Based on William Gibson's Broadway play and retaining its acclaimed cast, Arthur Penn's The Miracle Worker tells the true story of Helen Keller (Patty Duke), an Alabama girl struck blind and deaf as a baby after an elevated fever. Enter Annie Sullivan (Anne Bancroft), a partially-blind woman assigned the task of teaching Helen sign language. After first separating Helen from her over-protective parents (Victor Jory and Inga Swenson), Annie begins the arduous process of teaching the girl.

I think that Miss keller and Captain keller felt helpless and unable to teach Helen and discipline her..they weren't teachers and needed the help of a person working with blind children.
True, but even if she wasn't deafblind Helen would have been just as much of a spoiled materialist brat as the rest of her Reconstructionist world who let her do what she wanted.
I agree. I mean sure she's deaf-blind, but she'd still be spoiled even if normal. The parents were part of Annie's frustrations, because of their enabling.
You have to understand the time and context. In that time, disabled people were seen as helpless and unteachable and even an embarrassment. The Keller family kept Helen at home because they couldn’t bear shutting her away in a sanitarium (terrible living conditions for the inmates.). They really didn’t expect Anne to do more than care for Helen and perhaps manage her behavior. They never considered that she could be educated and taught to communicate. They allowed Helen’s bad behavior because they didn’t believe it was possible to teach her better.
As for Helen, touching, smelling and tasting (family members and the food) was the ONLY way she could interact with them. Once Anne began teaching her communication she was able to “talk” and interact with her family like any normal child.

So glad they both won the Oscar for their performances here. The whole movie centered around their duo, it literally could have not worked without their strong acting game.

i love their relationship!! my favorite part is when Jimmy recites the story from the Bible about the man and the angel wrestling, and the man says, "i won't let you go until you bless me" and the angel blesses him, and gives the man a new name.
and, before he sits back down, he turns to Anne, and says, "Oh, you angel."

@@B501M I also like the part where Jimmy goes to the garden house one night because he heard Annie calling out his name. Turns out she was dreaming of her late brother, Jimmy, who died as a child. They discuss him for a bit and then he randomly tells her, "You'd be quite a handsome girl if it weren't for your eyes." She takes offense and retorts, "You'd be quite a gentleman if it weren't for your manners." He just laughs. 😂 He questions the wisdom of this venture and suggests that Annie have some pity and let Helen be. "Or," he teases, "will you teach me?" She slams the shutters in his face. 🤣
*James Keller* was 19 and *Anne Sullivan* was 20 when these events transpired in the spring of 1887. Both were very attractive when young. I bet there was flirting going on, particularly on his part. *Annie,* a feisty Yankee girl from the wrong side of the tracks, must have seemed exotic to *Jimmy.* She definitely was a far cry from the genteel Southern belles he was used to.

FUN FACT: The girl that plays Hellen Keller (Patty Duke) in this 1962 version is the same woman who played Annie Sullivan in the 1979 TV version of this film.
We had to recreate this scene in my language arts class (7th) and i got choose to play Anne and we all did great, I can't remember the male yelling at Anne but my own BOYFRIEND was playing him so we were yelling at each other 😂

Honestly, WHO would let their child eat from other peoples plates like that??? Even if they had the conditions Helen did, it’s absolutely no excuse! Why would being deaf and blind give a person the right to go around & eat from other peoples plates??? She can still eat her own food right in front of her at a table like everybody else. So glad Anne Sullivan stood up to this ridiculousness of the Kellers so they could see how foolish it really was.
You would be SHOCKED & HORRIFIED at the lengths that some parents of autistic/special needs kids will go to to enable/pacify their kids!
they thought she was mentally deficient and couldn't be taught table manners - her brother says as much earlier in the film. Anne saw that it wasn't so - she was deaf-blind but her brain worked fine.
@katiejohnston988 My understanding is that Helen Keller was born into a relatively well off family of that time. If she had been born to poorer or lesser educated parents she may have been abandoned or left at an orphanage or she may have been put in an asylum or institution. T he Keller family seemed to be well educated but they did not know how to properly train Helen and that is where the Miracle Worker came in. Of course it was good that she taught Helen how to have better manners as well as how to use sign language and communicate better than just be a tantrum-ish child. But also it seems that at that time, there were fewer techniques to teach blind and deaf children.

If i were Annie i wouldn't have let Helen eat from my plate neither..It's disgusting,with Helen's filthy hands she takes food from everybody's plate.yuck! Good that Annie didn't tolerate this bad manner and didn't listen to the parents who had no authority and let helen did what she wanted whereas she could use a fork and spoon.
This almost reminds me of an episode of Supernanny in a way, LOL!!!

During these times most people would institutionalize the child. This man loved his daughter, he just didn't know how to teach her things. He didn't enable her, he simply let her live in peace and roam how she pleased. Helen didn't do the things she did out of misbehaving, don't forget she was born disabled.
She was NOT born disabled, she contracted an "unknown" illness when she was 19 months, which caused her to become deaf and blind.
They did enable her behaviour. Yes it's better then hellen being in an institution but many parents allow their disabled children to behave badly because they either do not beleive the child is mentally capable or they beleive the child will die soon. For a disabled child to become a successful adult the parents and teachers must Try to instill good behavior, independence and maturity. Have you seen what became of the real Hallen keller? She wrote books and essays and learnt how to speak. There's video footage of her. Imagine if her parents didn't allow the teacher to interview. Hallen would of been an adult still picking food off of people's plates instead of the activist she became.

I KNOW!!! Like it was one thing for them to feel sad for her due to her conditions. But to allow her to eat from other peoples plates is just outrageous. They probably thought it didn’t matter since she couldn’t even see where her plate or utensils were. So to make things easier for themselves, they didn’t even bother to teach her any table manners or table etiquette which was a huge mistake.

@@RevolutionUtena I was actually the same, until I looked up the script. Anne Bancroft’s acting is brilliant, but she probably delivered the dialogue too rapidly, along with mixed Irish accent; the physical movement of the scene and mono audio makes it difficult too.
Although I do love the line ‘I know an ornery tantrum well enough when I see one and a *badly* spoilt child!’.

@@ColliCub I don't know why they gave Annie an Irish accent in this film. She was born/grew up in Massachusetts. Her parents were Irish immigrants, but she was not raised by them. She was a ward of the state.

I will always be grateful to people like Anne who have the decency and kindness to never give people special treatment or expect any less of them even when they have limits. Allowing Helen to become a savage and not even at least learn table manners was a disgrace on her parents' part and honestly.... it's kind of abusive. Even disabled children deserve guidance, discipline and to be taught basic skills. She was disabled not a barbarian. As a mother myself, I will stand by on the hill that spoiling a child is in fact abusive because you are crippling them.

Those are not sunglasses, they were prescription glasses that she needed to wear at all times ...which you would know if you watched the film. Annie was visually impaired and had to have surgery on her eyes. The glasses were to protect her vulnerable eyes from getting too much light because of the surgery.

Yes, the real, young Helen Keller was like this. No exaggeration. The entire family spoiled/overindulged her, because they pitied her. She was not disciplined nor educated properly, until Annie Sullivan came along.
