Wow, what a complex system, they went through the extra effort of making six intake valves but then tied them all together to a shaft so they can't be individually controlled. All those contact points are bound to fail as the vehicle ages.
What I found confusing about fuel trim is the way oxygen sensors measure oxygen, not fuel. So, an electrical misfire appears lean because although there is lots of fuel going through, that fuel is not burned, so the oxygen is not consumed. Then the PCM inappropriately reacts by adding even more fuel. As much as it feels intuitive to think oxygen sensors measure the ratio of fuel to air, I get tripped up when the fuel isn't consumed.

Question:. What harm would it be to leave it? It's a 10 year old Hyundai... What harm would it do?

well, i could think of 2 things. 1, your fuel economy drops because of engine compensating with more fuel. And 2, if you live in a state that requires an emission test (aka smog test), then your car would fail, preventing you from renewing your registration.

Good explanation...the ECM is adding > 10% LT fuel to maintain the ST within the 10% range. My Corolla manifold leak shows 30% LT but the ST is between -4% and 8%. The code is set with the LT data. Finding the leak without a smoke machine is the hard part...

I have a 2006 ford explorer 4.6L v8. It has 76k miles on it, so not a lot for the age. I am the original owner and we serviced regularly throughout the life of vehicle. Last year we had a cat issue and had to replace the cat, while doing that i replaced the 4 o2 sensors. I replaced with a walker cat and the walker o2 sensors for front/rear. All good for over a year. The past few months i am getting a p2195 code, O2 Sensor Signal Biased/Stuck Lean Bank 1 sensor 1. Took to the mechanic first time they cleaned the MAF sensor said it was very dirty. a few weeks later (we don't drive a lot), code came back. This time they did more troubleshooting and it seems what is triggering it is the STFT B1S1 momentarily spikes to 40-50%, but only for a moment, but i guess long enough to trigger check engine. They found an article for a PCM update and did that. Driving the car for 150 miles, only saw a pending code (not a full stored code) but same p2195. both pending was around STFT 30-40%, but after 10 miles or so went away. I also put in a can of Techron fuel cleaner. While monitoring it i do seem to get the STFT every now again, it seems like it is always when the car is in the garage overnight, then in the morning it will show the STFT when i turn the car on and within the first 2 minutes. it won't happen every time, but when it does it is always in the morning after first turning the car on and within a few minutes i will see the STFT spke to 30-40 or 50 but only for a few seconds then goes back to normal. This is while watching the live data from my monitor tool. Any thoughts? Car drives perfectly, no complaints, no loss of power, since using the techron and the pcm update they did it is even better, but i hate seeing that pending code popup every now and again and possibly the full check engine light. mechanic said they tested the o2 sensors, and all looks normal from them and from what i can tell on the live data. I did read some people had issues with 'walker o2' sensors. just curious if any other people's thoughts. you think replacing fuel injectors or replacing teh o2 with the higher end motocraft? mechanics did do a vacuum test, no leaks, said maf and o2 sensors were operating fine.

The problem is first of all I don't have a smoke machine! I'm not a professional mechanic I watch these to be able to work on my own cars. I could use a propane tank I guess. I also don't have that type of scanner he has! I have a Innova OBDl and OBDII scanner.

i have one in the shop same engine it was the hose from the T-Body to Mass air flow had a split only time it would give problems was idling in gear neutral would go away but sitting at a red light the movement of the engine opened up the split in the hose.

You can remount that shaft and put a seal over the whole thing over the whole Shaft or something put a little bearing or sleep in there a bushing it's a bad design there's enough not enough to handle the torque of the pull pivot

Wow.. Nice info! This is exactly the problem I am facing right now. My 07 ford taurus doing the same, for bank 1 STFT stays between +/-3%, but LTFT stays constant at about -12% at Idle. Bank 2 is lean at idle with +12% total fuel trim. When I increase RPM to 2500, STFT jumps between +/-6% and LTFT stays constant at -19%. Bank 2 improves at 2500 RPM with about +6% total fuel trim. OBD says cylinder 1,2, and 6 misfire. I have tested injectors, replaced the leaking injector already. What would be reasons for having constant -12% LTFT at bank 1? Thank you.

I did screw it tight yesterday night and today there were no trouble codes stored after driving. I was getting P0170 P0174 quite oftenly in recent period..

Last week I moved propane bottle fast on 2000 regal 3800 engine and could not find leak(LTFT high only at Idle, so I followed your video Vacuum test 01 released on Nov 15. 2011 and used vacuum gauge. The reading was steady at 20.5 inHg which excellent. Is smoker test is better than vacuum gauge. I do not have smoker so used vacuum gauge.

    • @realfixesrealfast

both tests are good but they are also dependent on being done well. The vacuum test is probably the most convincing because the engine is basically an air pump

We've had that same 07 2.7 and just handed it down to our daughter. I was wondering what the intake would cost and just for the heck of it I tried to look for an upper intake online and I could not find one anywhere. Knock on wood we never need one.
