Hell yeah!! Been playing for a LOOOONG time and took a break for a while. But, getting back into it, I find so many of these youtube "experts" are just boring. This is perfect. Get some good licks going and work on it from there.
Thank you for the video, Troy. This is the first of your videos I've seen, and as I'm coming back to the guitar after many years, this will definitely help me get back in the groove. Just thought of something after I left my comment. I really liked the way you have the tabs move as you are demonstrating these licks. I haven't seen anyone do that in these types of videos, but it helps me out seeing the movement.
Great video. Thank you. I appreciate you walking thru the details and the note steps. I need to hear language and see the demonstration, and highlights of what are the keys. Well done. I enjoyed the video
I had to subscribe just to watch you play WOW...........thank you Troy wish I were young again I'm retired ....maybe I can learn some of these....................NOT I will try though.......................peace for now young man.............stay blessed
Hey, when you do the full licks can you add the picking pattern when at full speed. I think I can get it, but it looks like when you teach it and the full sped lick the picking is a bit different. I’m bad enough that knowing it for sure would be helpful. Thx for these lessons. Cheers.
Take this excellent lesson a step further. Make up your own licks using this as influence and inspiration. If the lick is major, make it minor to start. Then go from there. Start slow it won’t sound good slow but get it under your fingers then speed it up. Get creative!!!
Thanks so much! I've posted the patch in the pinned comment above but it is direct into my Fractal FM9 using a Dumble amp model. Guitar is a Suhr standard pro.
@@troydownwardmusicI thought it sounded fantastic and very New Orleans! Love all four examples, you make it look so damn easy! I’m barely getting on the horse and you already dismounted 4 times 😂
Hey, do you purely think in intervals? Or combination of shapes and intervals? Judt learned the caged system and am workimg on intervals every day, and i am starting to question if i should purely focuse on intervals, as i suddenly can play diagonally without having to know which scale shape i am in.. if i switch to scale shapes, i suddenly have no idea if i am on the 3.4.5. Or whatever interval, so i lose the ability of knowing what i am actually doing melody wise, when i have not memorised a lick on that position. On the other hand, playing only intervals i feel like i can not see many frets ahead, i have to sort of take each note as they come along, but at least i know which note i am on and not just what scale shape.
It’s a little bit of both for me, depending on the context. If it’s faster rock stuff it’s shape based, where as more melodic blues material is interval based. Ultimately it because a life of what I want to hear though, rather than aiming for certain intervals. It is also visualised using triads and chord shapes so the caged system is super handy!!

Fantastic! Love it! Why would playing all four licks get one fired from a gig?
Thanks mate! 😂😂 well consecutively together in one solo it isn’t the most musical choice!
Stay tuned for a part 2 coming out this week.

Good stuff Troy - are you planning to cover repetitive licks in the other pentatonic boxes?
Thank you mate! Likely at some point! Thanks for checking this out
What model is the Gibson acoustic? It’s exactly the one I am looking for. Thanks 🙏
It’s an L-00.

by dismount to you mean resolve or end?
Just get out of the lick! Either way

nice but after 3:20.. those different options.. i cannot follow it that fast what you do there?
Try slowing it down in UA-cam’s settings. Very handy to work out parts that are too fast
@@troydownwardmusic oo thanks.. i didnt even knew that was possible
Like the licks too much on the reverb though. Just doesn't sound right with the reverb.
