  • August 26, 2024 mountain bike workout up through the Garden to Ute Valley Park and up the Triple Threat Trail, then down Winding Woods to Rocky Top Trail.
The songs are "Angel From Montgomery" by John Prine, from his eponymous 1971 album.
A recording from our first City Club gig in 1990, with Brian on guitar and melody, Laura on harmony and me on mandolin and third harmony.
...and "Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett, from his 1977 album "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes".
A recording from Halloween night in 1991, at Meadow Muffins (Now Mother Muffs) to play a nautical themed song for a couple wearing Penguin costumes.
Prine wrote "Angel from Montgomery" after a friend suggested writing "another song about old people," referring to Prine's song "Hello in There." Although he had "said everything I wanted to [about seniors] in 'Hello in There'" he was intrigued by the idea of "a song about a middle-aged woman who feels older than she is...[Eventually]
"I had this really vivid picture of this woman standing over the dishwater with soap in her hands...She wanted to get out of her house and her marriage and everything. She just wanted an angel to come to take her away from all this." Prine believes he likely was drawn to Montgomery as the song's setting by virtue of being a fan of Hank Williams, who had ties to that city.
Buffett was recording the album at Criteria Studios in Miami.
One day during recording, he complained about a bad day he recently had on the beach, which included losing one of his flip-flops on his way home from a bar, cutting his foot on a beer can pop top, and running out of salt for his margarita.
Buffett was already working on a set of lyrics about the incident, to which producer Norbert Putnam told him, "That's a terrible idea for a song."
A few days later, Buffett played a rough version of the song, then called "Wasted Away Again in Margaritaville," and Putnam and others at the studio realized it had potential as a hit.
The video has a baby Garter snake snoozing on the trail, a glider way south from the AFA, Purple Poppy Mallow and the trails.
Filmed with a GoPro Hero 12 and iPhone pro max 14.
