    Back in the day I had most of the Dizzy adventure games on Amstrad and Amiga but that extra colour makes such a difference on the Speccy...and Dizzy looks mouldy on the CPC.
    Love them on Amiga too but I felt they were that little bit better and more at home on the 8-Bits.
    I always played them on my own as my best friend Ollie didn't like Dizzy and we played stuff like Gauntlet, Renegade, Gryzor etc...I loaded Dizzy the moment he sodded off lol
    Spot on video OSG and I'm glad to have been of some help. Ta for the mention fella :-)

    You must be unaware of the Dizzy Act passed in Parliament in 1998 which states any top list of Dizzy games must have Treasure Island Dizzy on the Amiga at number one.

    Dizzy for me personally is one of the best games of ALL TIME. I feel sorry for today's kids who will not feel the joy of playing such games back in the 1980s on the Spectrum and Commodore. Videos like this make me happy and sad at the same time. My generation grew up in a much better and happier times. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!

    My Big brother had majority of these games back in the day for his amstrad. I got to play some in mid 90s lol. However i managed to find fantastic Dizzy ( My personal fave) on the plug in controller type games recently

  • @krissymarklewis1793
    @krissymarklewis1793 Рік тому +4

    My fave was always magic land Dizzy, the music and puzzles were great even though some of the jumps had to be pixel-perfect. Even though I loved the graphics of treasure island Dizzy if you dropped the wrong item you were fucked and may as well reset. I'm surprised nobody has resurrected the franchise just even with nice graphics, have some speech and make it 2D,a Dizzyvania as such. Keep the single screens but have a bit of scrolling here and there.

    • @blatherskite3009
      @blatherskite3009 Рік тому

      Thanks for the kind words about Magicland :) I was the designer on that one - the first one that the Oliver Twins didn't do - and at the time I was just happy that it wasn't a franchise-killer. Anyway, the 2015 game "Mystik Belle" is the closest thing I've played to what you describe - it has a very similar blend of puzzles 'n' platforming to the Dizzy games but with a healthy dose of Metroidvania thrown in.

    • @krissymarklewis1793
      @krissymarklewis1793 Рік тому

      @@blatherskite3009 ah awesome, I always assumed the Oliver Twins did it. I still mean to play the latest one. I always ended up either down the well or in the water trying to jump on that bloody shark's fin for hours so I guess I have you to blame for that. I've always thought it was the pinnacle of the Dizzy games, what other games did you work on?

    • @blatherskite3009
      @blatherskite3009 Рік тому +1

      @@krissymarklewis1793 I left Codemasters when the game was 90% complete so never got to do any final playtesting. The shark was meant to be easy, moving at the same speed as Dizzy, so all you were supposed to do was time your jump to land on it, keep walking, and jump off at the other side. That was the idea, anyway...
      That was the first and last game I did. Left the games industry after that and did "fun" law stuff instead. Big Red (the guys who were contracted to code Magicland to the design spec I wrote) took over on the next game along, designing and coding it.
      Codemasters did contact me to see if I wanted to do Dizzy 5 but were only offering a flat payment of £100 to do it. Even back in 1990 that simply wasn't worth the time that I wanted to put into the project, because I wanted to do something a bit more ambitious after (mostly) "playing it safe" with Magicland.
      The only real change I made with Magicland was Dizzy no longer dying with one hit, just because it p*ssed me off so much with the earlier games :)

  • @romerogoon
    @romerogoon Рік тому

    Great list - and I know it's inherently a subjective opinion but there's some weird platform choices here. I can't say I've played the edition of Fast Food Dizzy shown here, but the Amiga/ST version was a lot faster and a lot more frantic.
    Same with Fantastic Dizzy - the Master System edition was a programming wonder when you consider the scale of the game, but the Mega Drive version has a genuinely beautiful soundtrack rather than the MS cart which sounds like someone's emptied a change jar down some wooden stairs.
    I respect the dissenting opinions though, even if I disagree. Thanks for the nostalgia!

    About test of time - adventure parts of Dizzy definitely didn't stand it. Dead ends in the first game, lives system (which seems horribly distracting for time consuming game where puzzle solving requires you to wander a lot) and Rick Dangerous learn by heart traps in Treasure Island. Series got old badly, imho.

  • @magicknight8412

    The only one i would disagree on is Dizzy (the first in the series), on the Spectrum there is no music and you have THE most annoying walking noise. Amstrad version has good music and plays the same and looks the same without colour clash :) My favourite probably is the first one and Fantasy World Dizzy

    I had the Dizzy Collection on c64, which was Dizzy 1-4 plus Fast Food. I also had Dizzy Panic.
    Of those, Magicland and Fantasy were the best. I just replayed Fantasy a week ago, and it was still fun.
    My first ever experience of Dizzy was Fantasy on the Atari ST at my friend's house. I still mean to replay that version, as I recall some differences from the C64

  • @merman1974
    @merman1974 Рік тому +1

    Totally agree with the number 1 on the list. But there are problems lower down. Kwik Snax on Spectrum and Amstrad is just a clone of Pengo. The C64 version is much more interesting, a maze game inspired by the Sega arcade title Flicky. Dizzy Down The Rapids is also a much better spin-off than Fast Food (which was originally going to be sponsored by Happy Eater, but they withdrew). And Magicland Dizzy is inferior to Crystal Kingdom Dizzy in my view.

      maybe the idea was pitched and they all went off did their own thing, the Spectrum and the Amstrad were so similar that a lot of the games were just ports from one to the other (bit like Amiga and ST) good to see you again Ronnie :-)

      Kwik Snax on the C64 screams 'reskin'. And I think it was great - there were so many ideas crammed into that game (the weapons, the collectables, the hidden rooms and bonus round to name a few) - it just doesn't seem like something Codemasters would have intentionally commissioned, I reckon this was someone's original game that they bought and rebranded as Kwik Snax to fill the gap in the cross-platform coverage.
