  • Antony Beevor discusses his book, "The Battle of Arnhem", at Politics and Prose.
Operation Market Garden was a bold and risky move by the Allies to end the Second World War by capturing the bridges leading to the lower Rhine. Launched in mid-September 1944, the operation deployed the legendary American 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions and the British 1st Airborne Division, some of the best combatants in the world. Yet the effort failed, and while it ultimately proved to be "The Last German Victory," it also meant heavy reprisals for the Dutch and many more months of fighting. In this masterful recreation and analysis of the struggle, Beevor, the author of prize-winning histories including D-Day and The Fall of Berlin 1945, and winner of the 2014 Pritzker Military Museum & Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing, gives us not just the story of one battle, but a probing study of war itself.
