I'm thankful for the birds and lizards on my property, they help keep my garden pest free
Going to try this next. A solution of crushed garlic and water sprayed on and around roll up bugs deters them. Make a homemade pill bug spray by combining one tablespoon of crushed garlic with a quart of water. Spray the solution on the pests and in areas where you see them. Garlic spray works well to get rid of pill bugs organically.
I call 'em Rolie Polies here in NC USA :) Sadly, my chickens won't touch them. I've tried all those methods and they work but are high maintenance or expense so I lay boards around in the garden. I had a bunch of 4" wide panel boards from a house renovation and they fit perfectly between rows of vegetables. The moisture underneath attracts all the above PLUS slugs! I have a bucket of water, lift the board and scrape the bottom of it into the bucket. I haven't tried them in the cruciferous bed yet but will this year in hopes of trapping the cabbage loopers :)
I feel your pain...keep up the fight!
I had success avoiding cabbage moth by covering brassicas with picnic plate tent or tulle. Had lots of trouble last few years, but pill bugs are the devil this year. Will be trying the board and scrape method
Going to give the board method a try! I’ve been using potatoes but is high maintenance.
I found if I plant catnip out away from my cabbages etc the cabbage looper butter fly/moths are attracted to it and will lay their eggs there, I put a water dish by it for them and they leave my cabbage alone, if some do wonder into my braccia I pick them by hand and either squish their heads or drop them in a bucket of soapy water
Please send them to me, I collect them lol
I cut the bottom of a small plastic cup or container and put around of my new planted crops like a border and the roly-polies cannot enter or climb in my new plants. It works.
Does this work for pincher bugs too, do you know?
Putting dried leaves on my garden last fall is what got me into this mess! They loves eating them then multiplied and are eating my vegetables and had eaten all my small seeds I direct sowed. Had to grow them in pots first now my vegetables are getting eaten as soon as they ripen and some before that
Same
same 😩
I have a huge infestation this year and while I haven't found a successful way to get rid of them I found that putting collars around my seedlings is the best thing I can do. It keeps them away from the plant so it can grow.
I teach gardening at a private high school and every year my seedlings get ravaged by pill bugs in our growing dome. The only method I’ve found that works is adding in organic material to the soil. I’ve seen a method of burying small cups of beer into the soil, which I’m hesitant to try because of curious teenagers. Diatomaceous earth does not work for me because the dome has an average 80% humidity level so it’s never really dry. I’ve set up traps by cutting plastic cups and placing duct tape (sticky side up) under them so when they go to shelter under the cup they stick to the tape, but even that doesn’t work great. I’ll definitely try the fruit method though. It’s a never ending battle for me.
I'm going to be doing another video soon (maybe on Instagram) I have completely switched over to paper sticky traps and it has made all the difference. I use these: amzn.to/4cAcloj
@@WineberryHill Good to see the new stuff is non-toxic. The Neem brand you link to here in the description box, however, has toxic ingredients in the "inert ingredients", thus the requirement to register with the EPA and have an EPA registration number. Try to find and organic one that is cold pressed.
Good Episode!
Thanks for watching!
I like your smart handling method
A trap of 1 tsp borax soap, 3 tsp sugar dissolved in warm water and placed level with the soil can catch a lot of them as well
I love that your chickens find them tasty!
The Rolly Pollies eat the dog poop in our yard.😁
I am running my own experiment in my greenhouse to control Slaters (NZ term) using sheep's wool as mulch (we have sheep so its a free resource). I soaked the wool then covered the raised garden in a thin layer. The Slaters disappeared quickly, this am I don't see any around the plants. Will keep you posted on the result. I also use sheep's wool around my fruit trees.
How cool, yes please...keep us posted!
Orange slice method, but use a shopvac on the slice as well as the soil beneath.
iv'e been working with rabbit compost for several years and have'nt had a big problem till this season. this season so far has been quite the challenge. thank you for sharing your experiance.
I use a lot of fish fertilizer with kelp, my tomatoes took off after I started feeding with the seaweed. My studies indicate insects don't like eating plants fed with kelp.
@@heavymechanic2i actually think my fish fertilizer is attracting the earwigs.
Sluggo Plus seems to do wonders for most bugs on my property! :)
You mentioned green beans, the slugs like them too. I use slug bait and sluggo plus has an organic additive that gets rid of other problems attacking young seedlings. Just a light sprinkle around your plants makes a huge difference in controlling pest problems.
Great tip!
Which one has worked better for you for rolly pollies?
Great info! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! I'd add beneficial nematodes for more control without the use of chemicals. Different nematodes will work on different insects, so purchase accordingly.
Great tip!
""Crunchy bats. My favorite!!" - 🐔
Super helpful thank you very much 😀😀😀
Glad it helped!
Just like fruit place a cup of beer at ground level and find them in the morning. Also put an old carton and they will look for the moisture at night then you catch them in the morning.
Great tips!
I read iron sulfate works on earwigs
In Philippines it's called:baboy baboyan
In my chilhood years I read, that large slices of potatoes should attract them.
Are all these methods safe for inside the house?
I'm using a baking soda spray.
For using the DE and the Neem Oil: do I use only at the base of the plant or all over? Lost ally green beans this round, several heads of lettuces and a kale, basil and marigold! Insecticidal soap spray took care of the aphids on the lettuces but seemed to invite everything else in. I've resorted to just putting up with them n trying to start some more seeds for beans n herbs. This has been a rough year. Looking for all the advice n tips I can get
Aaargh! I feel your pain. Neem is considered safe to use all over. Just wait a day or so to consume plants you sprayed with it. Keep experimenting, and don't give up!
@@WineberryHill no plans on that. Actually looking to expand
Great video! But currently I’m dealing with gnats and white fly any ideas? Trying to be none chemical, I have citrus trees also, and the the honey bees are coming in during the day when the vents are open.
Yep, Neem will knock them out fast. Here is a link...Neem Oil: amzn.to/3Eh34lq
@@WineberryHill thanks 😊
You can try mosquito bits, it kills gnat larvae/mosquitos but doesn’t harm other insects
I have so many bugs at night they resemble a moving carpet. My flowers are suffering terribly.
Sorry to hear that, try slices of watermelon or cantaloupe....clean it off at night when they really come out.
@@WineberryHill Was going to try NEEM Oil first. Have 1/2 gallon of the stuff...
Holy cow…!
Collect and sell to owners of mossariums, florariums, terrariums for big money :)
In Danish it's called bænkebidere, directly translated to bench biter 😅
Stick some adhesive tape to their route so they will stick to it
These mf have killed all my green beans, it is crazy. Other things have been damaged but they immediately kill any green beans
Yup, they love green beans
Same. Never had a real issue with them before this year but they've wiped out my whole crop of bean seedlings. I dont just garden for fun i need my crops for my freezer so I'm pretty ticked. Especially because i purchased a new variety that was a bit more expensive and it took 3 weeks to ship to me. Grrr
I feel you. I'm on my fourth round of green beans. They destroyed two rounds of seeds and one round of seedlings. I"m going to try growing the seedlings on a bit longer before putting them out. And using these methods.
I used to call them watermelon bugs.
chickens do not eat millipedes...have thousands here and chickens walk right by them because the pedes put out a smelly odor
Same problem with green beans. I am so done with them
I feel your pain!
@@WineberryHill something to share. After transplant, it's sometimes nearly impossible to put up a plastic cup barrier around the plant. I used aluminum foil around the stem and the surrounding soil. Looks like it worked. I did everything prior without success. You name it... Soap+oil wash, peppermint scent, used dried oyster sea shells (to somehow mimic diatomaceous earth)... Nothing worked.
Cersamthym "oil"... Kills tons of different bugs!!!
They are excellent little creatures, without them half of your compost wouldn't break down. If you have a compost in your garden they'll all go and hang around there......
No they will not "all" go there. I have enough to occupy my compost bin and also my 4 raised beds. They eat all of my seedlings and more. Are they great? Sure. Are they destructive? Yes.
Not in my experience, ravaging EVERYTHING I've planted several times this spring despite DE, beer traps, potatoes and orange halves.....
Woodlice seems to be the general term for them across the uk here.
They’re Annoying little *£=£#&,r/s lol
I just want them out of my apartment that was an old house and is now 3 apartments (built in the early 1900s)
Maybe you could try sticky traps, like these: amzn.to/3P0QAmB
Mokritsa
BEER
you know pill bugs are not bugs
interesting!
I will never eat chicken again😁😁
Why would you want to kill these insects...they do great work.
Because of the old adage, "Too much of a good thing..." They can build up in such numbers that they can wipe out young green bean plants in a day or two.
@@WineberryHill mmm thought they only are dead wood
.?
I wish, they actually prefer tender seedlings before anything. They will eat nearly any type of vegetation...alive and dead.
In one NIGHT... 😢
How Tf did they get in my house plants tho 😭😭😭😭
They find a way!
