    I have been in Canada for 15 years and I got grounded very early on when I realized that I can't compare myself to those who were born and raised here. So realizing that I had to start from scratch, without any savings and possibly lots of hurdles to jump though such as culture shock,racism, lack of community and networking..... humility jumps in.

    Yes we are broke because those back home treat us as ATM machines,never stopping to think about what sacrifices and the hours we spent making our money .This is why I stopped making posts about my life abroad, some people back home get so catty about it, especially If they once asked me for money or to sponsor them for a visa and I told them that I am broke I can't afford it, my Visa type does not allow me to sponsor anybody unless they are close family members ie my parents., I get put off.

Always ask them to tell the truth to those back home on the realities here but they won’t instead they want to borrow from me to go and impress and I am like no I too will want to go and show off but I know it’s all a lie. A friend has 3 kids here with two Danish women separated with them cause Danish women can’t stand a show off who has nothing. My phone rings almost all the time for child support money to borrow and I say no. Black tax is the #1 reason why a lot Nigerians are broke overseas. Nigerians in Nigeria send you invitations for countless ceremonies - birthdays, burials, weddings , child dedications, house warming parties, thanksgivings , graduation parties with the intent to collect money from you even though you are not going to be physically present in those ceremonies due to distance barriers. They also bother you with other financial issues such as rents, school fees , Christmas bills, hospital bills, money to support their businesses , etc. You have to avoid black tax by all means if you must grow financially overseas. You have to send money to people back home according to your financial capacity while bearing in mind that you CANNOT solve every problem because you are not GOD. Do not lend money to anyone back home in Naija. He or she is most likely not going to pay you back.

    This is a much more complex issue, especially in the US. Immigrants come into a country where your necessities are inflated. Housing, health care, child care and education. These are cost where it’s almost impossible to avoid. Especially being new to the country, you can’t inherit assets that cut cost for you like a family home so you pay high rent. You fall into debt even with several jobs. Which is the whole point of the system, to give you debt for everything you want or need. The iPhones and instagram don’t help but they’re not the root cause. The road to success is here but very narrow and getting more so. I was lucky but avoiding debt is almost impossible, the American dream isn’t what it use to be. Most people just make as much as they can sell everything and go back home so they can reduce their cost of living.

    Cost of living is high. Especially in the cities. Apartment alone is about $1,200/month. And you must pay your rent, or you would be evicted. This is not Nigeria where people owe 2 years rent. If you owe here, you would be evicted, and your credit score would be severely affected. To rent another place becomes difficult.

    I volunteer helping immigrate and this is such great and common sense advice but I see so many people want the fast and easiest way to immigrate versus longterm success. Many chose easy study programs where they can work the most and not programs that will lead to good well paying income after graduation. Many are also facing family/community pressure to immigrate and not looking whether it makes sense to immigrate. I always counsel potential immigrants to look whether it makes sense to immigrate especially if you are successful in your home country. I unfortunately also see new immigrants trusting members of their expat community and unfortunately many take advantage of their own home community members. Whether it is charging high rents and renting rooms in poor condition for high prices or getting people jobs that really benefits the business owner. Many people feel like they had go through a tough time when they immigrated, they feel they need to take advantage of the current new immigrants. I always suggest it is best to try to integrate into the wider community.

    No matter how you slice it.Truth is most LEGAL immigrants live below or on the poverty line. In the US anyone making 50,000 a year and below is poor and most immigrants and Africans are in this pool and stay here for long .Things are much worse for illegal, students and other types of visa applicants working in the US. Living in apartments or driving a lended car may seem luxurious in Nairobi or Lagos but in countries like the US, UK it's poverty.

    • @henry5118
      @henry5118 Рік тому +2

      The so called "poverty line" does not equate to suffering. 50k dollars a year is not a bad income by any means, but I get your point though.

    • @lmwanthi
      @lmwanthi Рік тому

      @@henry5118 50k is not bad I agree but it's average! That may vary if you are single or married. But most African immigrants live above or on the poverty line . whether we help each other or not. It doesn't matter. Our destiny is already pre- determined as far the US/ UK/ EU/ Schengen /Balkan states in concerned. These people have done their "racist homework"..

    • @lmwanthi
      @lmwanthi Рік тому

      @@henry5118 poverty line does note mean suffering but it does mean you will spend twice the amount of energy and time to accomplish what would have been done in a simpler and much linear way if you were not an AFRICAN immigrant

    • @lmwanthi
      @lmwanthi Рік тому

      majority of the young africans in cities with IT careers you talk about could be 2nd generation/ unverisity graduates/ expatriates. 1st generation young african diasporans cant handle the expenses and life of the city during their early years of living abroad. In the US for examples African diasporians will move to states that favor them financially (cost of living) and where they can establish themselves ( learn the culture) as opposed to living in cities like NY, LA, Chicago e.t.c. 2nd generation africans/ graduates/expatriates find it easy to move in these spaces cause they dont have to deal with those problems.

    Thank U, u ladies are so smart. I said the same thing. Everyone, moving abruptly without preparation. I'm cautious and like to make several trips to a place bc things change, and it's a new place, it's lots to learn. Lots of Blk Americans are retiring in Ghana which is fine, I'll be visiting in the future as well, but just on vacation, and to research the place.
    I wish u ladies would do a vlog on AirBnB in Africa. What do you think is it safe? or a Scam.

I never understood why people send so much money to waste on food, call phones and clothes.....these black dominant countries have land resources, go plant and stop begging to buy frivolous things. Glad you're addressing this problem, its bigger than you think.. Impulse migration. Yeeeeeers, may have wasted many years abroad .....do you know what can be accomplished staying in your country.
