My bios looked really different, because my PC is newer, but with a little bit of looking around and a few guesses, I managed to get it to boot from the USB. I then ran through your follow-up tutorial to run from internal SSD. So now I have a small PC I can take to my friend's house for some plug-and-play Goldeneye action

Bought an old Dell Optiplex 790 SFF (i7 2600, 8gb RAM, and an AMD Radeon R5 240 aftermarket video card) from eBay and did the Batocera trick that you showed on here. Works great with even PS2 and GameCube! Loving playing the retro games again! Thank you so much for this tutorial, ETA!

I just want to say first that I found this tutorial to be absolutely fantastic. It really got me excited and reignited my interest in retrogaming. It gave me the confidence to put down some money and spend a week tinkering getting my own machine to work and I would never have had the confidence without this video. You're doing great work for the retro community man.
That said, my own experience with building a retro machine on a budget left me a little bit out in the cold. Entirely my fault. I tend to get excited and leap before I look. And that definitely happened here.
Again, not knocking ETA Prime, the dudes only one man and only has so much time to discuss all the possible hardware permutations that can come up when building a rig out of old parts. On top of that, emulation is a not fixed quantity like playing the games on old consoles would. So there's two sets of variables at play.
Personally, I can attest that machines like this will do a great job emulating plenty of fantastic Gamecube and Dreamcast titles. Probably around 90% will run perfectly fine, as well as almost anything from previous generations. And for most people that will be more than good enough.
For instance. For me, a similar setup ran Pikmin, Mario Sunshine, Beyond Good and Evil, Chibi Robo, and Prince of Persia almost perfectly. Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast was also fully playable.
Unfortunately, I had my heart really set on a few titles that dolphin still needs a lot of processing power to render playable. In particular Rogue Squadron II and MGS Twin Snakes. Virtually unplayable even at standard definition on the GT 1030. I'm sure there are other games as well that fit on that list. You might have your heart set on some of these tougher titles. So plan accordingly. A machine that can handle those games might not be quite as cheap but it will save you grief in the long run to invest wisely.

Thanks for taking the time out to write this piece. Gutted for Rogue Squadron 2 and MGS, have you managed to get it running yet? I'm going to start building my machine up hopefully this weekend.

@@HerecomestheCalavera Well, after you get rid of all the bloat absolutely nothing. However, when I used it about half the packages I wanted to install required adding ppa's. I got tired of adding those and deleting them when I got rid of those packages. It's the same reason I rarely use Ubuntu based distros now. While it has definitely gotten better since I used it last, on my 1 Ubuntu box I haven't had to add a single ppa, there's still a bad taste in my mouth from it. With arch based distros you never have to add repositories since you have access to the Arch User Repository (AUR) which has pretty much all of the software that isn't in the main repositories. Just like ppa's you have to watch out for malware. Also there have been a couple of privacy concerns with Ubuntu over the years. That and it just didn't feel like it fit me. In the end whether or not it is a good or bad distribution is up to the individual user.

If you do not have TCP/IP networking at home, you can add games directly from any external source drive by pressing F1 on your keyboard, then you can use your mouse pointing device to navigate to your drive folders and files where the roms that you would like to copy are stored, and then copy/paste it to your batocera USB roms directory.

My small form factor pc works with 64bit which all together just works better. The other stuff is instead of Batocera I used another one called Recalbox, which is a works like a charm.
I bet Xorhub website is down because of a trademark infringement or such. All other forums they recommend to use Recalbox, because it has low requirements and do everything which says on the tin.

There is one of these for £40 delivered or £20 collected 55 miles from me. Its very tempting. I have 8gb of ddr3, a gtx 460 and and an r9 270x gathering dust at the mo which would give this a boost if the gpu fits inside the machine but looks great as it is for about the same price as a pi and capable of some light pc gaming. A great starter pc for my little boy once he is old enough and a cheap and convenient way to show him the evolution of video games. The one I am considering has an e7400 cpu.
