Yes!!! It’s the only 4-stringed instrument I own and I’ve been dying to mod it within an inch of its life. Being a guitar player myself, I’m not sure what upgrades I should do on my bass.

Pups? Maybe a better bridge and shield the electronics, other than that I can’t think of much else that would be needed for bass. I’d basically go for anything that would improve tone and sustain to start, and then maybe put on a hip shot if you drop d a lot. Players styles vary of course, but that should be a good base level upgrade.
We modded an EB-0
w PTB (2-way passive tone circuit), Babicz bridge, and Dominger 11-pole single coil instead of the mediocre bridge pickup you’ll find in the EB-3. Added an onboard fuzz circuit.
Absolutely fantastic instrument once modded.

Welcome back, Sharpen My Axe! The main reason I watch this type of video is to learn more about how to maintain and adjust my guitars. I've never had much money to throw at guitars and am always looking to save. The DIY route is best for many and probably most players, because it saves the money and TEACHES you things, too. As you learn more about setting up and maintaining your axes, you lose fear and gain control. This gives the player at least a couple of reasons to learn how to do this stuff; it pays off huge!

I know some of the reasons you set Sharpen My Axe aside, but watching all of those videos inspired me to take up setups, modifications and repair to my own guitars. Bought some basic Stew Mac, Skyscraper and Music Nomad tools to cover most of my projects. Now, my guitars are all setup exactly how I like them and swapping pickups or polishing frets is something I find a lot of joy in being able to do well all by myself. Built 4 Partscasters and modified a couple of my other instruments to where I love them and play more. Really rewarding to be able to do it yourself. Hope to see more of these types of videos because of how well you teach and explain. 🤘🫡

As a woodworker I can vouch for Titebond, that stuff will never come apart, the wood will shred around it first. Definitely wipe it while it's wet or it will be much harder to remove without damaging the finish, and they also have waterproof versions, not that it should be needed for a guitar I can't imagine sweat would impact this. I have the same exact vintage Korean Epiphone I bought new after college in '92, though mine is the custom looking model. It's still a really great playing guitar.

As a beginner, that's where I get the most benefit from the show. I watch the live shows to learn but most of the topics are over my head musically speaking. Peace, DD
I bought an Expensive LP Standard EPI a couple of yrs ago, after a few months of playing it, i opened the case and the headstock fell off. It was almost a clean break right at the nut, with not much angle. I dont ever recall dropping the case or knocking the guitar. Lucky to find a good tech here in Oz $150 au. Has played great since being repaired. We need more guys like you over here Phillip..👍

This is exactly what happened to my Ovation Deacon 12 string. It got knocked over and it cracked just like this along the fretboard. I took it to a luthier thinking it probably couldn't be fixed since it's a 12 string but he did and I can't even see the crack . I asked him how in the world he fixed it and this was the process he described. It's been about 5 years and it still plays like new. I love learning how to do things like and I appreciate you showing us how !

Is that a 96 sparkle top custom shop stamp in the middle of the headstock dose the rod cover say Gibson instead of Epiphone because if it is you have a special guitar congratulations 🎉🎸🥂

I had a red sparkle limited edition Epiphone Les Paul like the one you have in the video , but mine had a Bigsby type tremolo on it . I never really bonded with the sparkle finish and my brother in law has owned it since around 1998 , he still plays it often .

Great video Phil, I quit on Gibson Les Paul’s , 10 years ago I tried a PRS single Cut , and the rest is history, it’s far superior to me personally , Tone , Feel , Build quality looks.

Great video, and great advice as always! I used to be really hesitant about attempting to fix my own guitars when I was younger; I thought guitars were held together with magic. But once I got my head around how it’s just some pieces of wood with frets and some electrics attached to it I realised I could probably fix anything myself! Videos like this are what gave me the confidence to have a go at most repairs myself!
Love sharpen my axe. I heard titebond 2 and 3 aren't good for guitar repairs because they are waterproof, so they make future repairs difficult. I've never used any titebond stuff myself though
I like original the best, but I like 2 when doing anything that gets lots of hands or sweaty hands on it.
Old carpenter here. Titebond 1 dries kinda hard. Good for basic repairs of wood that wont move much. Titebond 2 awesome and kinda more flexible. Perfect for strong cabinet joints, guitar necks, nuts, wood veneer. Fast setup time, so dont let it dry much before cleaning it up. Titebond 3 is an exterior weatherproof kind of glue. Really made to be outdoors and strong as well. To unglue things we use a hair dryer or heat gun. So think about that for a minute. 🤣

i cracked my epiphone super dot neck like that trying to remove the nut as a teenager, since I was stringing it lefty but a tech fixed it up .... 15 years later lol

Dude that's exactly the same way I fix them,pocket knife and all,I even have the same syringes as well.i buy every guitar I can find that's broke like that and I fix them and I think it helps the tone of the guitar.cheers brother

Nice work! Your shop has really taken that next step. Looks like you could do just about any luthier type work in there. And you made the most important facts well know right up front. Easy on the glue, easy on the polishing, sanding, heat, etc. That "sharpening" can lead to more damage if not done carefully.

A lot of players look down on the neck scarf joints on Epiphone necks but they are supposed to be stronger than a one piece neck. I guess the fact that the neck did not break and only the fret board lifted a little proves this to some extent. My 1998 Epiphone Les Paul standard has never missed a beat and I've played the life out of it. It's still my favourite Les Paul even over my 2010 Gibson Slash signature and the Slash Les Paul is a mighty fine guitar.

So awesome. I had an Epi T-Bird bass crack the same way. This axe looks like it could use a fret level/crown and new nut, too.
How can you see uneven frets? 🤡🤡🤡
@@Kommander_Rahnn They're not uneven, they're pitted from string pressure. Phil said as much later in the video (and I apparently jumped the gun with my comments).
If you change the heights of the frets, you should always re-cut the nut. In this case, the original probably wasn't cut properly to begin with. So it's a good opportunity to replace it with a better material and carve it properly.

Never woulda thought to scrape the neck, my first thought (not best one) would've been complete re-finish if it were my own, down to bare (or as close as damnit) wood then use a nice oil finish for super slick fun :)

Agree with all here... sharpen my axe series is awesome. Not many can afford or justify custom shop LPs/strats or private stock PRSs. Getting a good guitar and upgrading to its peak performance is the dream. Love this channel as this could be a dull topic, but i am rivetted to Philip's approach and results.....

You know I have a Jackson dk3 that has a 12in to 16in compound radius with a Floyd Rose. I'd love to see a video of you shimming some floyd saddles to create a flatter radius.

How about using drill bit as thick as the needle and drill in between the fingerboard and neck from the nut pocket? Inject glue into the hole so it goes all the way to end of crack.
