  • This video describes Sewall's Wright's metaphor of a fitness landscape in evolutionary studies.
    Five major insights from using the fitness landscapes are presented:
    (1) The pattern of variation can influence the evolutionary trajectory.
    (2) The pattern of variation can influence the final phenotype.
    (3) Response to selection does not guarantee the best outcome.
    (4) Stochasticity (randomness) can be important.
    (5) Certain landscapes can facilitate speciation.
    The video shows how the pattern of heritable phenotypic variation and stochasticity can influence the trajectory of species straits is shown.

    Thank you very much. I have a question if you could help me to understand. What is the difference between races -I mean Asian, African, Indian, European etc. I am really interested in knowing this. So their phenotype is different. Are they sub species?

      there are many ways to categorise organisms into different species (and sub-species). the biological species concept is one of them. according to this one (iinw, the most prominent one), members of a species will be able to interbreed and produce fertile offspring. given that asians, africans, indians, europeans etc. can potentially do this, we usually consider them to be part of the same species, and do not further subdivide them into sub-species.

      The genetic differences between human "races" are extremely minor and physical differences superficial so people wouldn't be placed into different scientific categories. Culturally we tend to overly focus on a few minor phenotypic traits which represent almost nothing at the genetic level.
