  • Cannondale’s cross country-specific mountain bike range, the Scalpel, has a new hardtail family member for 2022 - the Scalpel HT.
This latest addition to the range follows in the footsteps of its full suspension sibling, with slack, trail-focussed geometry.
The numbers are headlined by a 65.5-degree head angle and proportional chainstay lengths that grow by 5mm for each size of Scalpel HT.
It has a new dropped seat stay design, said to smooth out the ride, much like the brand’s SAVE Micro-Suspension seen on the F-Si. Unsurprisingly it’s built around 29in wheels front and back, but now gets from 100 to 110mm of front wheel travel depending on model.
What do you think of the new Scalpel HT? Has a hardtail Scalpel been a long time coming? Or should Cannondale have kept it full suspension only? Let us know down in the comments.

I think it's amazing how they have managed to make a hardtail that ugly. And if you order one don't expect to get that fancy cannondale/garmin sensor. I work in a cannondale dealer and all bikes above 1500,- euros should have that sensor but only 2 of the bikes we recieved have them. On a positive note i think the really progressive geo is awesome.

67° HTA with 100 mm fork or 66° with 120 mm fork might be pretty close to HT trail bike numbers, but just 470-460 mm reach (with 100-120 mm forks and largest frame size) is no way near trail bike reach numbers. Nor is the XL frames 530 mm tall seat mast. I would have liked to seen +30 mm reach on Small, +40 mm on M, +50 mm on L, and +60 mm reach on XL.

Normally I love short chain stays, but combined with the super slack head angles (for XC standards) the longer stays should make sense. I'm really curious to try one!

How old? I’ve got a ‘96 f600 that I have, over the years, upgraded. It’s really cool! Still has the bull horn handlebar ends. Weighs about 22 pounds. I really don’t want to buy a new one, but I am strangely drawn back to the cannondales and their proprietary suspension and funny quirks. I am curious what a fellow Cannondale guy thinks.

I just bought the Carbon2 Scalpel HT and did a few rides on a tight, twisty track. The bike is very responsive and handles very well in short corners. I was surprised how well the front end responded to minimal corrections. Not sure yet about the back-end. Sometimes I feel a little movement that I'm not used to. Hard to describe but it feels like a little resistance on the back when I'm trying to accelerate near the end of a corner. But, I need to do more different tracks/longer rides to get to know the bike. So far I'm very happy with it.

I wonder why they didn't just modify the geometry for the F-Si and keep that their XC racing HT, but I can see the Scalpel name is well known and since Specialized does the same with their Epic being offered in both a HT and a full suspension version. The new geo is awesome, glad to see it, but what sucks about the industry now is their abandoning the front derailleur and forcing us into a 1x drivetrain. That's fine if you ONLY ride your on trails, but for me I use my bikes as both my trail bikes and my road bikes. I have 2 sets of wheels for all my bikes with one set having road tires on it and the other dirt tires on it, I just change the wheels real fast for whatever ride I want to do. A 1x drivetrain doesn't have the gearing for 45 mph decents. Sucks! My F-Si is a 2x12 with custom gearing so as much as this new Scalpel is beautiful, I'm not gonna switch right yet. If they put a front derailleur mount on it I'd get one as soon as I can, but we all know most likely none of us will ever won one.

I have to say that is incredible value on the lower end models! $2,200 for a Sid Sl fork and a carbon frame is excellent. Maybe the brakes could be a little nicer but that’s an easy fix and not as big a deal.

Iterative innovation on purpose. They had the opportunity to implement the Kingpin "rear suspension" to put it against the Trek ProCaliber or BMC Team Elite.
They may implement it further down the road.....but the technology (and patent) exists now. I call it a missed opportunity, but if we see it come later, its because they want to sell this first and then get people to buy the updated version with the Kingpin.....

I like the frame. Still I think fork choice is a mistake. Scalpel HT should be user friendly capable XC bike with 120mm travel across the range. F-Si should stay hard core 100mm XC whippet for those willing to put up with compatibility issues to gain a few extra milliseconds on traditional XC course.

Sensor is to talk with your phone and corresponding Cannondale app. Maybe some really don't want to use a head unit. Seems extraneous to me as I don't want to mount my phone on the handlebar to see my riding stats nor use up my phone's battery. Tracking mileage for maintenance makes no sense either as the conditions you ride in affects the maintenance more than anything else.

I think specing this without a dropper post is a big mistake. Release a cross country hardtail with this kind of geometry and no dropper? I guess you could argue this kind of XC hardtail has less need of a dropper because of its geo but it just seems silly to me. Maybe because of covid shortages? Great bike , rides smooth ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L I added a bigger spring loaded seat to it . Takes a bit of adjusting cables to get brakes and shifting to perfect . I've owned quite a few bikes in the past that were absolutely uncomfortable to ride and they always ended up as garage wall decor . I'm not seeing that with this one. It's pretty light I've only ridden it a few miles but I like it . As for the pedals falling off in the other reviews , the pedal arms are aluminum along with the pedal studs look to be also . I would not overtighten them. I can see it would be very easy to overtighten them and strip the threads right off . All in all I think it's pretty good quality besides the aluminum pedal thing .

Why are bike companies abandoning riders that enjoy tight, twisty trails? As a Midwest rider, I find the new breed of bikes unrideable. They are making the bikes have slow handling. While this may help newer riders, it is at the expense of seasoned riders. I have been riding for over 20 years, and find it discouraging that the new bikes are forcing seasoned riders to relearn how to ride. I will be checking this bike OFF my list.

Cannondale is never a "cheap" option on paper, but once you get on one you immediately notice how much better the frame is designed than the competition. It's like having an XTR quality frame while most competitors offer SLX quality frames, and the frame has the most impact om the bike (geometry, comfort, weight, stiffness, speed, etc). Also they are super reliable. They invest a lot of money in R&D and once you have it between your legs you know what you paid extra for, and in my opinion Cannondales are generally really worth the extra money.
