly planning to get myself a 9800X3D in December before Christmas, and even that feels relatively early for me. But my one rule is to wait at least around a month after a product's release to ensure any potential major issues have been found by then and ideally resolved. With the crazy demand for this CPU, though, I am honestly already shifting my plans to the new year since I have a feeling I won't be able to get one even in December.
mm, I think the bit of the puzzle you are missing is that scalpers actively manipulate the market to ensure zero suppyly. People the become opportunistic scalpers, limited supply .. .prices go up .. etc etc.. Those scalpers are now making money.
@@gmonkmanscalpers are only making money if either the supply just isn't there at all or it's a limited availability product... For Factorio, it’s much better to use an “ultra-late game” save file. The early game saves with unlocked UPS can fit a significant portion of data in the X3D cache which won’t be significant for late game.
If you end up with a large gap in the benchmark schedule it could be a cool to see a comparison of how CPUs with different cache fare differently for savegames at different stages. We might pretty much be able to see each lower-caching CPU bow out in order.

It's not just that the 9800X3D is a winning part. It's a winning part that's a drop in upgrade with no other parts being needed, unless you REALLY skimped on the cooling of whatever you're replacing. If you're already on AM5 you don't need a new mobo, faster ram, anything.

I find it incredible that YOU have to find these things out (ex: parking the wrong CCD). You’d think they would do their own QC, to make sure it works, and not frustrate their customers.
I'm not sure I agree. This bug was so far in the weeds and would affect so few actual users that I think they would have lost a lot of money trying to get QC a fine tooth comb measured in microns.
Because of your glowing review and even Linus Licks Tips, I took a look at the 9800x3d expecting it to be out of my price range. The cpu mobo combos on Newegg were 150 dollars cheaper than the 7950x and other cpus plus motherboards. So it was a total no brainer. I'm not surprised they sold out. 42:30 AMD is talking about their own mistake *without* talking about it. AMD referring to ATI's struggles with high end cards so long ago makes it sound like they really don't want to discuss their own mistakes recently in pricing Radeon cards too high. Definitely the year of reaping what they have sowed -- but we also need Intel to get through this and get its stuff together. Consumers need the two fighting as hard as they can!
It's hard for me to feel sorry for them considering the behind-the-scenes shenanigans they've reportedly pulled in the past with regards to AMD. Without any hard evidence, I've heard of them paying OEMs to not use AMD, or subsidizing motherboard manufacturers giving them more leverage over production features among other things. And this likely extended to the data center market as well.

I don't care much for RT, don't think it's worth it (yet), so I would agree. However the overall market seems to think differently. Intel should consider bundling a 9800x3d together with their 285k to move their inventory

Bundling the full CPU would be wasteful. Since they have chiplet design now, they can add just a couple of cut up 9800x3d cores into each 285 and call it 298x3d

Scalpers are buying them.... Seeing them on facebook marketplace for ridiculous prices already
Small supply my guy…

I wish microcenter had more locations. Closest one is a 3 hour drive away, at which point I may as well buy from a scalper since the gas cost to get there and back will add up to about the same amount as buying a scalped one on ebay.

@@InexcyeSolms-handle-is-taken I'll have to take a look at this. I try to avoid the ryzen master software if I can
You need to remember if you add Factorio into the benchmark suite you can't use an early game save. When you get deeper into the game which _every_ person that plays it is obviously at, THAT'S where performance is tough and CPU hierarchy changes completely.

It's not just that the 9800X3D is a winning part. It's a winning part that's a drop in upgrade with no other parts being needed, unless you REALLY skimped on the cooling of whatever you're replacing. If you're already on AM5 you don't need a new mobo, faster ram, anything.
What does Really skimping on cooling even mean when you can cool the 9800X3D with a 25$ cooler.

😂😂😂
@@zodwraith5745 many Americans aren't even aware of how high the prices are for PC parts in Europe. Those who are, do not want that to happen in the US! Nobody wants to pay more for the same thing
@@lucarescigno I really don't care what they want. I only care about what I want. I want to live in an advanced country capable of producing technology. I don't want to be known as a citizen of a quaint country that only grows corn and soybeans. How's that grab you?
Here in Australia 🇦🇺, I was fortunate enough to get a Ryzen 9800X3D a launch 🚀 and have been very happy with its performance!
In addition, I checked with 6x local retain stores online and found out all their 9800X3D CPUs sold out within a few minutes! Restock maybe take at least a month or two as advised by a couple of these stores. I believe Hardware Unboxed review as well as yours, Gamers Nexus with your cpu results have created an excess demand for these X3D CPUs 🥰🥳💪✊👍
Nvidia CPU with a September 2025 launch? Sounds like it might be Switch 2 related...
I think many people are confused about this. It is mediatek cpu not nvidia. Nvidia just license the gpu to mediatek the same way AMD license gpu to samsung.
Good on you guys for being 1.) so open about corrections and 2.) for putting them only behind the charity news. Corrections are important.
16:18 I just love this kind of humor. Thanks Steve!
Fellow North Carolinian here, so happy to hear about the shirt sales. I wish I knew about it, I'd LOVE to have one. If you get extra XLs let me know :)
Is B & H Photo legit? I have seen them come up a few times when searching for parts, but seemed sketch due to that strange crossover. Digital photography store carries PC parts
100%. Yes. We have bought a lot of camera gear from them and they have been great for us. As usual, just make sure it's not some marketplace seller. I'm not sure if they even have that feature though.
Surprisingly yes. They started off as photo equipment but branched out into general consumer electronics and parts. They have a long standing reputation at this point.
They are fine
B&H is the hidden gem. I've found items that were out of stock everywhere else there on sale multiple times before.
They are 100% legit.
They carry many types of electronics
I thought the 7950x3d results were a bit off, because I defiantly see significantly higher numbers (as I have a 7950x3d), but I also run linux (and most games in linux using gamemoderun) so I though it was just a weird scheduler problem with windows, glad to see you guys got it resolved!
To be fair, Wendell showed that, at least at time of launch, there were also weird scheduling issues with Windows, likely in part because the scheduler in Linux already knows how to handle asymmetric systems including managing latency between cores in multi CCD and multi chip systems
Was interested in the 9800X3D but i might as well wait for the Ryzen 9 9950X3D
Steve's humor is getting better
Was great to see the slacker back and looking well..!!!
The microcenter near me has been restocking them every day with 25+ in stock. I picked one up on Saturday and have been loving it.
@18:14 lol that whole lawsuit section was pretty funny but this bit was the funniest. "Thus Intel knew its packaging was false and misleading..." hahaha yeah, like Intel needed tech review channels to reveal to them that the CPU's were defective. Yo, they knew.
Thankyou for keeping clear of politics. Even though I'm not in the US, hearing that upcoming tariffs are likely makes my blood boil and justifies my decision to avoid reading news or watching anything political for the next few years. Keep up the great work!
I don't understand, AMD knows 3d variant chips are popular, why launch with such a limited amount? They being sold on amazon for 700 bucks atm, probably from scalpers
Definitely from scalpers. May just be used too much supply on the initial Zen 5 launch -- that one was overstocked, so the opposite problem. Don't know!
because they make more money selling X3D parts in server tier products.
scaplers + too high demand
@@WayStedYou what would X3D be useful for in a server?
Limited supply drives demand, which generates hype, which generates demand... lol
+1 for adding Factorio to the benchmarks, especially with Space Age out now and probably a bunch of new players!! Thanks Steve. 🤩
47 pages to set up a 7950X3D on Windows? At that point just spend your 47 pages of reading installing a Linux distro and throw your taskset/wine_cpu_topology command in the launch options in steam.
Why does it take 47 pages to explain how to plug a flash drive in?
@@1pcfredYou'd have to ask AMD and Microsoft about that, I'm confident I could train most people to plug in a flash drive in 10 pages.
Powershell script.
@@wctgttm I'd hope so. There's always some that are lost causes though.
I figured the 7950x3d was having issues with "game mode" (been a long time since i had to think about those things), glad you got it sorted
I wish they would stop focusing on RT and AI in gaming GPUs. Just give us more raster.
I don't care much for RT, don't think it's worth it (yet), so I would agree. However the overall market seems to think differently. RDNA2 and 3 was consistently better value for pure raster, at every price level really - yet AMD lost market share. People seem to be willing to pay the Nvidia premium for RT and AI upscaling. Given that it is very reasonable for AMD to focus on that main weak spot that gets pointed out in just about every review of their products as their biggest downside.
@@Hugh_I Well, my wife's 6700XT has held up way better than my 3070. I hit VRAM limits all the time. My next build will be all AMD.
Personally if I'm dropping 2k on a GPU I want to be using DSR, not DLSS.
@@memitim171 No gaming GPU should ever have been $2k. That's insane.
@@KrazzyKlown yeah, certainly a better buy. 6700XT was crazy good value for most of its lifetime. The skimping on VRAM from Nvidia should IMHO be a bigger deal than any theoretical RT perf. Esp. with 8GB-Cards like the 3070, whose RT perf wasn't that great to begin with, and gets virtually useless in scenarios where you need more than 8GB and can't even mitigate perf losses with DLSS, cause it needs even more VRAM.
