What I know of as a sugar cream pie is different than what you had pictured. I grew up in Indiana, and to me what you had pictured I know of as an “old fashioned sugar cream pie.” No Thanksgiving, Christmas, or family reunion is complete without an old fashioned sugar cream pie.
I have never had a dense old fashioned sugar cream pie. The version you had is not representative of what I grew up with. It should not have any cheesecake quality.
It is more of a custard based pie, with a lot of sugar.

14:11 When you say that horseradish loses its punch quickly, just like wasabi does, it reminds me of a video I watched the other day that claims in USA only 1% of our "wasabi" is real wasabi. And supposedly only 5% in Japan is real wasabi. So 99% of wasabi sold and served in USA is actually horseradish. Same plant family as wasabi, but obviously an exponentially cheaper and easier to source plant than real wasabi. I already knew there was almost no real wasabi here. But their claimed number was even worse than I thought.
That video was "11 Of The Most Faked Foods In The World" on "Insider Business" UA-cam channel.

It's important to note on Sugar Cream Pie, that it originated as a staple dessert in Indiana because it could be made with ingredients that would keep for extended periods of time. Settlers moving west wouldn't have access to alot of 'fancier' materials. The cool thing about the Sugar Cream Pie is that in many ways, its still the same recipie that was used by western settlers to the region over 200 years ago!

No one living outside the "City " would rèfer to it as a Hoosier Pie. You need to explore Wicks Pies in Winchester Indiana to get a better understanding. The Hoosier pie is actually called sugar cream pie. It is actually served at Lucas oil Stadium, where the Indianapolis Colts play. I don’t know anybody growing up where I did in the state of Indiana and all around me who didn’t know a sugar cream pie. Wicks, sugar, cream pie, which you can find and almost every Walmart in the state of Indiana it’s actually made by a local pie company in the state of Indiana. My sister-in-law was from the region and had never heard of sugar cream pie. We took to one Thanksgiving with her family, and now that is their absolute favorite pie. I have never known a person who tasteed sugar cream pie, hot sugar, cream pie and love it. People relatives live in other states for them to be shipped to them. I would try another cream pie and FYI, cream pie is the state pie for Indiana. actually, I was watching a talkshow a few years ago and they were doing state competition of local food. They put the sugar cream pie from Indiana up against the Keylime pie from Florida and guess what the sugar cream pie one every hose out of all five of them picked the sugar cream pie, and this is a major, talkshow done on a major network.

I like Ireas Eye-Talian on S College - way Old Skool, could be in any large, Northern American city. Also, Caplingers fish monger. Try their calamari fries. A hard core crave of mine. Best at the AMP.
Don't forget Good Morning Mama's on 54th in SoBro - best funky urban breakfast joint in Indianapolis.

This was the first time I heard of the Workingmans Friend as having ‘ambiance’. 😂 I love the hamburgers, wobbly tables and chairs and the fishbowl-size beers. As for St Elmos, it’s a great place for people watching while you’re eating a very fine steak.

Sugar cream pie is definitely a custard pie, most of my family has them every holiday, not my favorite though. The tenderloin sandwich I eat often. We even have the Lapel Tenderloin named after our town at the local restaurant.

I agree. I just don't like traditional Hoosier food. No offense, I was born and raised there, but once I ventured out and discovered new and delicious types of foods I realized just how "downhome midwestern" the food there is. I rarely go out to eat when I'm there because I can't find anything I like. Having said that, I used to bartend at the Ale Emporium and their food is pretty good. Their pizza is on point!
