Funny thing: every time I would ask Latino players why they didn't play independence more often. They said we don't want to have to work too hard to have fun. Syncopation is the foremost book I have ever had any of my students learn.
The stuff against the clave in context is mind blowing. But I'm surprised that his free styling over the swing/broken swing doesn't feature more double strokes on the kick, especially when he's resting with his hi hat foot. He's a deep guy for sure.
That’s a tough crowd, look like bums. He was Laying down some massive skills and the people didn’t even flinch Antonio was surprised they didn’t even react so he kept stepping it up a notch. Kudos to Antonio Sanchez
It's an educational clinic not a concert, I like to hoop and holler but that doesn't seem appropriate in this context. Maybe if he was playing an open drum solo
Is there some scrumble on 11:38 or is it just my impression? He changes the time of the clave instead the bass drum part. By the way, Antonio is my hero. He's a master, please.
Nah man, he got it perfect. xD I tapped it out between a hand and a foot while it was on mute, and it made contact at the right time every time. >.< God knows how he does it. I only recently found out about him, and he's phenomenal!
+Brett Ransegnola probably heel down, no real need to play heel up in jazz. And for the samba hes probably also playing heel down, depends how fast and how strong.
He is one of those few who remind you the drums is an instrument, not something you bang on just to keep time.
InstaBlaster...
This guy is a bag of knowledge. I learned more in this vid then I have in the last ten years.
That's awesome joey. This is a fantastic lesson 🙏
Jeez
Totally agree
thank you sir for the totally free and invaluable lesson.
what a precious treasure this guy is ...
Just how amazing in Sanchez?!! Can't believe they all stood respectfully silent during this recording! Not a single clap of enthusiasm!!!
+Rafik Mankarios they were mesmerized by his lesson
Rafik Mankarios boaring crowd!
They were probably told not to clap or make any noise since it's an instructional video. Pretty common.
They couldve told them to remain motionless and in silent. Tv producers are pretty strict and rightfully so.
he is the drummer for the entire movie The Birdman. Quite tasty playing.
he is not the drummer only, he's the composer.
yes was totally ripped off (for the Oscar) by the Academy for that score, they are sickeningly political.
Nate Smith is also in the movie
He’s quite chubby.

We're very lucky to have this fantastic lesson available for free on youtube. Pretty sure it's an excerpt from a DVD you would have to pay for.
Great lesson! Informative! Antonio Sanchez clearly has some serious independence! Amazing!
Thanks Maestro Antonio, for proving again the possibilities of the drumset .

Syncopation boosted my creativity and really helped my jazz independence. Great book, endless possibilities.
Antonio es uno de los mejores bateristas del mundo. Yo le ví en directo en Madrid con su grupo Migration y fue una auténtica pasada.

Magnífico bateria y profesor. Un gusto oirlo explicarse
Dat ride tho :o
Do you know which one it is? Zildjan K, but any idea which series?
If I knew it i would have bought this four times already : (
22" Left side Ride would be my guess because of the hammering and the sizzles, the size is discontinued, however
Thelordofducks nothing compares to Zildjian Kerope cymbals!
Simply amazing. There is not much else I can say.
What a fantastic player Antonio is! Very interesting stick technique while playing the ride...
Look into Elvin Jones for this.
No se si transmite mejor con la batería o hablando. Vaya máquina
Excellent lesson of this amazing drummer! Thanks for posting!
I love this guy.

Maybe the show producers told them not to make any noise. They do look restricted. Perhaps suppressed. Imo

This is an absolutely fantastic video! :)
Antonio Sanchez is an amazing drummer!

Excellent lesson: had to quit cause I got so motivated to go play, but will be back to finish it. Great stuff!!!
Wow i wish i had found this guy years ago.
GREAT ANTONIO!
Check out Antonio's playing on the tracks 'Etude' and 'Float' with Avishai Cohen's International Vamp Band.
Saw them live in 2002 Summer-- GODLIKE!!!!
Thanks for the rec. I'm 2 minutes into "Etude" and I'm ready to throw my drums on a bonfire and take up knitting.

Zildjian 22K Left Side Ride with 2 or 3 rivets (originally 3) This 22 is clearly on the thinner side of things.

nice question there Justine Guy Bardenhost
Is he playing heel up or down in the bass drum? How do you think he does fast samba ostinatos in the bass drum?
+Brett Ransegnola probably heel down, no real need to play heel up in jazz. And for the samba hes probably also playing heel down, depends how fast and how strong.
