    nothing beats a good set of snow tires! I live in an area where snow tires are mandatory from December 15th to March 15th. No one uses chains here except for the farmers on their tractors In winter. Also, it is illegal here to drive with chains on the roads, we are only allowed studs in our winter tires.

      +Atouk No, I think the chain must has inserts that to be fitted in the deep thread on the tire, otherwise it will likely slide away while driving. If it is laid flat on the pavement, how can you drive that precise at the scale of millimeters to get the thread land on the chain inserts?

    • @grrunf
      @grrunf 8 років тому +5

      +roger S.jr. (rms555)
      No,
      inner chain circle is smaller than tire circle.
      Connections are inside lower tire profile.
      Losing pressure doesn't make tire radius smaller. ;)

    • @PotatoGunsRule
      @PotatoGunsRule 8 років тому

      +Don KiksBiscuits I don't think or you'd have to have a flat to have a problem. Since you have to pull over and stop with a flat, you have to take it off and change it anyway.
      That would be a pain though!
      1). Loosen lug nuts.
      2). Jack up car.
      3). Remove chains.
      4). Remove tire.
      5). Put on spare.
      6). Put chains on spare.
      7). Lower car and tighten lug nuts.
      If you carry that wimpy "compact spare" you'll have to swap out a good back tire and put the compact tire onto the back (assuming front wheel drive car).

    • @grrunf
      @grrunf 8 років тому

      better to switch operation 5-6 to 6-5
      ...aftherwhat you will have to
      8) turn the key,
      9) start the car,
      10) press the pedal to resume driving. ;))

    • @PotatoGunsRule
      @PotatoGunsRule 8 років тому

      +grrunf Try it both ways and get back to me. In the snow, it's probably going to be easier to mount the spare first and then put the chains onto it.
      But I'm open-minded, prove me wrong. I'll thank you for it if you do.
      Now modern spares are compact tires and not the same size so the chains would not fit that tire at all. I put my chains on the front only so if I have a front flat I will put a good rear tire onto the front, the compact spare onto the back, the chains onto the front tire, flat tire in the trunk (boot), and be off again. This will be time-consuming and cold exercise! LOL

    How do they not fall off to the side of the tire, nothing is holding them centered? And how are you sure they would fit your tire, as they are made up by fairly long segments? Regular chains are easier to install.

    Every time I have had to stop and put on chains, I already have a layer of pack snow around the tire. So wrapping these around then compressing them on the tire with the shown tool to make the connection would require I soon stop to do it again. They would wear into that mentioned packed snow around the tire and become loose. I could see stopping to re-tighten them just to find they fell off already. Good thing about conventional chains is the elastic tightener straps are constantly pulling them tight.
    I agree that good snow tires go along way but there are times when the extra bite that chains can give you will make the difference.

    • @PotatoGunsRule
      @PotatoGunsRule 9 років тому

      Craig VanMeter You know, I think you are right! I think it would be much more difficult to put these on with the needed tire grooves full of road debris (gravels) and frozen snow/ice. Good eye man!
      I'll stick with my cumbersome but cheap and 100% effective tire chains.
