As a fellow cardboard wargamer i am hyped for a faithful hex-and-chit wargame that doesn't just look like an automatized vassal module
Microprose! Ye Gods! I used to love Microprose Soccer well over 30 years ago, had no idea that they're still going!
I'm so pleased Micropose are back!
Appears to be an attempt at a pretty straightforward port of SL or ASL originally published by The Avalon Hill Game Company.
THG, yeah, I'd like to see more of this, either here or on Twitch. Thanks for the video!
Microprose has a lot of great upcoming games 3 B-17 ones as well
"I don't even know what this question mark is, but whatever it is it didn't shoot me." "and we killed...,...something." love the tone
Good to see this playthrough. Looks good and would love to see more.
This game looks promising. Far and away, though, MicroProse's most excellent game is F-19 Stealth Fighter.
No 😒
@@Zetler Yes (or one from the era of F-19 anyway)
Finally, a Microprose game on my wishlist that's coming out! Played the demo a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Not a fan of unlocking scenarios, but just wait until player mods start coming out.
Shades of Squad Leader
This is Advanced Squad Leader with a streamlined turn sequence. I hope they add more nationalities.
It's actually more like orig Squad Leader. There are no residual firepower, so you can execute the tactic of moving one unit at a time, drawing fire, and then moving other units to same hex with no risk of being fired upon - something ASL solved for.
Awesome! My friend got me a $50 Steam Card and I've been saving it for this one. So, I appreciate seeing if I'm in for what I'm hoping for. Great to see a game that doesn't start on Omaha beach. The lack of a Campaign was a turn off, but it sounds like the unlocks are a sort of Campaign into itself.
Thanks for the preview!
Bought the game 3 days ago. It does contain 5 campaigns.
@@captainhrothgar4637 Haha. Yeah, I ammended my Comment as I watched the vid.
I appreciate the extended confirmation, though! :)
How's it play in its current state? Worth jumping into, and enjoying the updates a they come?
@terry witzu I've played through all the tutorials and the first 2 American missions. Wonderful game if you like squad leader/ASL. Some comments indicate it's hard or too much RNG, but it's just like those boardgames. I won the second mission in just 5 turns as, if you pay attention to the manual and use the terrain to your advantage, the game is not hard...but those are also the easiest missions. I very much recommend this one to anyone who likes turn based tactical games. I also have seen no bugs.
@@captainhrothgar4637 Much appreciayed, and sold! I've never heard of this ASL game that people keep comparing it to, but I am a big fan of TBS.
First time I saw this it made me think of Flames of War. Any negative reviews are based on difficulty. If you're familiar with current state of FofW I am a die hard Infantry player. So, as long as I am immersed I have no problem with difficulty. This looks very immersive.
As for RNG, what is the alternative? A static set of stats that guarantees this unit will destroy the other?
The chaos of battle, and often luck are where all of the great WWII stories are born!
Avanced Squad Leader ;)
Yes this seems very close to ASL rules
Closer to SL than ASL, no ?
I thought the exact same thing! I have played a lot of ASL and it looks like it is borrowing heavily from that game system.
@@michaeljenkins1375
(shhh it's not ASL- cause copyrights)
But there are squad leaders and they do advance.
Appearances are deceiving. It is similar to ASL, but there are a lot of diferences. It will feel a lot like ASL, but it does play differently.
Aftermath might be the historical data that the scenario was based on, not the results of the scenario. Might also be, even though winning the scenario, this could be what ended up happening to those units moving forward. I might be reading into it too lol.
Man I don’t know about this one...
Game has a lot of potential
I feel units break a lot...
Elite infantry?
How much would low grade guys break?
Yea I was a little bothered by how units broke on a first volley that didn't kill or wound anyone. It seems like maybe "pinned" should be more common, but "broken" less.
This is something about US troops - they tend to break fairly easily, but they also rally very quickly with a leader.
This is clearly a near exact copy of Avalon Hill's Advanced Squad Leader. The only things missing are the combat result tables and die rolls.
As an ASL Grognard, this is disappointing with no ability to play against a Human. Once you figure out the AI weakness, it will always be exploited and it doesn’t learn.
maybe it will come later?
Looks like a very early version of John Tillers Talonsoft games from the 1990s and alittle of Avalon Hills Board Game Squad Leader
Maybe the aftermath was the historical outcome.
Oh, there is a Campaign. Solid! There's definitely much more to this game, even whithin the parameters of this Demo. Still, it looks like it's got an easy learning curve too it. SOLD!
Graphics for me looks like Strategic Mind but in cartoony way
Goes without saying but, as the game tells you OFFICERS will calm down your men at the end of a turn. If their is a Star unit nearby they seem to calm down alot faster then normal, even under pressure from the enemy.
Yeah, when he moved the officer out of the broken stack at the start...;-p Well, that's just a rookie player mistake, he won't do that again if he plays more.
i love ASL so this looks good to me.
You can compare vehicles and their armor/gun capabilities in the garage

🧐
😮
There’s some lines of code that bear closer inspection.
"Forward" routing I assume is a programing bug.
Well, in ASL you can't rout a broken unit(s) toward a known enemy location or, iirc, a last known enemy location. So if the game is trying to be a port of ASL then that would be a bug.
I'm not trying to knock this and lord knows I'm a huge microprobe fan but I just don't understand the cartoony art style in military war games these days feels strange
Having to unlock scenarios is just stupid...
They can now be unlocked if you want!
I did not see any player yet who understood why his units caused enemy reactions. So much confusion in this game... I hope manual is really good written, otherwise it would be frustrating hell.
The computer will take reaction shots for both sides. It's not TOO complicated--it sees what it's chance is and the value of the target, and how much ammo they have per the scenario. So yeah, move a whole stack with a leader and they are likely to shoot, move just a crew and probably not.
10:30
It looks like you don’t know what the reinforcements are …?
Seems elite troops break fairly fast, a bit odd. Also, wtf are the ? above on on the chits for some of your own units. Seems wrong for some reason.
That means they are concealed. So they gain advantages over the enemy if you keep them out of line of sight, until you really want to fire them.
Can you split those squads up on the approach, so you don't give them such a dense target for MG fire?
I don’t see an option to do that, at least not in that scenerio.
Yeah, you just click on any of the ones in the stack on the lower right, and only that one moves. It's a very important thing to do: send then one by one to use up enemy response fire and not risk them all with on good hit.
24:08
Nope.
Not allowed to bust in any windows. Go thru the front door like gentlemen.
You can't move (in the move and fire phase) into a location occupied by the enemy. So he could go in the other hex of that building...😉
Hmmm. I'll pass. Time for game makers to double down on Avalon Hill reboots.
Locked scenarios and campaigns are a big turn off. Rethinking my desire to get it. :(
They can now be unlocked if you want!
ok....maybe the gameplay is good. But... 1996 called. They want their graphics back.
No British/Commonwealth forces?
That misses out a lot of the war for the allied side (assuming you can fight early battles as the Germans).
time constraints for the one man developer team for a tidy release. British are according to microprose discord already in dev and the semi-announced desert and jungle biomes hint at italians, japanese and USMC as well...
graphics are serviceable enough. this game will live and die by the depth and robustness of it's ai and combat mechanics. morale seems rather fubar so far.
Great game but no multiplayer sucks :(
No random map generator, no random scenario generator. Ummm...NOPE.
You won! But after that you lost.
15:55
Engine seems to under-value strong cover eg a LMG team in a building is immediately routed by rifle fire that comes from 100m away and through a tree line.
You get lucky sometimes... In this case, it was 3 squads with a good leader. The guys with the LMG were almost relatively exposed against this leader. (there was a 40% chance to do something to the german leader, and almost 70% to affect the squad...)
Will not buy it with locked scenarios.
They can now be unlocked if you want!
23:49
Spotted by a tank while moving through a house?
Your guys suck at sneaking.
Lesson to learn: when sneaking up in front of a tank, it is much better to be concealed 😉. Doesn't guarantee safety, but helps. Also not moving as a stack means less guys get affected if he does fire at you.
@@axeking240
They were inside a house.
Did the tank commander peer through the windows and spot them?
@@dougjb7848 Well.. consider that 3 squads and a leader moved in - thats close to 40 men. What are the odds that some of them moved where they could be seen? 😉

Awful graphics.
Everybody needs realism these days, don't they?
as an adaptatoin of ASL i don't really mind the graphics. Also this was for a very long time a one person project and for that it is insane what amount of content (units etc.) and features it includes.
@@DerTechadept Tigers on the Hunt, Close Combat, The Troop?
@@Pierluigi_Di_Lorenzo you complain about graphics and bring up tigers on the hunt? might aswell play ASL via vassal :p Close Combat 2 is an alltime favorite of mine but rather different than ASL (realtime vs. turnbased). The troop i have yet to play but it seems it is only brits vs. germans in how many scenarios? also how many vehicles available? editor? building physics (if simple ones) and fire? second front has all that.
Also going by the contemporary standard that CoH3 seems to set i don't see Second Front that far off graphicswise :p
@@DerTechadept Tigers on the Hunt is not for me, I suggested it because you like something similar to ASL. Close Combat is RTS, but the underlying rules are quite similar to ASL. There is also Lock n Load....
Turn based hex based no thanks it 2023 😂
44.99 no fuckin way
