Ich möchte diesen Tisch nicht, aber es ist faszinierend die Arbeitsschritte zu zuschauen und die Maserierung des Holzes ist toll!

James Krenov would turn over in his grave! My major complaint about this video is that it is run at twice the normal speed, giving the impression that all this work is easy and one should not pay a lot for it. The best part of it all was the patience the builder demonstrated in milling down the pieces. The joinery is terrible and the use of metal staples or brads to hold the thing together while the glue dries is outrageous. Advice to the budding craftsman? Read a couple of James Krenov's books.😊

I'm sure that's why there is a ridiculous number of dowels -- it's not just decorative, but makes those joints strong enough, gap-filled as they are.

If I had that finish on my hardware I’d be pissed. Spray, then finish. Cool design though. Nicely done, except the spray.

🌲🍀🐾⚒📐🔨I've seen these portable tables before. Nice tables to bring along while camping🏕 (needs a vehicle🚘 to carry) & fishing🎣. This one has quite beautiful wood grain. Look's a bit heavy, but it's that much more "rigid" (stronger) too🔨📐⚒🐾🍀🌲.

Screws in at angles, it's why we drive hinge screws generally after pre-drilling the hole.

How did you get away with using the slabs immediately after taking them off the log? I would normally expect the kiln to be the next step, followed by a couple years seasoning. Even then, I would expect the crotch wood to be full of internal stress and deform when it is cut through; though that might depend on the species (my experience is with mahogany). What is the moisture content of the wood when you started the table?

I doubt those hinges are strong enough to support the stress. You need more support or it will at bow in the middle... or worse!

i couldn't watch that fully, I just skipped thru and cringed at every point, my biggest cringe was the using Pozi 2 screws with a Philips 2 bit and listening to the death rattle of the Phillips bit getting completely FUBAR along with the heads of the screws.

Bonjour, j’aime beaucoup vos vidéos, elles sont très jolies et très instructives, pourriez-vous me dire pourquoi vous mettez des morceaux de benenier que vous retirez ensuite ?
Merci pour votre travail, très bonne journée.

What is "benenier"? I can't translate that word. The video creator probably doesn't know what you are asking, as well.

Almost perfect step by step work process but one thing i npticed the craftsman forgot forgot to to apply glue to the rest of the hole ! My.grade for the entire video is 8!

    • @JohnDlugosz
      @JohnDlugosz 11 днів тому

Yea, and it will not stay flat as it will want to open until the opposite sides touch, while there should be a couple millimeters between them.
I've seen folding tables that use a *lag bolt* that holds it while unfolded. The hinges don't have to carry those forces.

This video could use a lot of summary editing. Cut out the boring parts! Rather than watching every minute of the sawing of the log, skim through it. When you do something 4 times, just show full detail the first time and skip over the repeats. I skipped over most of the dowel work -- I got the idea quickly.

    • @JohnDlugosz

I feel the same way: the miter joints should have been planed flat and fitted nicely. The top _could_ join to the sides without any gaps. That's why he has such a large number of dowels: these hold the joints together, strong. Or they should if the glue coated the dowel! Just dropping glue into each hole I think it must just fall though.
Or, could have used an adhesive that's good at filling gaps, like certain kinds of construction adhesive.
But, having learned the same as you, I did some experiments and found that a lap joint with glued surfaces in all three directions, crudely made with a saw and not planed, then dried without proper clamping pressure, was still strong enough that the failure was twisting the wood apart, not the glue line. Makes me wonder if the advise and dire warnings were derived from use of hide glue and original PVA (white) glue, and modern modified PVA (yellow woodworker's glue) might be far better.
Glue certainly needs to be spread though! Just because there was some squeeze out in one end doesn't mean that there isn't dry areas in the joint.
