Phil engineered some very cool clsoing transitions, moving from Midnight Rider to China Cat to the finale. The Quintet rules! Wish they did this more often, but happy to get a glimpse of it again.

Warren and jimmy are the only guitarists that played with Phil in Phil and friends that know how to solo together.. the modern version with graham has graham constantly soloing even over other players. Never fully takes the back seat.
Jimmy Herring is one of my favorite guitarists and he sounds great in this context. He isnt trying to sound like Jerry and brings a fresh sound to the music of the greatful dead. Warren Haynes I absolutely respect and recognize he is a very talented musician. I personally never was a big fan though. Saw him with 'The Dead', he sounded good on some of the uptempo stuff, giving it a neat allman bros type of vibe but IMO that big fat rock sound didnt work well on the deeper jams. I think here he is a nice contrast from Herring- that their different styles work well together. That fat fuzzy humbucker tone coupled with Herrings jazz-fusion like phrasing dancing on top sounds great, especially when Warren uses the slide. Whats nice is that neither sounds all that much like Jerry Garcia. They bring something fresh and different to the music. Their are plenty of guitarists who can mimic Jerry so well that you wouldnt be able to tell them apart- but where is the artistry is that?
For me the PLQ was like going to see the 1968/1969 Dead. They couldn't really pull off certain styles of the Dead like the countryied Dead stuff, they were primarily a jam entity. Phil really went hard in those peak years of 1999-2003, he wasn't afraid to just kick your ass and open a show with a 30 minute Cryptical/Other One/Dark Star sequence. I loved going to see Ratdog in that era in clubs and theaters to get the Blues, Rock, and the ballads, while Phil was delivering the jazzier, long form stuff I also love with a passion. Furthur wound up being a pretty nice compromise of the two approaches, but I'll always hold a soft spot for the PLQ, they were some of my favorite shows in the early 2000's, and all time.
What up dude?! I didn't know you were on G+. I see its been a while, 2013. I left Facebook, guess you figured that out. How's Amy? How's life?! Missed you bro. Hit me up!!

Fewer lineups I'd rather hear-if I have my pick of two guitar players I'd like to hear play together it's Herring and Haynes!
