the animation is nice but the visuals honestly give off roblox vibes and its a bit distracting. dont see a point in replacing the voice acting either, does not sound very good to me
Yeah I agree. I can really appreciate the work put into it though and the animations are great, but I find it weird having the characters going faster than they're meant to, sometimes breaking the stage more and making you see out of bounds so often
Yeah don’t get me wrong I like the speed the characters go and the new models which look amazing but the rest of the areas give a Roblox vibe. Although changing all textures and all models would be a huge task for a small group doing this for free. Depending on how much they can change they could add extra building meshes in parts of the map to fix the out of bounds issues.
It’s in the title. This is what sonic adventure 2 could have looked like if it was released now. It’s not a remake more of a small reimagining. Also I don’t see the problem with the voice acting, everyone did an amazing job
This project is a mod for the original game (Steam release) and aims to mimic an early Xbox 360 game (low poly was still the style in 2005). There’s nothing more I can do with the visuals. It’s only diffuse textures on the Dreamcast. I’m also not sure how this is distracting when anyone can play the game just fine?
@@TheeMentorDex im not trying to discredit the work thats gone into this at all, it's more of an observation than critcism (minus the voice acting, I just think it sounds strange personally but thats pretty subjective) I think its impressive that youve done as much as you have. I just think its sort of like the GTA trilogy remasters where you take the original assets and modify them a little while still obviously working with a very outdated engine which can and will give off some uncanny vibes. I think the movement tweaks youve added look super fun though, I dont really mess around with sa2 mods but I might try this one out just for the movement alone. Ultimately what I said isnt really something you can do something about without just creating a whole new game, so Im not trying to insinuate youve done anything wrong. Infact its very impressive, especially again, the animation.
you guys knocked it out of the park!! the character models look smooth and great, and dry lagoon looks unrecognizable!! even tails has a new model!! my only complaint is that speed characters move too fast in this build and stages feel a bit small because of it, like the start to green forest i.e. but overall, such a fresh take on sa2, love it!!
Appreciate the support! You only go this fast if you want to. Spindash to go fast or run down a slope and maintain your velocity. The top speed is now only slighter higher than vanilla SA2’s. In older builds, the speed was insane and uncontrollable. We also have dynamic FOV and subtle camera shake, so the faster you run, the higher the FOV. Naturally, I’m going fast cuz I’m a chad 💪🏼 😂
That rendition of final chase was some of the most exhilarating and epic level design I've seen from a sonic game. So many paths and freedom of choice on how to traverse the stage, the epic ost rendition, loved every second. Not only that but the level design feels like it's something that could've actually been in the base game, you clearly understand the design philosophy and nuances of adventure 2. You've really outdone yourself. Awesome mod! Very talented.
Honestly this has been the most fun, I've had with the SA2 stages. This one mod actually clears up the main issue, I have with them. And it's that sense of freedom of movement.
Cant wait to see more with this mod! It looks better and better with every update! I'm especially excited for all the level design changes, they look to do a great job adding replayability to previously pretty linear stages
Lowkey looking pretty dang smooth, and the little additions look like theyll be great for a faster flowing experience. Hope we get full customization with this, like render distance and the ability to revert audio. You can tell some maps arent made to be seen from such a far distance, and it greatly shows its age, that aside the restoration like this looks great, my only real gripe is the small additions to music and voice acting...
This looks absolutely beautiful! The squash and stretch is amazing, alongside all the flips and stylish flair for each character. The new VAs sound incredible too! I'm kinda jealous we don't get this exact scale in the mainline Sonic games. A change I feel like isn't getting appreciated enough is not losing every ring you have if you get hit. No longer need flawless runs for an A rank!

This means you’re now forced to hit a lotta enemies, collect a ton of rings, break boxes and get items to max out your points AND get to the goal in a reasonably fast time! If you ever play this project in the future, you’ll see how you no longer get A Ranks easily.
Honestly. I really like this! And idk why the fans are clowning on the voice acting, they are doing just fine as it is. As a VA myself, i can understand the struggles they must be having (especially since im good friends with the Sonic VA, and work with him) so i think the fans need to gives these voices a chance! Keep up the great work!
I haven’t seen this mod in a long while but I really like the new animations and custom voicework giving the mod its own identity and they all fit the characters like a glove so far, can’t wait to see the rest of them

25:52 Wait, I've just noticed, when you lose rings in this mod, they aren't taking them all.. THIS IS BRILLIANT!! The thing that I hated the most about the early 3D Sonic games is the fact that no matter how high or low your ring count is, it will reset to zero once being hit (just like the classic games), sure you collect them back, but only 20 maximum, and that sucks, aspecially when your trying to do does 100 rings missions in both SA2 and Heroes.
I adore this mod, oh my stars you did such an incredible job! It straight up looks like Sonic 06 graphics, but better! I don't get what people are saying with the new voice lines, I actually rather like them. Especially Rouge and Shadow! And the plap of Sonic's feet when he runs is genuinely hilarious and honestly a nice touch. Gonna download this as soon as I possibly can, can't wait to relive my childhood in the best way possible!!!
6 years... this project has been going on for 6 years... there have been so many advancements in SA2 modding within that timegap. From the Chao world, to the character models being replacable and now to the insane stuff we have now! Huge props to you and the team, Dex! Don't forget to take your time with the project, as well as your other projects.
This project is nothing short of amazing. Love the updates to the old satges of SA2. While I do feel the models are a bit too shiny they are not bad at all. The Voice acting is a great touch specially because it could mean a possible faithful recreation of the original story that the english translation kind of butchered. All in all, this is fucking sick. Downloading this as soon as I figure out how to make my control work with SA2

So for me its more of the voice is going for a hybrid of Ryan Drummond and Jun'ichi Kanemaru (English and Japanese va for SA2), the lines mesh well with each other but not the voices so much, thats just me. As for everything else, idk why people are bashing the mod. they are acting like its final, instead of improvments being able to be made down the line. in my opinion, it's a great mod with a lot of charisma and heart put into it. Sure, lighting can be fixed, and some things here and there, but the mod is doing great! People just gotta 'Live and Learn'!
Not sure if it was intentional, but Radical Highway has some subtle storytelling in it and its so aghhhh😍😍😍 Like the hot air balloons, advertisements, and other objects are Shadow's subconscious trying to piece together his situation and his little amnesia he's got. Intentional or not, it makes it sooo much more cool😍😍

I like the impression of sonic very much. It sounds like a fusion of Ryan Drummond and Jun'ichi Kanemaru. The overall attitude and pitch of jun'ichi and the slight cheesiness of Ryan. The perfect combination, IMO
Also what feels so good about SA2 is that the game wasnt that paused in pace. You went level after lever in story mode, without the need to choose the next level like in SonicxShadow Generations. And the variations in characters levels didnt make you feel so easily bored.
Please do a model viewing because i am most interested in looking at the characters in a 360 setting. Still great job on this and i am excited fo try some day. ❤
I fucking love the idea of in this hypothetical remake in the series they whould have Ryan voice sonic and have Jason as Shadow in the same game absolutely brilliant.
these stage edits are awesome, but i think the purple rails on final chase at the beginning should utilize more verticle rail launching, like the verticle rail blocks in final rush. where if you have enough momentum, you can jump off of them and get insane height. final rush also had a few that were diagonal/sideways that were essentially used as platforms rather than flat ground, making it way scarier and riskier. that and maybe verticle walls/platforms that you have to navigate or jump around. upper path should be hardest, not easiest. awesome work!
Cool improvements of Metal Harbor (now we can have run on a coast), City Escape (has playground, a lot of decorations like Gens), Radical Highway/Green Forest/Final Rush/Final Chase have new shortcuts but modernized as well too. Would be awesome if stage length were like Heroes/Shadow/2006 which will make SA2 the best adventure game in 2024, besides SADX. Really loving your work, Dex.😮😊🎉 P.S. : i got a weird idea which could work - why don't you put Cannon Core/Cosmic Wall/Eternal Engine sections with gates, bridges into Final Rush/Chase so it would give resemblance of SonXShad Gens
Honestly, I liked basically everything, especially the animations for the victory poses. [though some clipping may need some fixing on some] The new VA's are doing really good close impressions of the of SA2 characters too, which I love. Doesn't feel like the VA's are trying to match their modern counterparts, and instead going right for that older style. Even the voice acting feels like it has that slight muffle the old voicework kinda had...that or I'm just imagining things. Still though, fantastic stuff! I think my only major critique is that intro for Metal harbor. I assume it's similar to that grind rail at the top of the early turn in City Escape, and, maybe the Metal harbor land areas were a concept that never made it into the level...but as it is here, for some reason I felt extremely lost, even in the video. Just kinda wondering where I would've been supposed to go. Maybe it can be reworked to direct the player more, or something else, but I do prefer the old 'dropped into a downward slope' from the original. [that and it felt trippy to see land at all, but maybe that's just something to get used to] But everything else was really fun to see, great work!
With the update to the game's shadows, if there's a way to add highlights on top, I'd massively recommend looking into it. Something felt missing the entire time watching and I think once I got to the Chao Garden at the end, I realise it was some lighting highlights on the characters/environments themselves. Is there a way to do baked highlights on the environments based on where the sun is and then realtime on the characters? (I think Sonic Unleashed used this exact method actually, which is very 360 era.) Yeah, visually, that's all that's missing atm that I reckon will bump this up massively. It's looking pretty interesting though. Keep at it guys; looking forward to seeing more progress.
Ahh, you’re on about specular. The SA2 ports broke specular lighting, hence the flat look on enemies, objects and characters. I could add a subtle highlight to my falloff environment map textures. However, it won’t match the light direction. Best to wait until Shaddatic has this restored in Render Fix.
Big fan of how the levels look in this mod. I will say though, the water effect in Metal Harbor was really messing with my eyes and making me feel ill.
To all the people complaining about the running speeds; cry about it. The higher speeds allow for higher skill expression, since you have to react faster... besides. If you don't like going *fast* in a SONIC game?? something's wrong with you.
Faster speeds = higher skill level if implemented correctly. In MSA2’s case, we balanced it out for what we currently have. So for players who don’t spindash to go fast, they can take the easier routes. Alternate paths require higher speed & skill to navigate and offer a more satisfying gameplay experience/flow. I’m dropping the top running speed down from 6.6 to 5.18 so players will be running just slightly over the max speed SA2 lets you sprint at (5.02) to balance out the restored slope physics.

But people who play Sonic games generally replay them over and over again, to enjoy the game play and get the best time that they can. Besides. As the mod author posted, you can have vanilla speeds still. The higher speeds are simply an option.. you even read the description?

the more I see the better. My only grip is sonic's victory animation looks janky and cut quick ( for me, at least) shadow's animation definitely improved significantly. I feel like sonic just needs more movement into it. but overall, I'm enjoying each version! Keep up the excellent work!
(hi mentor dex is me from the skulls stream probably you already forgot lol but anyways) i just want to give some feedback: the new paths made for the stages are amazing but i think you should focus mode on plataforming than speed like the new path with lightspeed dash with shadow in 4:06 because the trick ramps made some unfair deaths because of the speed maybe focusing in more open areas to make the shortcuts like green forest or final chase (omg final chase in this update is godly) so thats my criticsm (use more shortcuts with light speed with shadow because he didnt used in the base game besides we knowing he has this ability) and make more open shortcuts like in green forest or focused more on plataforming than speed, because the trick ramps are a little broken because of the higher speed so light speed dash would be a great solution for shortcuts with shadow. Oh now i am curious you gonna remake the last story too and the cutscenes? Or it will be handraw cutscenes like with sonic forces overclock team? Or making a modern playable super sonic or super shadow in the stages like in P-06? But overall that is now the definitive way to play SA2.
I need sega to see this, I think like you can feel the speed better here than with the boost dynamics. It would be cool if they returned to the Sonic Adventure formulas.

Absolutely phenomal here work , but there's one thing i gotta ask before i commit to a download , youve said you can switch between assets of vanilla and modded (like the models themselves ) does this apply to voices too ? Id love to play this , but not if i cant hear the original voice actors.
That wasn’t said anywhere 😂 There’s only two options in the mod’s config so far: 1) MSA2 Soundtrack or Remastered SA2 OST 2) MSA2 models or Faithfully Recreated SA2 models

All good. Ideally I’d have ported the vanilla models. Rigging them with moving fingers is a right pain, so figured sculpting the main models would suffice. This is a concept mod, so even I wouldn’t recommend using it as a “must have” mod, but more of “let’s see what this is about”, if that makes sense? You’re looking too much into that emoji. I found it funny as this was never said anywhere. I wasn’t being cocky and I’m not sure how I even came across like that.

The animation work is exceptional. Love the use of physics bones on the characters' heads, it really adds so much character to their motion.

So for me its more of the voice is going for a hybrid of Ryan Drummond and Jun'ichi Kanemaru (English and Japanese va for SA2), the lines mesh well with each other but not the voices so much, thats just me. As for everything else, idk why people are bashing the mod. they are acting like its final, instead of improvments being able to be made down the line. in my opinion, it's a great mod with a lot of charisma and heart put into it. Sure, lighting can be fixed, and some things here and there, but the mod is doing great! People just gotta 'Live and Learn'!
I don't know. After learning that it's the lead dev calling his own work "peak" I think the "hate" (A.K.A opinions you disagree with) is justified.

Shadows skating animation is by far better than what SEGAs given shadow in recent years. It's genuinely beautiful!
Not sure if it was intentional, but Radical Highway has some subtle storytelling in it and its so aghhhh😍😍😍 Like the hot air balloons, advertisements, and other objects are Shadow's subconscious trying to piece together his situation and his little amnesia he's got. Intentional or not, it makes it sooo much more cool😍😍

I like the impression of sonic very much. It sounds like a fusion of Ryan Drummond and Jun'ichi Kanemaru. The overall attitude and pitch of jun'ichi and the slight cheesiness of Ryan. The perfect combination, IMO
Running animations and jumps are smooth af. Love they added the steps sfx
Also what feels so good about SA2 is that the game wasnt that paused in pace. You went level after lever in story mode, without the need to choose the next level like in SonicxShadow Generations. And the variations in characters levels didnt make you feel so easily bored.

I fucking love the idea of in this hypothetical remake in the series they whould have Ryan voice sonic and have Jason as Shadow in the same game absolutely brilliant.
Yo Shadows run looks great, it looks weird in most games but this rest captures the right mix of speed and skating flow.
these stage edits are awesome, but i think the purple rails on final chase at the beginning should utilize more verticle rail launching, like the verticle rail blocks in final rush. where if you have enough momentum, you can jump off of them and get insane height. final rush also had a few that were diagonal/sideways that were essentially used as platforms rather than flat ground, making it way scarier and riskier. that and maybe verticle walls/platforms that you have to navigate or jump around. upper path should be hardest, not easiest. awesome work!

Cool improvements of Metal Harbor (now we can have run on a coast), City Escape (has playground, a lot of decorations like Gens), Radical Highway/Green Forest/Final Rush/Final Chase have new shortcuts but modernized as well too. Would be awesome if stage length were like Heroes/Shadow/2006 which will make SA2 the best adventure game in 2024, besides SADX. Really loving your work, Dex.😮😊🎉
P.S. : i got a weird idea which could work - why don't you put Cannon Core/Cosmic Wall/Eternal Engine sections with gates, bridges into Final Rush/Chase so it would give resemblance of SonXShad Gens

Honestly, I liked basically everything, especially the animations for the victory poses. [though some clipping may need some fixing on some]
The new VA's are doing really good close impressions of the of SA2 characters too, which I love. Doesn't feel like the VA's are trying to match their modern counterparts, and instead going right for that older style. Even the voice acting feels like it has that slight muffle the old voicework kinda had...that or I'm just imagining things. Still though, fantastic stuff!
I think my only major critique is that intro for Metal harbor. I assume it's similar to that grind rail at the top of the early turn in City Escape, and, maybe the Metal harbor land areas were a concept that never made it into the level...but as it is here, for some reason I felt extremely lost, even in the video. Just kinda wondering where I would've been supposed to go.
Maybe it can be reworked to direct the player more, or something else, but I do prefer the old 'dropped into a downward slope' from the original. [that and it felt trippy to see land at all, but maybe that's just something to get used to]
But everything else was really fun to see, great work!

With the update to the game's shadows, if there's a way to add highlights on top, I'd massively recommend looking into it. Something felt missing the entire time watching and I think once I got to the Chao Garden at the end, I realise it was some lighting highlights on the characters/environments themselves.
Is there a way to do baked highlights on the environments based on where the sun is and then realtime on the characters? (I think Sonic Unleashed used this exact method actually, which is very 360 era.) Yeah, visually, that's all that's missing atm that I reckon will bump this up massively.

Ahh, you’re on about specular. The SA2 ports broke specular lighting, hence the flat look on enemies, objects and characters. I could add a subtle highlight to my falloff environment map textures. However, it won’t match the light direction. Best to wait until Shaddatic has this restored in Render Fix.

To all the people complaining about the running speeds; cry about it. The higher speeds allow for higher skill expression, since you have to react faster... besides. If you don't like going *fast* in a SONIC game?? something's wrong with you.
I’m not against it, but higher speed does not equal “higher skill expression” or that the game is “better”.
Faster speeds = higher skill level if implemented correctly. In MSA2’s case, we balanced it out for what we currently have.
So for players who don’t spindash to go fast, they can take the easier routes. Alternate paths require higher speed & skill to navigate and offer a more satisfying gameplay experience/flow.
I’m dropping the top running speed down from 6.6 to 5.18 so players will be running just slightly over the max speed SA2 lets you sprint at (5.02) to balance out the restored slope physics.
@@oreomerchant6600 Never said the game was "better" due to higher speeds. But people who play Sonic games generally replay them over and over again, to enjoy the game play and get the best time that they can.
Besides. As the mod author posted, you can have vanilla speeds still. The higher speeds are simply an option.. you even read the description?
@@murasame_VA you’re phrasing makes it seem very obvious that you think it’s better, and also, I wasn’t against it. Some people may think the higher speed is worse, and it being a sonic game doesn’t mean that it has to be really fast to be good.

the more I see the better. My only grip is sonic's victory animation looks janky and cut quick ( for me, at least) shadow's animation definitely improved significantly. I feel like sonic just needs more movement into it. but overall, I'm enjoying each version! Keep up the excellent work!

(hi mentor dex is me from the skulls stream probably you already forgot lol but anyways) i just want to give some feedback: the new paths made for the stages are amazing but i think you should focus mode on plataforming than speed like the new path with lightspeed dash with shadow in 4:06 because the trick ramps made some unfair deaths because of the speed maybe focusing in more open areas to make the shortcuts like green forest or final chase (omg final chase in this update is godly) so thats my criticsm (use more shortcuts with light speed with shadow because he didnt used in the base game besides we knowing he has this ability) and make more open shortcuts like in green forest or focused more on plataforming than speed, because the trick ramps are a little broken because of the higher speed so light speed dash would be a great solution for shortcuts with shadow. Oh now i am curious you gonna remake the last story too and the cutscenes? Or it will be handraw cutscenes like with sonic forces overclock team? Or making a modern playable super sonic or super shadow in the stages like in P-06? But overall that is now the definitive way to play SA2.

MSA2 allows you to hold X to go faster. Similar to Heroes, Shadow and 06 with tapping X rapidly to flip and go faster

There’s only two options in the mod’s config so far:
1) MSA2 Soundtrack or Remastered SA2 OST
2) MSA2 models or Faithfully Recreated SA2 models

All good. Ideally I’d have ported the vanilla models. Rigging them with moving fingers is a right pain, so figured sculpting the main models would suffice. This is a concept mod, so even I wouldn’t recommend using it as a “must have” mod, but more of “let’s see what this is about”, if that makes sense?
