    Writers love Kirby because he was a wellspring of ideas designed for others to iterate off of. When a writer approaches Kirby's work they see an infinite number of ready to pick up masterpieces, and a no matter how many people touch those characters, settings, and ideas, you can always return to the core of Kirby's work and start over from there. Tom King's Mister Miracle is absolutely indicative of this quality of Kirby's work.

    I've always interpreted the ending of King's run not so much as an "Is Scott alive or not?", but rather as "Happiness exist. The ghosts of the past will never leave, but they can't take away your happiness".
    I think it's a very uplifting ending. The whole "Darkseid is" is sort of a variation on "S*it happens". Bad stuff will always exist, but as long as we have love, we can get through it.
    Awesome video, Owen ❤️

      I always thought the ending was about having a family having the peace of a happy ending whether Scott felt like it's a trap and having to escape but deciding against it. Whether he deserves it, whether he fears it not being real, he has it and he's alright

    The saddest moment in this book, to me, is the distance between Barda and Scott when she’s giving birth to their first child.
    He’s so far and emotionally unavailable, and she doesn’t really notice, because her ideas of love and closeness are just as broken and missing as his…

    i shed a tear because this tribute was so beautiful and what made me uncomfortable with how jack kirby and stan lee’s relationship was how tumultuous it was. At least they hashed it out towards the end and the comic harkens back to that beautifully, which in all honesty kirby deserves because of how at times he was overlooked and also how prolific he was.🕊❤️

    Other artists at the time of Jack Kirby were told to mimic his style. The only other artist at that time to try and be imitated was Neal Adams. No other artists came close to the dynamic style of these two legends.

      Well said. Although Adams did not have the world building creative genius of Kirby, it can be argued that the comic artform can be divided into two periods. Kirby's cartoon style and Adam's photorealism style.

    As a person who feels that ComicPop is the gold standard for comic channels, I’ve really grown to enjoy your videos over the last few days. You seem reasonable, well researched and you treat every video like the viewer is new to the subject. The latter is an massively underrated problem with “new media”… too specialized. Don’t alienate and fail to inform every viewer.

    According to Evanier, Kirby did not get a higher wage per se. He had to do more than one book with a writer and an artist page rate with an editor salary on top. He worked four times harder to earn that money as opposed to working as much as others for a higher wage.

    • @caligulapontifex5759
      @caligulapontifex5759 3 роки тому +4

      Kirby came from a generation that experienced the great depression and where most people were loyal company men regardless of the circumstances. It's hard to image nowadays, where people leave their jobs for a higher salary or benefits at a drop of a hat (not saying that's wrong). Marvel management took advantage of that loyalty and exploited him. They promised him a lot but never delivered. It took years for Kirby to finally take the step and leave for DC. Unfortunately, DC despite early promises also betrayed him. Most famously, by having Curt Swan redraw superman's face on the Jimmy Olsen comic book Kirby was drawing.

    See, I've always vehemently disagreed with the "Scott is dead" theory, and a lot of what is said in this video backs up my belief that he is alive. Firstly, it's Tom King doing a story about mental health. An ending where the person loses their battle before it's even begun - at least in the story - feels very morbid and hopeless, something that King, who is very socially conscious, isn't likely to do. Secondly, it's a Kirby tribute. Kirby's whole thing, as evidenced in the video clip at the beginning is about the enduring human (or in this case New God) spirit and it's ability to overcome the struggles life throws at it. To me, the ending of Mr Miracle is that of a man who, whilst taking it day by day and gradually improving, still has that lingering doubt about whether he truly deserves to enjoy life because of the traumas that have affected his self-worth. It's not about whether or not he's alive or dead, it's whether he's truly alive or just existing in a world that can be harsh and cold and unforgiving, like Apokolips, or bright and hopeful like New Genesis, even with it's flaws. As the Hamilton quote goes "Dying is easy son, living is harder). It;s a story of hopefulness in the face of reality and all of it's pros and cons, and that what makes it beautiful. To me, a "He was dead all along" twist would do this story a disservice

      @shut up I've always thought of it as a combination of Scott's damaged psyche messing with him (the last issue essentially being him coming to terms with the fact that it always will, but it doesn't matter because he's choosing life) and the idea that this is just a world between continuites, because King has talked about how Kirby didn't really like being bound too heavily by continuity, and at the end of the story he is shown Rebirth by Metron, so to me that follows

      I mean Heroes in Crisis ended with a bunch of mentally ill characters dead having been murdered by a mentally ill Wally West. So… sounds pretty on brand to me

      @@sheltondaal6425 To me they're completely opposing stories though, one with the idea of Kirby's ethos in mind and the other without, hence why one is critically acclaimed and the other is resigned to the forgotten bin

      Agreed. I enjoyed how they left it ambiguous. In the end, it doesn’t matter if he’s in the real world or not, because he’s happy and that’s all that matters to him.
