This guy's music, for me, is always at once comforting and familiar while being a surprising suckerpunch. Incomparable in terms of his varied narrators and honesty about the human condition. This song is cripplingly sad.
Randy, if you ever stop by to read our ramblings on your song writing, please accept my humble thank you. You meander a journey that is so relatable, with a lyric transcendental of a past experience familiar to us all. How is that possible? A friend we've never met, yet our best friend we can't do without. Cheers bud.
Randy is one of those writers like an author of books. Not driven by generating the next hit, his drug is finding meaning and stories with unique perspectives, just like the great authors. That’s one of the reasons he can still create brilliant works even in his seventies - his mind and heart are both in the right place.
Even if I knew which way the wind was blowing Even if I knew this road would lead me home Even if I knew for once where I was going I'm lost out here without you Rocking the baby by that window there Planting tomatoes in the yard Naked by the mirror putting up your hair Baby, it's hard When the kids came to see you for the last time I told them not to bring the children The husbands, or the wife I said, "Just the blood this time. Just the blood." They asked to be alone with you So I left them alone, but I didn't go far They said, "Has he been drinking again? He stumbled at the door He can't take care of himself, Mama We can't do this anymore." You said, "Hush up, children Let me breathe I've been listening to you all your life Are they hungry, are they sick? What is it they need? Now it's your turn to listen to me "I was young when we met And afraid of the world Now it's he who's afraid And I'm leaving "Make sure he sleeps in his bed at night Don't let him sleep in that chair If he holds out his hand to you, hold it tight If that makes you uncomfortable Or if it embarrasses you I don't care." Even if I knew which way the wind was blowing Even if I knew this road would lead me home Even if I knew for once where I was going I'm lost out here Baby, I'm lost out here I'm lost out here without you
What the hell? This guy is an absolute genius. This has to be one of the saddest songs ever written. The details put you right there. “ Make sure he sleeps in his bed at night…” Come on.

That opening orchestral section gets me every time.
The main melody and chords are mesmerizing. It's great to know Randy is still out there writing songs as well as he did when he was 20
Brings a tear every time. So beautiful.

Who else could write these lyrics but Randy? Still writing great songs in his 70's Bless your heart Mr Newman.
Yeah
His irony lifts and his heart deepens, with the passing years
- not a bad way to turn out.
I'm just glad he shares these changes with us all.

That last part where he brings the chords in and the "I'm lost out here. Baby I'm loost out here.". God it's beautiful
This intro... my God, this intro!!!
👑💜
Even if I knew which way the wind was blowing
Even if I knew this road would lead me home
Even if I knew for once where I was going
I'm lost out here without you
Rocking the baby by that window there
Planting tomatoes in the yard
Naked by the mirror putting up your hair
Baby, it's hard
When the kids came to see you for the last time
I told them not to bring the children
The husbands, or the wife
I said, "Just the blood this time. Just the blood."
They asked to be alone with you
So I left them alone, but I didn't go far
They said, "Has he been drinking again?
He stumbled at the door
He can't take care of himself, Mama
We can't do this anymore."
You said, "Hush up, children
Let me breathe
I've been listening to you all your life
Are they hungry, are they sick?
What is it they need?
Now it's your turn to listen to me
"I was young when we met
And afraid of the world
Now it's he who's afraid
And I'm leaving
"Make sure he sleeps in his bed at night
Don't let him sleep in that chair
If he holds out his hand to you, hold it tight
If that makes you uncomfortable
Or if it embarrasses you
I don't care."
Even if I knew which way the wind was blowing
Even if I knew this road would lead me home
Even if I knew for once where I was going
I'm lost out here
Baby, I'm lost out here
I'm lost out here without you
Arguably the best American songwriter of the last fifty years.
Or maybe there's no argument about it at all?
There could be better delivery.
Ferg, no argument here. But let's add Randy to the same small group as Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits...

Are we Forgetting Paul Simon

Master songwriter!!!
this man is simply a genius heart!
So beautiful .... Randy xxx
Been living with this guy and his songs/universe since I heard Good old boys in a record store in the early seventies. Noone like him! #respectandlove
Randy keeps writing great songs. I wish I could buy the sheet music or the book of music for this album
I mean .. listen to that stringwriting.. what singer- songwriter does that today? (Or has ever done that?)
So beautiful!
Check out Harry Connick Jr.'s "Let Me Love Tonight." Not the same kind of song as this, but gorgeous string writing.
will do!
yes, beautiful Strings and then the piano work at his entrance and through the rest just in support of a such a great lyric
Aaron Copeland, one of the greatest American composers, check him out. Big influence
He's really something. Whew! Am I glad he was born.
I love the intro
One of his finest songs. My god.
I am never not amazed.

Hahaha…
It’s a bit dark for Toy Story…
“Just the blood this time”
Like Toy Story.
Typically Randy
opening tune seems like "georgia on my mind" rip off.
I’m lost out here without you :/
