I agree as it has been suggested that the keystones had better articulation and depth but I still preferred the smooth warmth of the Tex-Mex. thanks for the demo.
As I'm about to embark on my own partscaster build, I've been listening to countless pickups. I gotta say, I hadn't really considered the Tex Mex set, but they sound incredible to me. Btw great review, really helpful.
Late to the party, but I just ordered a set of Tex-Mex to replace my Indonesian Squire CV 50's Telecaster pickups. The neck pickup went out. After looking at 4th gen noiseless, 64 classics, Quarter pounders, EMT, Texas Specials, Donahue bridge and Twang King neck, (This combo drew me in! I almost went with this combo). I decided on the Tex-Mex. For the money and going into a Squire, they seem hard to beat. I'm gonna try with stock electronics. I may then change out to a four way switch, new pots and jack. I'm a fan of the grit and growl a Telecaster can have. Its distinctly different from a Les or Strat. The simplicity of a Tele is just so alluring. So many players have gotten so many different great hits, with different sounds from this simple bare bones set up. How can you not want a piece of that? From Waylon Jennings outlaw country to Jimmy Page's down and dirty rock'n!
The Tex Mex sound a bit warmer, and I didn't think they would sound that good. I was planning on changing my cv pickups for a seymour duncan but these texmex are amazing. Thank you for the work you put in. You helped me a lot

It's funny. When I go back and read this, the Tex Mex are like $80 new. It's not a bad price for Fender pickups. My Telecaster cost $350 new. I ended up finding a bridge Tex Mex strat pickup on Reverb for $30, so I'm good now. Still love the sound here.
It's funny, I have two Strats with Tex-Mex pickups. I'm used to them and I love them. I'm here because I want to do a Tele partscaster and figured a Tex-Mex set would be my default pick. Picked up a mystery set of Telecaster pickups for $20 and then turned out to be a Tex Mex set. Wanted to hear them before I put them in. Thanks for this video.
Excellent demo Nathan, thanks man! Literally bought the TexMex p-ups 3/4 through your vid. Agree with many other replies. Both sound really great, but I prefer the TexMex tone - unbelievable value. Cheers!
Interesting comparison. If I was building this tele to have more of an authentic tele tone I would for sure go with the Keystones. I think many comments are judging mainly due to added volume of tex mex. It tricks us all! Louder sounds better lol. I had a spare tex mex tele bridge pickup laying around so I modded it with a baseplate. Many people claim it makes a huge difference. My personal experience the difference is minimal. It’s there, but minimal. It’s still fun to point at one of my tele’s and say I have a “modded” Tex-mex in the bridge. Haha
•allstopblue • true statement about the volume. 👍🏻 And cool story! Thought about trying a baseplate on my Strat bridge, but I'm afraid I'd screw it up! 😜
Very useful comparison. Thank you! Go figure -- I like the Tex Mex bridge pickup, which seems to retain more high-end "snap," better, and for the neck I like the additional top end clarity I'm hearing on the Keystone lol
I installed the tex mex pups in an old squier a few years ago. I did a few recordings with it but then tired of the guitar itself and stored it away.. Recently I heard the tracks and immediately tried to figure out what the hell guitar I used because it sounded so good. Once I remembered it was the tex mex tele, I was blown away because I disliked the guitar so much. I will be installing them in my next tele build
Both sound great TBH. I think the Tex Mex T PUPs are a little warmer than the Keystones, and not in a bad way. I think the Keystones would be an excellent choice for a T guitar with a rosewood fingerboard. Great demonstration, thanks for posting.
I liked the Keystones better on all the clean sound clips. Nice belltone, and top end without being to bright. I also liked the keystone bridge dirty, everything just sounded smooth, and even across all the strings, that said, I liked all the other dirt positions with the Tex Mex. If I was playing Jazz, traditional country, and country rock, I’d probably go with the Keystones. If I was doing more Blues, Southern Rock, Rock, alternative Rock, or punk, I’d have to go with the edgier Tex Mex pups.
Not sure Fender Road Worn are Nitro sprayed over poly like the American Vintage. In fact, numerous sources say they are the only non-CS fenders that are all Nitro.
There are different versions of the road worn Tele. This one that I have (if you were to buy a brand new one) has a nitro finished body but a “urethane” finished neck. That’s what the specs say! It’s a little deceiving.
I am quite surprised that the Tex Mex held up so well. They had a better bite on the clean tones for sure but the BL were smoother in the dirty tones. Ya just need 2 Tele's here!
Thanks for uploading: Keystones sound more mid-rangy and compressed (in the good sense) to me. More depth and articulation. Musikraft do a terrific job on the necks. I have two: a '59 profile round and chunky .87 to .97 on a Thinline and a D fat profile on a regular Tele. Both are beautifully resonating ang giving sustain like forever...! Cheers !
I prefer the Tex Mex bridge but the Keystone Neck. The keystone pickups are definitely less mid focused, which works in the neck, but makes the bridge lack some slam and body.
Being a reformed pickup snob I thought the Keystones would wipe the floor with the Tex Mex pickups. I was wrong, I liked the Tex Mex better on every test. Less than $100.00 well spent!
What are your thoughts on the pickups? I have Keystones in my Tele right now but after hearing this, I might give the Tex Mex a try. They have a grit and attitude that I like.
Rydera81 I'm kind of partial to a traditional Tele sound, & I think the Keystones are better at that. However, the Tex-Mex are great for certain applications. For me, I want my Tele to sound like a Tele, my Strat to sound like a Strat, etc. But some people want their guitar to be really versatile. It's all about what your going for. Pickups are always a hard thing. 😐
@@chrispaskell8344 The Tx pups aren't particularly expensive. It's a bit of a hassle removing the strings completely to get the bridge off on a tele, doing pick-up work.
Tex mex is far superior. I’m listening through pro audio t5. Just so you know I can hear highs, lows and mids. I’m not biased in anyway and not affiliated with either manufacturer.
I know I'm a little late on this clip, I almost bought the Keystones but ended up scoring a great deal on a used set of Seymour Duncans. VIntage for the Neck and Vintage 54 for the bridge. Getting them next week and will drop them in right away and see how that goes, I also too wanted more of True Tele sound. Another Fender Tele pick that is work looking is the Vintage 64, pretty close actually to the Keysotne ( which are great ). Not a fan of any Tex Mex Mes style pickups, I prefer to start out clean and play through a Vox Amp to get a little grit with my Tele and of course various overdrives when needed. Your guitar turned out great, congrats !
I hated my Tex Mex pickups on my Strat, but on Telecasters, they deliver what I the sound I am looking for (for now). But I wish I can get a little more P90ish on the bridge.
I like the Tex-Mex, but the Keystones have that little something extra. I have the neo Microcoils, and the clean tones have that same bell-like quality, only more so. Stellar...
I have a pair of Keystones on the shelf... dunno, I actually like your Tex Mex better in this video. My Tele is a Wolf brand though with a lot of dark wood - walnut, ebony, maple neck thru so I might appreciate the brighter nature of the Keystones. Guess I’ll have to just try ‘em. Thanks
Both sound good but I think the Tex mex win out! And another great player to listen to who uses them is Guthrie trapp. Check him out. Tone King and sublime player

Keystones for recording; TMs for gigging.
The Keystone for more modern clean tone, maybe also for jazz or funk.
I think in the end it's the mids on the keystones that give them a more evenly rounded sound as opposed to the scooped sound of the tex mex.
