Hey Scotty, I have 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. When I first start it, fires up and runs amazing. But if I try to start it back up after it's sits for less than 10 minutes, it dies, I have tried many things in your vids, taking your advice and all. It runs amazing outside of this issue. I have changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, pickup coil, I take care of it and don't run it hard, any advice?
Nope, Scotty called the 1999 to 2006 Celica crap because of its bad Yamaha engine design. He's said the same thing in other videos in the past. Yes, I thought it was the apocalypse, I immediately dropped prone and expected to be struck down by one of the four horsemen, then realized it was HIS Toyota and had to get up and go to work. I was a bit disappointed actually...

I had a 2000 VVTI model and had it for about 12 years, didn't miss a beat, eventually traded it in at 186k miles for a 2004 VVTI celica with little to no miles on it and one owner from New. J C me too. You have 130k and drive it daily plus I get on it quite often. It’s the oil pump/pan that’s the real issue and going to redline when you shouldn’t
Nope. GM, VW, BMW, Merc, Audi, Peugeot, Citroen, Renault, and some Fords won't. My brother in law's 2013 Explorer had 8K worth of problems in 5 years. Windows, locks, electric steering motor, Sunroof Motor, Hatch motor, rust...All those are not really preventable by driving slower/maintenance. Same with Nissan's CVT's or many DCT's. In Europe, all the I would say that most Korean/Japanese (except Nissan's) cars won't have problems if you take care of them.
Scotty is dead-on. Don't misinform people otherwise. I've known four 1999 Celica GT-S owners and two were on their 2nd motor. I beat the piss out of my cars and used to blow up American crap regularly until I switched to Toyota. They are by far the most reliable car manufacturer in the world.
Your amputating them ? whats the milage on them i could do with a new set. Already swapped them out once so this will be my third set, good milage though handles well aswell.
Scotty does have an evil twin who hates all things Toyota and also hates cat head pillows. If there is no cat head pillow exercise caution.Actually Scotty (if it is the real Scotty) is not ranking on Toyota as much as he is ranking on Yamaha. Remember, Scotty is a purist and he resents cross breeding with what he considers an inferior species.
@@goldengibus6300 2002 introduced the wrx in the us and in 2003 the 350z came people were more into turbocharged cars (fast and furious had a lot to do with it) and large displacement v8s (Muscle cars peaked in price back then) so the demand for high revving small 4 cylinder cars went down. Also 2008 happened
Scotty: "Here's Why Toyota Celicas are Crap" Toyota: "Our hostage rescue team has located your wife in the FCA headquarters. She'll be free within the hour, you can go back to your normal videos."
These engines had a couple of small issues (lift bolts, which is a very easy fix and was resolved in 2003) and the oil pan issue you mentioned (that is also easy to fix with a 1ZZ oil pan or a good aftermarket one for aggressive track racing), but otherwise they are excellent and have held up very well. Oil pump failures have happened to these pretty much exclusively because of driver error, dropping down into the wrong gear. My 2003 Celica GT-S has a 2ZZ-GE with 355,000 km on it. It is flawless. No leaks, works like new.
Lucky you, my 02 was gone at 120k, on my second engine and drive it around 2 hrs almost daily. Hopefully it continues to hold up since it's a nice fun car to drive, specially with that 6 speed. I'll have to get myself one of those oil pans.
I know 10 people who have either A2000 through 2006 Toyota Celica with the 2zz pushing close to 200,000 miles on the original engine and the only money they put into it is for basic maintenance
@@Montana270 he is old person and he has 3+ cars and his workplace is at home. also he stated that he always likes the lexus more when going to longer trips.
I know mileage does vary, BUT, I drive a 2000 celica with the 2zz and I haven't had a single issue for the 7 years I've driven it. I'll be rolling 230k miles soon, factory everything, and it's never ran better. Most dependable car / engine I've had, right up there with my GM 6.0. Just my $0.02 tho
Actually I disagree the GTs are very reliable. Yamaha builds fantastic heads. The motors are very stout. The 2ZZ just needs good oil and being aluminum, good coolant and a well maintained cooling system. I'm a mech and dont agree with Scotty this time around.
@@TempoMontagesThe fact that you call me dumb and then state "at auction" is very ironic. I've worked on plenty with high kms on original everything, it's all on how you maintain them. Like anything. Theres nothing wrong with the 2ZZ
My 00 GTS 6sp has 122k original engine. Still smooth as butter. I don't misshift and I don't go into lift around corners, those are just stupid things to do anyway.
First of all, I love your channel to death, now secondly, you can't be any more wrong about this. I have a 2000 Celica GTS with the 2zz engine, manual transmission, bought her new 19 years ago, as of now she has 360,000 miles on the engine, the ORIGINAL engine. She is driven hard ever since I bought her, and has not broken down even once, never left me stranded. The horror stories about this car, were often caused by people miss shifting, because of the close gate 6 speed, where you accidentally shift from top of 3th back to second instead of 4th, and you guessed it, boom. Drive it everyday, change oil every 3000 miles, and it will last you. Take care Scotty.
When I was looking at the GTS the dealer asked me if I had ever driven a manual before. They only recommended it to experienced drivers, which I was. I did have to get the transmission fixed once cause I grinded the gear going into 2nd, haha! The engine held up just fine, though.
The 2zzge can drive the oil pump to the point it cant suck oil fast enough. There are aftermarket gearsets and/or oil pumps to fix it, so.... Fix that and they work fine.
The oil pump has no problems at all. The thing is the 2zz engine may suffer from oil starvation when it passes 1g side force, to solve this you need a baffled oil sump, like a Morosso or one from Eliseparts. Doing this change, the oil pump will just run happily forever
The problem with these 2zzge engines was insufficient oil capacity and oil pans with no baffling. Both could be solved with an aftermarket oil pan. These things also commonly get destroyed by miss shifting at high rpms. Otherwise they are pretty reliable as long as they are cared for.
5 things to do to fix all the problems he listed. New updated lift bolts from later model 2zzges and clean lift screen Moroso oil pan with about a extra half qt of oil Apexi pfc to hit lift afew 100 rpms earlier to stay in lift between up shifts Learn not to money shift Use quality full sythetic oils and dont cheap out on lower octane gasoline = Bulletproof 2zzge
@@comediccommentator4663 hit it right on the head. Although I'd spring for a new oil pump, rev it about 500rpm higher with the pfc so you land at 6K or over. You lose a little bit of oomph lowering your lift point
Why? New cars are run by proprietary software. You can't really work on them yourself so you're relegated to paying insane dealership prices for what was once a simple fix. These companies have found new ways to lock out the DIY ways to save money because it's bad for their business.
The problem is Toyota cheaped out on the oil pump gear. It was sintered metal, so when it sucked up any air, the cavitation would chip away at the gear or even cause it to explode. This wouldn't happen with a solid metal gear, which was available in the aftermarket. The pan issue was because of how well the car handled from the factory (think ITR). Put some sticky tires on it, take an offramp at 80mph, and you'd probably have an issue with no oil at the pickup on most cars. Also, note that the 2001+ Celicas had revised shift gates, because drivers couldn't drive and misshifted (still didn't stop them...). And the 2002+ Celicas lowered the rev limiter from 8400 to 7800. Another attempt to reduce the chance of blowing the engine on a misshift, but all it resulted in is hurting power (8400 is required to stay in lift from 1-2). Aftermarket solutions existed, but the 2000 Celica was the purest form of the car. The version of the 2000+ Celica that should be avoided is the 2000-2002 GT. The 1ZZ engine from those years was well known for oil consumption issues. Same issue in the Corolla and MR2 Spyder (which also inhaled its own precats!).
I have never owned anything but a manual transmission. I've never miss a shift before I bought my Celly in 2000. I did it twice before they fixed it with upgraded shift gates. All fixed under warranty. Afterwards, no problems. I was going straight down into fourth, but second gear was engaging. So your slightly wrong blaming it on people that can't drive.
I have 2zzge 192hp in my Corolla T-Sport and it has done over 300tkm. Still works and pulls perfectly fine. Just proper and regular maintenance and it works just like any other good Toyota engine.
I have a Celica VVTi 💖 143 hp and I find that your video is true and therefore can be very useful. But ... there is no car and car brand without trouble. What about the prestigious Subaru engines that fail as easily as their transmissions? What about the latest turbines on BMWs? I've known several people whose turbine exploded and didn't even pull hard with their BMWs...
Swaggy Jay Had two Tacoma’s in a row that were both lemons. First (2012) had a bad transmission (could not shift directly from 1st to 2nd) and the second (2014) had a lousy v6 engine (piston slap). Both were bought brand new from the dealer. Both got the same support from the dealer (they tell me “they all do that.”). Finally bought a 2016 F-150 and it is a truly incredible truck. I would *NEVER* go back to Toyota trucks.
Tom Harding The ones I seen were under the year 2000. So I guess maybe the older models lasted longer. Sorry to hear about your experience. Anyways, the Ford F-150 trucks are truly amazing.
Bought my GTS new in 2000 now my son drives it. It has over 280k miles on it and runs like a top. The reason people went through engines is because of the close gates of the shifter and they would money shift it. I love how Scotty always blames the car when it's mostly owner neglect or abuse.
When I worked at Toyota, the problem came from shifting into 4th by accident instead of 6th resulting in the pistons hitting the valves...never knew about oil pump or pan problem. I thought Yamaha just did the head?
scotty is right about the 2000 2zz engine problems. but i wanna say by 2002 toyota fixed the problems. i have an 05 matrix with 2zz and it has held up no problem. any problems toyota has which is rare they tend to fix it within a year or 2.
Abdulellah Alharthi well evidently as he has only put five miles on it the last year and a half after looking at this video and an older one. He’s full of crap. That Celica doesn’t even run normal I bet
on a serious note, my mom owns one of these with about 200k on it. while the 2zz isn't bulletproof, if you use premium gas, take care of your routine maintenance, and maybe do the mods to prevent the oil problems, these cars are extremely economical and reliable and are great if you want to get into a sports car for under 3000 bucks
The only problem I’ve had with my almost 200,000 mile 2001 celica is the 20 year old clutch giving out. Other than that and replacing some original parts. I love my car and probably will never give it up!
Toyota/Yamaha joint ventures have delivered great results, from the original Toyota 2000GT, to my current dream car, the Lexus LFA.. And of course, everyone's favorite, the Legendary 2JZ..... But, the 2ZZ was apparently not one of their best efforts, it was unreliable, and it wasn't even very good performance either! The cam came on so late, even if you shifted at redline it fell off the lift powerband. At least on the US spec Celicas I drove.. An old friends Elise did the same.
I think 190hp out of 1.8L is good performance. What would you consider a good performance number from a 1.8L engine? Serious question, if there is something better in that displacement I'd like to know about it.
Me too but Scotty isn't the first person to warn about these engines. Just make sure you regularly change your oil and use the correct oil ... and keep your fingers crossed!!! Lol 😅😂🤣
@@SteveRogers461 The problems he describes are from the first ones sold in Japan which had higher rpm limits. They fixed this for the models sole internationally.
@@ColdVsIce Don't know where you're hearing that, the only major problem was the oil pump failure with the first bunch that were sold in Japan. Rarely hear of any engine issues with these, plenty over 200k miles on the clock.
I have a 2000 GTS with 300,000 Miles on it and still run like new with minimal cosmetic repairs. She’s been a good car for me even when I neglected her a for a while.
They did not put any baffles in the oil pan. That is a zippy engine and because they did not put baffles in the oil pan the oil washes away from the oil pump. It does this when you are revving the motor and really pushing it. It's my understanding that the same engine works just fine with the lotus platform because the oil pan has baffles. I might get myself one of those celica's one day. But I will change out the oil pan immediately. It's basically a poor man's front wheel drive lotus.
@@swankgodd3647 Remember that the Elise is crazy lightweight, and designed from the ground up as a sports car. Unlike the Celica with Corolla underpinnings.
Christian Fiore between the celica and the Elise were talking 500 pounds. At the most. Gut a celica and you have the same weight. Same motor. At the end of the day the Elise and the celica are the same.. it’s just a body kit😂 maybe it handles better sure; maybe it is more sturdy and built more streamline. But doesn’t change the fact it’s the same car
I had a friend who went out bought one of those Taurus SHO’s brand new. He finally sold it after putting three engines on it. Another friend that had a Ford contour, 1997 I believe, and he had the same problem. He would turn a corner sharply and blow the engine.
I owned one of these Celica's a 2001 190,was 7 years old when I bought it,in the 4 years I had it,it was faultless. Unless you count a replacement battery and one stop light bulb. Changed the oil and filters every 10k with genuine parts. I'm sorry I sold it,but I needed a bigger car. Would I recommend one? Absolutely!
That 2zz engine is not that bad. It's the oilpump which cannot hold up. Get an oilpump with a much higher capacity and the problem is SOLVED. The rest of this Celica is rather bulletproof. I would buy one for the right price!
I love most of Scotty's videos, but he ran out of ideas or something with this one. Even the GT-S engine is fine with a couple tweaks, and the one in the GT is basically bulletproof. Knew a few people who drive crazy and their GT-S engines lasted 270-300,000 miles each.
This 2zz Motor is actually badass. The engine isn’t bad or the problem ... it’s the oil pan assembly design according to your explanation. I love this motor and this gen CELICA. They look great lowered with wheels.
Toyota4Life The 1zz was the worst engine. Celica tuners have been searching out the 2zzge as a replacement. It just comes down to changing out the bad lift bolt and putting a baffled pan if doing a lot of cornering at high speed. GTS rule!
Exactly, I had a Matrix XRS with close to 250k miles on it and it never gave me a single problem. I don't understand why people have problems with the 2ZZ
@@distorteddominance5154 I agree. I currently still drive my '04 Matrix XRS and it's nearing 200K miles on the original engine. I don't drive like a teenager, though.
The problems explained in this video were with the models up to 2002, Toyota then revised the design and dropped the rpm limiter and switched the point at which lift kicks in. They also revised the engine oil delivery system meaning that there were no oil starving issues. Proof of this is how many celicas have survived until today. Mine for example is an 03 with 167k miles on it. Original engine and only minor maintenance over the 6 years I've owned it. I admit I don't use the cheapest fuel but that's normal for anyone who respects their cars. Celicas were and still are bulletproof cars.
I have a friend that's also a mechanic. Worked for Toyota and many other places (dealerships and independent shops). He also agrees that Toyotas are the best built cars. Especially for working on, as they make an effort to make everything accessible. From my time owning and working on my own Toyotas and other brands, I can easily agree.
I had a 2000 Celica GT-s, I bought it at 170k miles and drove it until just under 290k when the clutch went out and I decided to sell it. I never had a problem with the engine and I drove it hard, I contstantly revved it to 8k. I must've been really lucky.
Friend of mine got 2000 Celica 1.8vvt-i 140bhp, 6 speed manual.. what a great build little fast thing! He got it for 350€, needed front brake pads, 4 spark plugs, oil and filters! Everything else was stunning, clicking and working like Swiss watch! We drove that Celica through the whole europe during holidays and the following car for the trip (Opel Meriva 1.3cdti) (Italian jtd-M engine) had a alternator failure half the trip. We had to stop every 10miles and exchanging battery’s between the Celica and the Meriva. Day and night! The Toyota never broke down, simple 2 door small car but so well built!
I dunno, my 01 gts is at 156k miles and doesn't use a drop of oil between changes (7000) miles. It gets great mpg, like 34 on Hwy. I just don't plan on revving it over 5-6k rpm. Plus I always keep the oil level a tad over full. I use mid-range fuel so it's an extra few bucks per fill up. Omg, am I actually disagreeing with Scotty.....no.
@@letdalordbewithyou5665 Yeah mine eats a little oil but it's not a big enough issue pushing 225k miles and still running strong. Evap emissions system is throwing a code and I'm gonna be replacing the catalytic converter very soon but other than that it seems bulletproof.

Scotty Celica mileage basically hasn’t increase when he bought it. It’s hard to boast reliability of his celica based on his undriven car
It's perfectly reliable, you can rely on it to stay in one place
Most of the car brands he calls unreliable as easily found on Craigslist running find with 3 or 400k miles
@@anunknowndude Thanks for the tip. 👍
The problem with these 2zzge engines was insufficient oil capacity and oil pans with no baffling. Both could be solved with an aftermarket oil pan. These things also commonly get destroyed by miss shifting at high rpms. Otherwise they are pretty reliable as long as they are cared for.

@@comediccommentator4663 All the five things you listed, is why I would not buy one! :-)
@@mikeymike758 You wouldn't buy one because of not being able to money shift?
Scotty, did you ever think about buying a new car ? :)
Why? New cars are run by proprietary software. You can't really work on them yourself so you're relegated to paying insane dealership prices for what was once a simple fix. These companies have found new ways to lock out the DIY ways to save money because it's bad for their business.
I’ve been running my 02 GTS as a daily driver for 17 years and have put very little into it and it still runs fine.
I had 2000 Celica GTS for 8 years, it was my daily driver and never had any issue except normal maintenance. Sold it with 250k on it.
Mines got 230k

They did not put any baffles in the oil pan. That is a zippy engine and because they did not put baffles in the oil pan the oil washes away from the oil pump. It does this when you are revving the motor and really pushing it. It's my understanding that the same engine works just fine with the lotus platform because the oil pan has baffles.
