Does it track straight or does it require corrective nudges on the steering to keep it going straight?? I always wondered if a limited slip/open diff would work. Are you a tracker? Oh yeah it requires corrective nudges at high speed over 20mph, although I've driven controlled diff machines that wander too at speed. I wonder if a limited slip would compromise steering ability with high speed running? Do they make LS diffs that turn off&on? Not an amtracker, I thought the acronym was fitting for the machine. I don't know if you're interested but I will be releasing more plans/kitsets soon: www.decentmfg.com. It's not the cheapest kit out there but it might be useful and save you some time. Awesome build man! I've had something similar on the drawing board for awhile! I have a few questions/thoughts: Have you been in a situation where the vehicle either gets stuck or doesn't track straight due to the open differential? Also, I plan to use mine as a utility vehicle so a space for cargo would be needed. What are your thoughts with a similar design but utilizing an engine and trans axle out of a Front wheel drive car? Again, awesome build!
Thanks. Yes I have gotten it stuck several times (there is a video on youtubes in swamp goo). Over 15mph it does track a bit, relying on quick corrective motions from the driver. This is mainly due to the "stubbyness" of the vehicle, a compromise to skid steer easier. I have a customer up in Canada who put a 1.6l VW diesel in his machine. It goes slower, but he said it will climb his snowpiles at idle in low gear. He locked the transaxle diff with by welding.
Out of interest if you reversed the transmission with the engine at the front and the drive at the back would your beam suspension then work?, while having the engine at the front would be less good for weight distribution it would give you more usable cargo space, always had a soft spot for tracked vehicles.
Nice build! Few questions & tips tho... Why such heavy steel skin, why not a simple ladder frame? Will it float? A $30 GM alt is easy to fab up to charge battery, and smaller bore master cylinder will equal greater pressure at caliper.
Thanks! Yep it floats! If you check out my newer vids I did end up adding a chevy alternator to the yota for electric fans and such. I opted for the fabricated sheet steel because it was less time consuming to produce compared to cutting a tube steel skeleton and then skinning with sheet steel.
Nice build! Those Russian machines are an inspiration indeed. Those guys are ingenious and highly creative. I have always been curious about this type of drive system. Do you run one of the transmissions in reverse to get forward motion? I don't see How it would work otherwise.
So whats the story on making it turn right to left, is it a limited slip differential, and all you have to do is have brakes either side and lock the right or left side, making it work? i kinda thought if you tried to brake one side only that it would try and spin it.
Torsion bar, or that fancy trailer suspension axle dealio, where you take a square tube, slide four round stock bars of rubber, set them in the four corners, and put a square bar to which you've welded the axle or whatever setup you want (they have a lever type arm). Seems pretty efficient to me, and compact. The actual name escapes me atm, but it works pretty well from what i've seen. Also, ditch the cast teeth, and get yourself some phenolic, for true Russian engineering. I kid, but it's actually much better, as it takes a lot to wear it down, but it's not hard enough to damage the track either.
Yeah I think the trade name is torflex or something. I kinda like the idea of a steel torsion bar setup, maybe it comes from my interest in tanks lol. Regarding the poly sprocket teeth, they didn't experience too much wear, even through sand and rock I ran through. To each their own I suppose.
Awsome build man I recently thought of wanting to become a dirt bike mechanic but or just know mechanical parts in general so what knowledge would you need to be able to build a tracked vehicle like that just a mechanic or mechanical engineer and other skills like welding ?
Getting into mechanics isn't too hard if you follow the right people. It's easy to learn with the power of the internet nowadays. I'd recommend seeing if you can get summer/part time job wrenching for a shop to learn and see if it's what you want to do as a career. Regarding automotive electrical, it's becoming more difficult avoiding today's computer controlled internal combustion engines. There are options like industrial diesels, pre 80s gas and diesel engines where electrical is minimal. I don't think computer controlled ICEs are as bad as people make them out to be, just label your connectors on the wiring harness and sensors when reassembling. The simpler stuff is becoming harder to find, so it's good to learn about it.

Ok, so what is the secret for setting up the differential so that it doesn't free float on one side, without locking the axles? Which seams would negate the brake steering.
Secret is the BRAKES!! lol. Not a big secret though!. Most everyone knows if you use the brake on the left, Then the right will pull!!. You're over thinking it bud!!!. It's a really simple system.
Oh are you talking about drop center tracks like on a bombardier or nodwell vs tracks with separate tire guides like on mine? Really it is a matter of preference, the one disadvantage I see with drop center tracks is the small contact area on rock and hardpack, apparently this issue breaks lots of nodwell grousers. However the simplicity and economy in those drop center tracks is undeniable.
Really the only way to make your tracks completely rustproof is by using heat treated aluminium or stainless steel. Paint would just wear off after several hours of use.

I am thinking next year "modernizing" the undercarriage with steel torsion bar suspension and replacing the differential axle with a clutch brake unit. The chassis has been great to me over it's life, I even managed to crumple the front 3/16" glacis plate on a boulder lol
And another one: How would it go with a 4x4 transmission that has a low ratio option? My Mitsubishi Pajero (Shogun) has this, and locks both front and back prop shafts together.
@@kieranh2005 that should work, you wouldn't need a second transmission then. Plus you could run a propeller or jet drive off the the rear side of the tcase
Would it work if you limited the walking beam? I build a trailer timber forwarder and had same problem with it coming too high and the wheel catching..I limited it and problem went
I actually did limit it at first to prevent wheel collision. However, this did not solve the instability issue of the walking beam. What I found is when 2/3 of your track base is on a pivot, the vehicle becomes unstable on grades. While you could theoretically create a sprung walking beam with leafs or coils, I decided just to lock it out. How is your tracked build going?

Very cool, your video is very detailed and well done. You could opt for a leaf spring setup with house trailer axles for the idlers instead of torsion bars, wouldnt ride as good as coil springs but simpler. Also, what about moving your braking system, rotors and caliper to the rear dead axle? I have been toying with a track vehicle lately myself and you have given me some good ideas. I am looking for sprocket ideas and this helps. Cost me around $5k. Costs can vary though depending on where you live, I've had Canadians build this rig from the plans and the costs were $7-8k USD. Just an FYI...

Problem is, to do it right, you gotta go all out and cast the track links, 1/4" steel hull, etc. which adds up in cost. If you are seriously interested I can scope the project out, but it might take awhile as I am putting my time into other pursuits.

Check out ShawnCFarm on UA-cam, he bought an old carrier from a junkyard, slapped a motor in it and put a truck cab on top, called the Tankenstein I believe. That would be most cost effective way, if you can repower one from the scrapyard. I think a repro-mod kit makes sense for rarer vehicles like the smaller inter-war Carden-Loyd style machines. You could probably replace the entire lower tub portion with 3/16" steel if you really wanted to, you just reduce payload capacity. I've hit boulders at 3mph and the 1/8" steel belly holds up just fine. Just my 2 cents...

Motorcycle coil over shocks might be a viable alternative to torsion bar suspension. That could tame your reverse problem, at least.

Differential is flipped upside down to reverse rotation.

Stupid question: where did you get the tracks? Building a tank for kid for airsoft. Can't locate tracks anywhere.

It's an open differential steered via brakes.

why do you have 2 transmissons?

Also I saw a video of a Russian track that had durotorque type suspension. This would probably be an option for you.

Probably like $10k at the time of construction. Steel prices have jumped 4 fold since then, so you're pushing much higher than that nowadays.
