    Love to see that true Zwift spirit with the ride-ons when you overtook the competition! There is always a race going on - no matter what position we're in. All in good spirits

    You have exactly the right attitude while racing. Try to beat the guy in front of you. Who cares what overall place you are in. You are here to get/stay healthy and to have fun. However that manifests for you. Others have mentioned the bike selection, which will make you faster, but i'd like to add, if you keep at it, you will find you will get faster and you will have larger packs to compete against. Maybe even compete for a win in your category. Keep it up. You videos are great.

    "I'm not going to come first in every race but in every race I am winning!" what an absolutely legend quote!! I have done a couple Zwift Races and never one but have done the same many battles which I took seriously and improved myself with. Again as I said in the other video ( I just subbed and am binging the Zwift videos) you are inspirational good sir!!

    Very inspiring video. I love the spirit!
    Advice for your next race of this kind. Do not pick a TT bike because:
    -1) They are much heavier than regular road bikes and
    -2) You don't benefit from the draft effect. That's a HUGE penalty.
    Ride On! :D

    Good job! Good attitude!
    4 tips for you. The bike you used was a TT bike. Won't allow you to draft and they are heavy. Aero, but heavy and poor choice for racing in general except for TT races, but especially bad for you to go hilly stuff, like watopia KOM x 3 🙂
    2nd advice is to learn to use your weight to your advantage. Learn to get out of the saddle and stand up, almost like you're on a stair climber. Use your weight, not your legs. Higher resistance and lower cadence, like 60-65 rpm. In the beginning you'll manage 5-10 seconds but eventually you'll do a minute and that will make a huge difference. Not all out effort, just methodically "walk up the stairs" then sit and recover, then stand up again. Seated you have higher cadence. At least it made huge difference for me.
    3rd advice is to not do mass-start races as a new racer, then strong D's will piggyback on C and B for enough time to drop you.
    4th advice is to learn to have high intensity for the first 1-2 minutes, after that the races normally calms down.
    It's a C-D thing to go bananas in the start. B and even more so A's knows how pointless it is 🙂
    Keep it up! You'll be a C soon!

    • @RyanCondon

      This is great advice! Several points I didn't know or even think of.
      The bike for a starter, didnt know this was a bad choice.
      What bike would you recommend?
      Higher resistance, lower cadence didn't cross my mind, every video I've watched have said higher cadence is best.
      I'll now practice this!
      TBH I am aware how mental Cat D's are on the line. I've got quite good as catching them on the line but I burn too much energy doing so. I do not want to risk losing them and not being able to catch up.
      Thanks for the advice, you've given me food for thought!

      @repmortskcab8483 Рік тому

      @@RyanCondon most ppl go aero but looking at the bike speed tests, its only like 5-10 sec difference between a very aero bike and a more allrounder on a course of approx 50min according to eric schlanges bike and wheel tests. Im a light rider so depending on the course, I think 1. Where may I get dropped or 2. Where will I attack or 3 is the finish up, down or flat.
      Sitting in the draft I can have basically any bike. Also being a heavy rider, the bike weight is less of importance since the bike weight % vs body weight is much smaller than if you're a light rider.
      Secondly, mist cycling tips and training and racing recommendations are aimed at outdoor riding where races are many hours long and maybe on a tour where you race many days in a short period of time. Imho totally irrelevant for Zwift racing. So these high cadence recommendations at least doesn't work for me, unless I would race 5-6 days a week, then high cadence to allow better recovery would matter more. Outdoor riders will give you completely different advice than indoor specialists. If you watch YT races with many of the strongest A and A+ raiders you'll see they are on completely different cadence vs outdoor pros
      Zwift is more like BMX races 🙂

      My goto is Scott RC with Zipp858 which is a perfect allrounder for me with excellent climbing capability. If I want to go even more climb focused i use Enve 7.8 wheels. If I want to smash AdZ, I go Spezialized Crux with Milestein wheels.
      Sometimes gravel bikes are the best choice depending on the course

      Generally speaking, for most people, maintaining 90 RPM cadence will help your endurance and look after your knees. However it is a personally thing and some naturally ride lower cadences.
      One exception to this is riding out of the saddle on short steep climbs.
      Super inspiring video - keep up the good work.

    Good job, Ryan. Never give up! Every time you give up, it's easier to do it again the next time. Pretty soon you find yourself giving up at the smallest provocation. Other than an injury or feeling sick or whatever, there is no reason to give up on a race you started in the first place. And your minor victory is still a victory.

    Kudos on realizing you need to manage your expectations. I categorically don't do races on Zwift, but even "group rides" get treated by many riders as races in Zwift. At present, if I'm at sea level, I can do a bit over 4w/kg for an hour effort, but in the back end of my forties, I can no longer do so day in and day out. I need an easier day or two in-between any full-out efforts. So . . . I'll pick a group ride and know that I'm going to ride it at a much easier level (3.2 w/kg for example) and I'll count the participants, typically aiming to be around 20th out of 100 at that pace. Sometimes it's in the teens, other times it ends up being in the 30's. Point being, you're well advised to stick to your own riding plan.

    • @RyanCondon
      @RyanCondon  Рік тому

      It's general good advice for life. Even the elites have to manage their expectations sometimes, can't break records every race.
      I prefer racing to social rides as I get beat in both and as you say, many treat socials as races anyway. Good luck on your future rides and thanks for the comment. 🙌

    Another excellent video 👌
    Exactly the right attitude, I reckon. Pick a target and go for it, and if you miss it, adjust your target and tackle that one, as many times as you need to. And that was a really strong performance, picking off that rider and keeping ahead of them. Closing a gap of that size is amazing. Really strong stuff.
    If you aren't already, try to work on getting recovery in during the race. It used to feel to me like you had to keep pedalling and pushing the whole time, but if you can sit in with the bunch, you can get short stretches where you can completely stop pedalling and coast for a while. Use the draft and terrain to ease off for a bit. Even bursts of just a second or two can add up.

    • @RyanCondon
      @RyanCondon  Рік тому

      Great advice Lee, I have recently learnt the benefit of draft-resting as you've described it. I did have the mindset to go as hard as poss but recently I caught a lone rider miles ahead by working with another rider in the draft and it was an eye opener how much further doing that got me with the same effort.
      TBH this race was a bad choice for me, it was a mixed start and everyone went off mental on the start line just before that mental reverse KOM. To maintain that pace I would have had to hit the hill doing in excess of 500watts. Crazy!
      Thanks for the comment and the advice 😀

    Great stuff, love the approach and that’s how I learned tactics and by the time you’re improving to the top of your category and contesting for the higher places you already have the experience of knowing what to do and work against opponents - so it helps with fitness and makes you a better racer! Really enjoy the style of videos you’re making, the edits and music are awesome. No easy way out is also my favourite Rocky song.
    I think a few others have noted, for for clarity TT bikes in Zwift do not receive any draft benefit at all, but others can draft you. So when you caught Elsdon you didn’t get the advantage of drafting him at all, and this also without doubt meant you got dropped from the main pack much earlier than you would have earlier. Everyone in that main pack would’ve been getting draft except you.
    This only applies to TT bikes, any other kind of bike receives draft but has minor advantages. Ie climbing bikes are a few seconds quicker than aero on the climbs, but aero are a few seconds fast than climbing bikes on the flat. However TT bike is minutes slower than all of them in a race setting. Only time TT bike is worth picking is if you are riding solo not intending to draft anyone, ie in a TT. Hope that makes sense…

    Great attitude to have! This is something I have struggled with at times, putting too much pressure on myself and not enjoying it if I didn’t get a good result when sometimes I was just up against some very strong riders.
    And as others have said, if you weren’t on a TT bike you would have been much further up the results.
