    Hey what’s up bro, I’m from New York City, and I’m just getting in to finches, I just bought 11 of them last week, my question is would they survive in my house basement, it’s finished basement but there is no heat installed yet, I have 5 Gouldian finches , and 5 society finches and 1 shaft tail, I orderd the breeding cage for them, I need your help , so they won’t die would they ? I just subscribed you. So I can ask for help since we both in cold area.

    • @lowkeelukes
      @lowkeelukes Рік тому

      Hi, in my experience the Gouldians will need atleast 19 degrees to be happy. A small space heater may be enough or a heatlamp over a perch. The society finches will be fine but may still need to acclimate and would benefit from a heat lamp.

      Yes, red lights allow birds and other animals to sleep normally.

    I really want an Aviary but I'm concerned about the cold(NJ) have you been able to keep them alive during winter?

    • @lowkeelukes
      @lowkeelukes 2 роки тому +1

      Certain species can adjust to temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius . I keep java, owl, zebra, society, red head and green singer finches aswell as button quail all through the winter.

      I had my 10 x 10 x12 Aviary built off of my screened in porch. I had the builder shingle the roof and enclose the eaves, not only for protection from predators but to help keep the cold out. I put hardware cloth in 4' sections and enclosed the base (2' all the way around the base of the aviary) and insulated between the walls. I do not use ML plastic on the exterior of my aviary, I use clear greenhouse panels, you can buy these at any lumber yard or box store. They are made to collect more light and aren't as opaque. On the screened porch I use the heaviest ML clear shower curtain (cheap at Walmart) I can find and it helps bring in the light. I run a box style heater on my porch which helps to keep the aviary warm + I have an indoor aviary on the porch as well. Good luck, don't give up, people have aviaries in cold weather everywhere! Hope this helps some.

      @@lowkeelukes Think about it, You can store them year after year, plastic you can't. These gather much more light as that is what they are designed to do. Heavy Mil plastic is too opaque and can rip in heavy winds, YIKES! Good luck!

      @@debbieverret4033 Yes, sounds good, although I've used plastic successfully for 3 or 4 winters already. It even held up to 100 km/hr wind gusts. These days I have to patch up holes made by predators though.

      I'm in Toronto. Last winter wasnt cold at all. But the year before I think we touched minus 40 with the windchill. I've not had a bird die from the cold.
