  • It’s raining “announcables” at the moment, with interesting developments this past week on the housing and finance front as city, state and federal Governments continue to poke at the broken system. Schemes include, government buying off the plan to give construction firms a leg up, cheap housing for essential workers, changes to lending rules, higher council rates for investors, and further crackdowns on airB&B.
While these may sound attractive from a media positioning perspective, they will hardly move the dial on the broken housing system in Australia. It’s a case of fiddling while Rome burns.
In fact, for more on the broken system, join me on my live show next Tuesday evening at 8pm Sydney, when I will be joined by Leith Van Onselen, Chief Economist at Nucleus Wealth as we discuss “The Great Housing Poker Game”.

If politicians want to make homes affordable, shouldn't they be collecting data to find out what people can actually afford across different incomes and aim house prices according to what people can afford? Otherwise, when they say affordable, it won't mean anything.

Yes let’s start telling people exactly what they can and can’t do with their own property and while we’re at it let’s find a way to make peoples property worth less than half of what they are right now so everyone is left in a negative equity situation and the wages for everyone that has a stake in the building industry gets cut in half as well . We could leave the Australian economy the envy of the world if we do that

I would take out a loan of 250k max, otherwise i wouldnt be able to make repayments above that. You need an income of 180k or more to afford an 800k loan. No one is arguing your view on whether governments or central bank policies are making it difficult for some people but with the policies they had and have had in place for many years you might have been a bit more accurate like Christopher Joye when interest rates were at 2% he was calling from the clouds to get in the market and at the same time your scenarios were saying stay out .
