Ballads are more popular in Korea. But when you talk about recognition you may be talking about globally. But if it doesn't get recognition it's because people don't like ballads or they just have not discovered it yet. Because when people discover Korean ballads they just can't go back.

There are few k-pop idols with outstanding skills like BaDa.
Most of the k-pop idols do not exceed the age of 30. This is a shorter period than an athlete.
Only singers with really good singing ability can survive.
In Korea, it is the same as above. I don't know the situation in other countries.

but To be honest, most Koreans also listen to Korean ballads, trots, and other genres of songs

What many people just approaching k-pop now don't realize (and I'm talking in general, not you guys!!) is that Korean music industry is and was big many years ago and not about pop and idols. Not only groups, but soloists too.
There is a mix of beliefs in the Korean peninsula, but if you see the amount of christian people there are and how they conduct their mass... Back in 2008-2010, my 2 roommates (Korean working at Samsung in Madrid) would invite me all the time, they sang in the choir of their church. They sing when they gather. And they mostly used to listen to RnB, Soul, Gospel... HipHop. Looking back to my early 2000s, I noticed that that's what drew me in to Korean music (as I didn't find as much in Japan, where I resorted to rock/metal and pop, although there is!).
I'm a forever listener of RnB/Soul/Funky music, and I found Koreans were doing a pretty neat job at that, so I started listening to them more and more (also thanks to Korean movies first and dramas after)... then came Rain :| ... You should do a throwback about him, by the way, I bet Michelle can guide you and enjoy the reaction :_)

Did you enjoy YG's first girl group performance? Big Mama is a group jointly created by yg and m-boat. Before Big Bang, yg created yg's image. There's an image of ugly but talented singers debuting in Korea. It's because of the debut song breakaway. The music video was about this. Beautiful models lip-syncing on the stage and Big Mama singing hard behind the stage. The music video brought sensations from Korean society and was a huge hit with the music video. After that, yg became an agency that raised real singers, not lip syncers with pretty faces.
