You mentioned "pre-shot" routine. I know for most people it is very boring and probably irritating to do, but when I practice and train, one of the things I also do is practice my pre-shot routine. The WHOLE routine, over and over again. When I get on the course, my pre-shot routine is so ingrained into my brain that I can't really play without it. I have a VERY detailed routine and I execute it EXACTLY the same ALL the time. I actually spent quite a lot of time over the years perfecting my pre-shot routine. There are several elements to it, very important elements that ensure I have proper target alignment, envision my shot shape, swing preparation and the most important thing, it prepares me to COMMIT to the shot, no matter what, I commit to the shot, no second guessing. Doesn't mean it will necessarily be a good shot (plenty of bad ones happen) but it means I will have MORE good shots. Committing is super important. A strong pre-shot routine, exactly repeatable, makes a HUGE difference. I have pre-shot routines for each type of shot too, Tee, fairway, hazard, putting. It takes some time and effort to develop these routines and to ingrain them so they become absolutely automatic without even thinking about it on course. Once you get that, your on course play becomes much easier, you can concentrate on the "chess" part of the game of golf, the fun part!

@@squidly2112 yep, I have practiced it before, but now with some swing changes and the fact I just don't do it, it is time to get disciplined, because like you said, it will be a game changer, because I can hit the ball, I am just not focused enough.

@@Projectgolfmatthewryan - As you progress, I suggest you develop quite a detained routine. It takes some time to do, but worth it. It is probably easiest to begin with the largest parts of the routine, the easily identifiable, major pieces. Once you have that down as automatic, then you can add the more subtle elements. My routines are comprised of many pieces, some of the obvious major pieces, but a whole lot of tiny little pieces that most people wouldn't even pick up on if they watched it. ALL of the pro's do this. If you really watch someone like Tiger, review his routine over and over, you can probably build a list of at least 50 things he does. Some very obvious, but many very very subtle. In fact, I just recently discovered one that I hadn't realized before. I have begun to incorporate it into my own routine and it is transforming my swing. I have found it quite remarkable, that one little addition to my routine just corrected 3 of my most pesky swing flaws. And it's just a tiny little thing but with a HUGE impact to my swing. I am still just awestruck that I had never discovered this before and what this stupid little thing is doing to my swing. My jaw is literally on the floor, still.

@@Projectgolfmatthewryan - Part of my training/practice routine, once I have worked on a specific swing change or flaw fix, I run through the entire process, over and over, shot after shot, from start to finish. That helps a lot. Takes a bit more time to hit 1,000 balls, but, it really solidifies the permanency of the routine.

I am going to do exactly that come up with something, and practice it every time I hit balls, spend at least half the time out there going through it until it becomes a habit. This is all great advice, thank you!

Back in the day, we used to play an occasional 1 club round. You pick 1 club out of your bag, grab 1 ball and 1 tee. That's it, that's all you get. If you lose your ball, your round is finished. If you break your tee, you don't get to use a tee anymore. It was a lot of fun and requires quite a different strategy to score well, from choosing the right club, to choosing the right targets on the course. Several years ago, I did this with some after work friends on a 9 hole round. I showed up on the 1st tee box with just 1 club, 1 ball and a tee. They couldn't figure out what I was doing. I said, "I'm too lazy to carry all of my clubs, so I will play against you with just this one" (my choice was a 6 iron). By the end of the round, they were a little bit irritated, because I beat them with just 1 club. HAHA! .. That was back when I could really smoke a 6 iron when I needed to, so I wasn't too far behind their drives on the longer holes and I could get green in regulation on the shorter par 4's. The biggest problem was putting with a 6 iron. You have to be very careful to impact the ball as close to the equator as you can so you don't impart spin or loft on the ball. It's fun to do sometimes. Lot's of goofy games like that one can play. And then there's "speed golf", which we used to do occasionally too. I am probably too old to do that now and might drop dead on the course if I tried .. LOL

There definitely will be a 1 club challenge on this channel! But when it is drier out, and when I practice my 100 in game more.
