There are lots of good gardeners. BUT, to be a good gardener AND a great teacher, is a very rare combo! You are one of these rare combos, Robbie. You explain everything in basic form, so regardless of one's inexperience, or experience, it's so easy to understand. And absorb. Hands on training, along with verbal explanations, are the major key to true education. Thanks again for "teaching this old dog new tricks". Never knew you could transplant root crops.

Yes, I've transplanted carrot seedlings . . most often they do fine but they grow "wonky" (not straight) as you said. I'm trying the gel method I've seen on a few channels. --> Soak the seed a few days until it germinates, make a cooked gel of cornstarch and water very dilute, cooked til it thickens, put the soaked seeds in the COOLED off gel in a plastic bag, cut the corner of the bag so it works like a pastry bag. . . .squeeze the gel-carrot seed solution in a line into the soil and the sprouted carrots will be spaced out well. It looks like it would work very well. We will see. I just tried it.

Thank you for this information, great information. I planted lots of seeds this year (first time for me), only about 7 started to sprout up, it's been weeks. One day took a closer look to find 3 with the greens chomped away, looked closer and could see a slug trail, so now I've put them on a table, higher up, and covered them with eggshells and it looks as though the green is coming through again slowly, on 2 of them. Not getting many sunny days here and been cold too, here in the UK, but I will persevere. Thanks again.

    • @ttb1513

I’m in zone 5a and had a couple carrots survive the winter and the next summer these biennial plants flowered, went to seed, and then dried up and spread the tiny seeds throughout that area. The following spring these seeds are sprouting new carrot plants.
The secret: my laziness. I did NOTHING (other than admire the nice umbel shaped flowers).
Year 1: Don’t harvest in the fall. Didn’t mulch or anything for winter protection.
Year 2: Carrot plant, being biennial, flowers and goes to seed. I just let the flowers dry and seeds drop.
Year 3: Lots of new carrot plants sprout.
A single plant produces at least a few flowers and each flower head has a LOT of seeds. The germination rate doing it natures way like this is low, but there are so, so many seeds that many plants still sprout.

Do you think it was not too long, because the weather was cool? I’m wondering why I escaped the woodiness, so far anyway.
