Always great to hear your thoughts about the game as well as any other issues you may have about a game you do a run through for. That's why I watch. Keep up the good work.
I have absolutely no issue with you expressing your opinions on thematic matters that aren't about the gameplay itself. Your views are interesting, and if I ever disagree, so what? Contrasting views make one think. Keep up the great work.
It's funny that you said the thing about the bear theme because I was wondering why they didn't just do a zoo with many types of animals. I still plan on getting this though as it does look very fun.
I think I'd prefer Cottage Garden exactly for the reason you prefer Barenpark: the multiple objectives make it feel more Euro-ey, and we already have a lot of these objective-driven games. I like a refresher. Plus: cats over bears, any time! :-)
I'm always on the lookout for lighter gateway games to bring in new people to my weekly meetup. I'm so happy you did a runthrough because I've been looking at this game and at the time had picked up The Captain is Dead instead. Definitely going to grab this one now.
Woah better than Patchwork? I'm eyeing this as a multiplayer extension of Patchwork (It's winning me over more than Cottage Garden). Thanks for doing this game! I appreciate you bringing attention to your issues with the theme. The theme doesn't bother me as much, but I like that you brought attention to some real world issues.
The theme does bother me, a lot, and I thought Rahdo did a very good job of expressing those issues...but yes, for me also..."better than Patchwork" is what's left ringing in my ears at the end.
just for clarification, i didn't say it was an objectively better game than patchwork (that's debatable)... i just said i enjoyed it more than patchwork, by a sizable margin actually :)
No worries, when I mention you saying "better than Patchwork," I definitely meant that as shorthand for "one experienced gamer whose personal opinion is useful to me enjoyed it more," not anything like, "Rahdo claims the authority to pronounce this game objectively better." This is a week-old thread, but you had replied to several of these, and you can rest assured that most of us--surely--do understand the full context, even though we might oversimplify for brevity in an internet comment.
Let's assume that accounts for the parking lot, according to your source there are 700 in the US and EU (couldn't find a world count, much higher i assume). 9,100 acres :P
@@rahdo on a recent BGG Barenpark forum someone asked about reprints and it appeared, I could be wrong, someone from the company said in Sep 2020 they are planning for re-prints.
I'm not really sure the theme of a bear park is any worse than the themes in Agricola and a myriad of other games... The bears are not being slaughtered for food... What is worse: A cow being slaughtered for food or a Koala bear looked after in a theme park?
Thanks Richard, great run through. I was tossing up getting cottage garden or not, definitely think I'll pick up this instead. I like the idea of trying to get greater exposure for animal welfare issues as well as highlighting japanese bear parks to allow people to form their own opinions. Have you played it with the goof Paulo identified (must place next to other pieces)? I can only assume it makes a tighter, thinkier puzzle element.

wow, really? attacking an artist because you don't like their cartoon style? this makes no sense to me. his art style is loved by many (myself included) and he's a classically trained artist to boot (see his cover art for mercator for example). does the world really need more snark like this?
When it comes to "worst of humanity" treatment of bears, the award goes to China hands down. Some bears live their entire lives in a cage so small they can't turn around in.
yup, i actually went on a 5+ minute rant about the whole subject, but then decided to edit it out, as i didn't want to get troll swarmed again for being a 'snowflake'
Rahdo Those are worse than the "dog farms'. Not saying I consent those, but some of those that "function properly" sacrifice the animals in similar terms as of other domestic animals that are put down. The Bear parks and other places where they hold wildlife are way more terrible. I'm glad modern circuses are shifting towards not using animals. Slowly but steady I guess is better than no change.
I probably won't be getting this, because of the theme. Really wish it were something more fantastical like a dinosaur park. Would feel much better about playing it.
well it's a good thing i didn't say that it's better than patchwork! i was careful to say that i enjoyed it more, which is a different thing :) i very rarely edit vids, though youtube does let me excise bits using a 'trim tool'. i did it here because i figured it was probably a smart idea to cut out my 5+ minute rant against real-world bear parks and bile farms...

can't argue cat v bears :)

Great points made. I'm picking this game up but it's good to know this stuff.
wow. you moved this up on my watch list saying it's his best game ( same designer as imhotep, cacao, archaeology, and sushi go)

I really wish the theme would be building a theme park with carousels and rollercoasters.
that would have been SOOOOO much more awesome
how much natural habitat is lost for yet another theme park?
worldwide average themepark size is 13 acres, according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.

Do you know if the re-print of Barenpark in Sep of 2020 is with new artwork or as is just more prints?
i can't imagine they would change the art. did you hear somewhere that they are?

The theme alone makes this one better than Patchwork or Cottage Garden. For me at least.
Maybe the theme should bother me more, but the artwork bothers me more. Does anyone know when the next printing will come out?
supposedly first quarter this year, last i heard...
How are the components? Thick cardboard pieces?
not super thick, but not thin either. just kinda normal quality tiles

yup, i've played it correctly, and it's even better that way (as it makes the game more challenging)
Will you be at GenCon this year or just Essen? Thanks
nope :(

Attacking? Just my opinion. I can't get over that art sorry. My loss.
I think Klemenz is amazing but I gotta admit that your comment made me lol
I don't like his style in general, but in this game I think it fits well.

Better than Patchwork?!?!
better? that's pretty subjective. but i can objectively say i enjoyed it more
