- Federal prosecutors and the SEC earlier this week charged seven Influencers with using Twitter, Discord and UA-cam to commit securities fraud that netted them more than $100 million.
An eighth influencer was charged with aiding and abetting the alleged scheme in the SEC’s civil complaint and with conspiracy to commit securities fraud in the Department of Justice’s criminal case.
Each of the defendants had well over 100,000 Twitter followers as of this month, they ran a podcast called "Pennies: Going In Raw" and a UA-cam channel called "Goblin Gang".

They seem to enjoy what they do whether it's little tidbits of finance news or full on scam analysis regarding finances, etc. As far as I can tell they are honest to the realities and share that with their viewers without asking for much in return. This is an outrageous example of how the power of social media can be abused. It is a reminder to the public to be mindful of the advice they receive from social media influencers, especially when it comes to investing. This is also a timely reminder of how easily people can be taken advantage of on social media. It's important to always be vigilant and do your own research before making investments-especially online.
I'd love to see some data on the profile of those that get sucked inside. i.e. every generation demands it's own music, it's own leaders, and social media is the new "vehicle". My guess is the damage is real: college money given by aunt Edna going to "get rich fast" and by-pass educ. for that car buy. And then turn 25 and have nothing to show.
