  • Injuries and surgeries are rarely convenient. Patients often want surgery right away because they can’t do what they want to do because of the pain. They also don’t want to miss much time from work or school. In this Ask Dr. Geier video, I discuss return to work considerations for one of the most common operations in all of orthopedic surgery - partial meniscectomy for a meniscus tear.

    Jilin asks:
I am 24 years old. On October 1, I had a menisectomy surgery. I had a partial tear in lateral meniscus. After surgery, I can walk without any problem. How much time will it take me to recover fully and get back to work? I am working as a chef.
The meniscus is the shock-absorbing piece of cartilage between the femur and tibia. Often the patient with a meniscus tear complains of pain on either the medial (side closest to the midline of the body) or lateral (side away from the midline) side of the knee. He might notice locking or catching of the knee as well.
Surgery to trim out the torn portion of meniscus - partial meniscectomy - is the treatment for the majority of meniscus tears. Removing the torn portion helps to eliminate pain and allow return to full function. Many surgeons allow full weight-bearing, or at least weight-bearing as tolerated, right after surgery. Then the patient works to increase range of motion and strength over the next few weeks. Complete recovery, to the point where he is at maximum medical improvement, can take several months.
In this video, I discuss the recovery process after partial meniscectomy surgery, including return to work, school, jogging and more.
Please remember, while I appreciate your questions, I cannot and will not offer specific medical advice by email, online, on my show, or in the comments at the end of these posts. My responses are meant to provide general medical information and education. Please consult your physician or health care provider for your specific medical concerns.

Jumping in because reading youtube comments, post op, had me so down, and in total buyers remorse. I tore my lateral meniscus 10/22 - had surgery 9/23. In the time in-between, i figured the pain was from stress induced weight gain and being out of shape, on an old acl repair, so i began to workout 5 days a week. Lost 40 lbs in 11 months, strengthened my everything to better support my knee, and none of that ultimately helped. I finally went for the MRI, then surgery.
I am now just past 4 months post op and i feel fantastic. The first couple months were pretty rough, especially when reading all the comments of people being up and walking within a week......But here i am now, 18 weeks out and i am back to most physical exercising - hour long walks took me almost 3 months - going down hill can be rough, but up is amazing. I can skip, jog, do the running man, and zero pain. I do low impact workouts, pilates machine, weight training, fast long walks, 100+ squats a day and so on. I do have a new click i hear sometime , and at a certain degree, a click that i feel. I avoid pushing into that second click that i feel to avoid any arthritic type rubbing.
Looking back, zero buyers remorse for now. I feel almost back to, pre meniscus tear, normal. I cannot get fully into child's pose as i think my muscles are still tight from over a year of the torn meniscus limiting me.
I should also mention, my injury was not really painful. I lost range of motion past 90degrees and had major swelling. and stability loss. But no pain. My knee never locked up, and it only buckled a couple times from sloppy movements.
I hope this helps lifts someones spirits.

Well it's been about 3 months after my surgery and it has completely healed... no pain what so ever... I lift weights and ride my bike, do every exercise you can think of and literally no pain... So my advice would be for you to take it easy for 3 months and let it heal and trust me it will heal perfectly... If you push it, well you might have complications, so just take it easy and let 3 months go by and you will be absolutely fine...!!!

Just had Meniscus tear surgery 5 days ago and I learned more about my recovery from it on here than I did from my Surgeon. Your explanation on the time and level of recovery was comprehensive and very helpful. I have a very physical job that requires a lot of kneeling and bending so I will have a longer recovery getting back to my old self.

That’s how I feel.. I have Meniscus Tears in BOTH my knees and I just had my 1st surgery on 11/6/2023. My surgeon NEVER really explained details about the surgery, but was anxious about performing the surgery. He NEVER explained anything about the Cortisone Injections before he gave me my 1st shot, which I had side effects from it.

My 17 yr old son had meniscus tear surgery 7 weeks ago just prior to Thanksgiving. The surgery also involved slightly re-centering the knee cap/patella. He was not able to start walking until 2 weeks, then ditching crutches after 4 weeks. After 5 weeks he was able to remove the full leg brace and still has knee cap brace today. The swelling has gone down but he still has pain...especially after a PT session. While he is able to drive he's not able to do any type of high school job yet (fast food, cashier, etc.). I was hoping he would be further along with less pain but the physical therapist thinks he's about where he should be and even slightly ahead mobility and swelling-wise. I'm skeptical as he wants to play football next season.

I believe the sooner you start moving around and walking and doing PT the faster you heal. I take breaks whenever I drive from location to location. Thanks for the video👍

I wish I could put any weight on my leg after my meniscus surgery. I had a complex tear and I’ve been out of work for now 6 days, my Ortho gave me work excuse for a couple more days. I still can’t even straighten my knee fully yet have, been on crutches since day one. I still have swelling on the knee too. Yesterday I said, let me try to work, I work in an office and learned sitting for more than 10-15 min was making the leg swell up. I feel that my hamstring muscle was injured, not saying it shouldn’t feel this way but wow I certainly need more time, body asks for still putting up the leg and icing. Is this normal?

    Hello Doctor,
Your explanation was very informative and example oriented so one could easily relate and understand.
I've had a tear on anterior horn of lateral meniscus on my left knee 2 years ago while i was playing football. I had a partial meniscectomy and recovery period for me was about 3 weeks for getting back to my daily routine. And I was strong as ever in less than 70 days.
Now, again I had a tear this time on posterior of the lateral meniscus (same) of the left knee. Also had some issue with ACL and a lot of 'wear and tear' in that joint. Again had a partial meniscectomy but I was able to walk without support and bear weight the very next day of the surgery. Now it's almost a week post surgery and i'm recovering really fast, I don't have any pain, yes there is a bit of swelling and inflammation but I feel no pain and discomfort.

My doctor ordered an X-ray and that came back fine,so they did an MRI and I will go to a surgeon to know the results of that. Not really sure it’s my meniscus though. The pain is completely different. This knee seems to be fine until I’m on it for an extended amount of time and the it feels like it swells up and it gets really hard to bend it. Any ideas on what it might be??? I’m really concerned

I’m four weeks after a posterior medial root tear repair. My post-op was the very next day. I was told that I could bare full weight with zero degrees locked in on my knee brace and start flexing to 90 degrees the same day as my post-op and to ween myself off crutches in a week. Doing physical therapy twice a week and doing those exercises three times a day. My knee feels okay slight dull pain with some swelling, but nothing like the first three days. Is this common?

Was my ACL sergery the result of my meniscus tare. If so should I stop lifting waights and running after my meniscus surgery. If so how likely would it be for me to have a knee replacement.

Arthroscopy Knee, Partial Medial and Lateral Meniscectomy Repair - Left Knee Surgery on January 4, 2021. Thank GOD I had some type of knowledge about Physical Therapy Google and UA-cam played a BIG role. January 5th weight bearing and icing around the clock. On the 6th I started doing Heel slides up and down 15-25 times sets of 3 icing 20-25 minutes. ICE will become your best friend. Pushing myself harder and harder by the 7th I started doing more and more exercises and still icing around the clock. Today is January 11th and I would say 95% of the swelling is down walking great but at times still hurts. Surgery was a eye opener for me it put your state of mind in a completely different place. That was helpful. Had a meniscus surgery 10/19/2023, today is 10/21/2023. I took 1 Naproxen yesterday but have not really had any pain and if there is swelling, it's pretty minor. Two arthoscopic holes, they are dry. Basically sitting around, have walked a little bit here and there. Since it was my left knee, I've already driven a little - automatic only requiring my right foot to start and stop. I am 75; play a lot of golf but because of the meniscus tear from some years back, I don't put much leg/knee twists into my drives. I'm on schedule for some PT next week. Everybody is different, but how long before I return to the golf course where I hit 150 yr drives at the most. [ not very far ] with very minimal leg twist.

Hello. I just cancelled a meniscus arthroscopy at a hospital because
they insisted on inserting a breathing tube in my throat to administer
anesthesia in addition to the intravenous and local anesthesia. My
orthopedic doctor didn't think it was necessary at all, but the
anesthesiologist insisted upon it. It seemed like too much anesthesia
to me. I didn't want the pain, sore throat and nausea afterwards, so I
walked. I inquired of others about their meniscus surgery and no one
else had this thrust upon them except for one person who needed to use
his own cpap machine for sleep apnea. What do you think about this?

I've had 4 scopes and I'm looking at my 5th soon. My last one in 2014 was on a Thursday and I was back to work on Monday. Yes, I was limited but I was able to drive, walk and perform my duties. Prior to that in 1998 I had surgery on Saturday morning and I was on a stage that night (I'm a musician). It just depends on your tolerance but my advice is not to baby it. Try to get back into the swing of things quickly without over doing it. If you're comfortable using a cane that will help since using crutches gets your weight off the knee but it doesn't do anything to help get the range of motion back.

I'm extremely health-conscious and active and I wonder since you're on stage and you must be also, had you had sudden injuries after the first scopes? Or were they something that build up over time from the lack of cartilage and then you just couldn't stand it anymore and got a scope?

I can understand why it would seem that returning to a desk job within a few days after this surgery would be easy enough. However, although I have virtually no pain, I'm still unable to straighten my leg and the inability to keep the leg elevated during the day causes swelling for me to the point where it's very difficult to walk. I had the surgery 1 week ago today. Very fortunately, I have the freedom to work from home as necessary. Therefore I work either in my bed or on a chaise lounge or couch with my leg elevated. However, if I work at the computer table, my knee swells and my calf literally starts to cramp in the evening when trying to walk on it.

My first 3,meniscus surgeries recover was very quick. After the local wore off I was walking just like before the injuries.the whole process lasted 6-7 hrs. The problem with a meniscus tear there's a great chance it will tear again. I originally tore the right knee meniscus in 2007. Then re-tore this same meniscus & had repair surgeries in '19, '20 & '22. The only thing that happened was during a walk I'd suddenly feel a pop & the knee would begin aching & swelled a little. 3 months ago the very same happened again. I did some research as I was concerned if I could run out of meniscus & if so what happens next. So in the end of October I'm having the knee replaced. EVERYONE I've spoke with who'd had this surgery said they felt & were much better than before their first surgery. And I don't have to worry anymore of needing another meniscus surgery. The chance of tearing one's meniscus a second or third time is better than one probably wants to hear. This injury is painful and uncomfortable. Getting in & out of my car, dealing with staircases in my house, mowing the lawn, everything which wasn't a painful problem during tear 2, 3 & 4 is very at times painful. Plus the knee has swollen unlike any previous injury. (I just need to visit the surgeon & have him stick a needle in knee & pull the fluid out) FYI-This process isn't painful. Usually if one has meniscus surgery there's a good chance you'll need & want the fluid removed. Dr Enns is the surgeon. I've heard nothing but good things regarding him. FYI-He replaced Dr Chris Miller who moved out west to Pratt (I think that's where he moved to. He's still practicing surgery. Nick also moved with him. I've known both of them since 1999. He did 4 shoulder ligament repair, 4 meniscus meniscus surgeries & 2 knee surgery to remove fatty tissue that had gotten pinched in between knee caps.

Pain relieved after I was given Fentanyl injection. Before leaving surgery center I was able to stand with crutches. Went to bed with elevation and ice.
Day 2- Medication definitely wore off and woke up this AM with a good amount of sharp pain and swelling. Ice, elevation and taking Norco 5 every 5-6 hours is helping with pain but 2nd day pain and immobility seems slightly worse than the first. Surgeon is supposed to call me tomorrow and let me know exactly what was done. I’ll try and update with my progress.

i had this surgery done after a sports injury. walked out of the hospital no crutches although being careful. walking around the house the next day without trouble. walking up and down stairs in 2 days. i lifted some heavy stuff about one week after surger and knee puffed up the next day. then went back down the day after. went to see surgeon 10 days after surgery and he said there's nothing that will damage the knee by doing anything i did before includings sports (at 10 days). exercise as much as i can tolerate. i went to physio and he had me doing exercises to build up my quad. i was doing long(ish) walks 2km and it was fine, although leg felt fatigued afterwards. i was doing squate and lunges to build up strength, 5 minutes sessions about 3 times a week. leg would feel fatigued but no pain. did some short runs (20m - 30m) at 4 weeks. no problem, although i could feel my leg was not strong and i was favouring that leg a lot. 6 weeks, i started playing football (soccer) gingerly. running on grass was good. low impact and knee felt good. leg wasn't strong. can't stop, turn, step anywhere near as before. but ran 4km and no problem. leg was tired for a few days after. 7 weeks played again and felt better. doing regular walks, about 4 walks a week around 3km long. leg going good. still protecting it though.

@@MSI47LYF hey man. it's about as good as it can be. keep in mind i'm 42. but i play 2 hours of tennis on hardcourt every week and the knee holds up fine. it's no worse than before i injured it. some weeks i'll play a competitive game of basketball for my old team and that aggravates the knee. however i ice the knee as soon as i get home and it's painless the next day. i don't know how much is me being 42 and how much is because of the injury. but i can stop, turn, step change directions as good as before the injury. football on grass is not problem. i don't think about it and i don't particularly protect my knee and it's fine. like i said, with basketball, i do ice it. my initial injury wasn't a huge tear in the miniscus but it's bad enough to require surgery. a lot factors to consider. but overall, my knee is as good as it was before.

Can having a torn meniscus on both your knees affect you lower back? I've had this issue for a few years now.

+Abby Abster I suppose it could if it caused you to stand or walk differently.
