Fun fact: originally the performer was supposed to only sing the first part, in fact the second part was not even for the Diva Plavalaguna scene and was supposed to just be background music for Leeloo's action scene, but the actress improvised the dance and the whole vocalization; you can see at the end of this video she starts cracking because she wasn't supposed to sing and dance any of that, it was all improvised. Luc Besson liked this so much that he specifically extended the Diva performance and changed the coreography of the Leeloo fight scene so that it overlap with it. Very talented performer!!
THIS is soooooo beautiful!!! It's a shame we never got to see the Diva's Full song with dance on the movie screen! Hoping that a special edition 4K DVD would include THIS scene!
i am in love with this girl. seriously, i can feel it, especially when she gave that interview youve uploaded 10y ago. thank you man. this girl is just good and natural, and beautiful, i hope she's happy and in peace somewhere
its the best. i can see why he might have felt the need to cut it that way, he didn't want to push her too hard. but not including the unedited opera was a miss in terms of creating depth to the lore around the movie world's mystic traditions matching the real world's club scene at the time and those holy vignettes that you try to hold on to. a strange scene as he left her for Mila and there she is holding this place of transition in the film from hope to mystic certainty.
it actually does, i think. not the story part of the plot, but the emotional part. it was the important breakpoint that has shown Lilu is vulnerable, whatever kind of "supreme being" she might be, and however cool she can fight. Without it, the rest of the movie would make no sense.
I just realized: she is, within the context of her species, basically dressed to look as if she was naked. Like when a human is dressed in a spandex overall that perfectly matches their skin tone.
Mai Wenn should know that her act was the must beautiful fron the hole movie..may be for her that after the hole preparation the scene was too short but it was of great impact and the message was sent...
True IMA SUMAC i loved her singing voice as a little boy because of my beautiful mother my mother taught me so much about the universe god bless her soul
She did a beautiful job conveying the passion and emotion of the singer through her movements! I can totally understand why the actress felt disappointed that the scene didn't go uninterrupted in the film.
Jason Andrews - I respect your opinion, but it makes me wonder if you're blind. This was ridiculous in the worst way. It's just awful. Thank goodness for editing!!!
I love this movie, the part of the diva, and this scene... but honestly I think the director knew what he was doing in the editing of this scene: her performance had a mysterious quality and was much more impressive, when you're only catching glimpses of it... and I think he picked the best gestures.
I'm glad they didn't use the full footage in the movie. It would have been too much of her. I noticed some moves that were edited in which I liked in the movie better. I feel like she broke character toward the end. Not sure if she was trying to catch up with the music and vocals or improvising. Even though parts of her performance was cut, I believe they highlighted the best parts and even added a little to make it better. I love how she looked at 3:30. She looked the most like an alien from that angle
And shes not an actress. The girl that was supposed to performdidnt show up and he begged hee to do it. Still terrible and the reason for it not being shown on the movie.
Sorry, but Maïwenn (Le Besco) est bien une actrice avec environ 20 films à son actif (is still an actress, last movie in 2015) et une réalisatrice moins productive. Elle n'a réalisé que 5 films reconnus ("Polisse", only known in France I suppose - 5 movies as director). She was Luc Besson girl's friend during the making off "the fifth element". The real opera singer didn't want to play the Diva for the movie. Maïwenn accepted to play the Diva as an experience ; she was just in doubt for the playback and the choregraphy.
for me, it was that she knew what the song was about and was acting it out. at this point the singer is calling for her lover she thought she heard, she had been abducted and she was telling him that she had escaped his enemies and that she wanted him to rest (take refuge) at the fountain. but in actuality she was is hearing fantom voices and is going crazy....supper sad
Many parts -namely that one- were edited. In fact I_thought_ I recalled hearing that a few notes were swapped with musical a instrument, but maybe not.
***** When composer Eric Serra showed soprano Inva Mula (who dubs the voice of the Diva) the sheet music for the Diva Dance, she reportedly smiled and relayed to him that some of the notes written were not humanly possible to achieve because the human voice cannot change notes that fast. Hence, she performed the notes in isolation - one by one, as opposed to consecutively singing them all together and they digitized the notes to fit the music. There are a few moments when you can hear the differences in the vocal tones of The Diva's voice.
This performance never will be reach by anybody. It's more than the song and the artist, is the deep feeling she deposit on this minutes what make unbelievable the presentation, I past all this years believing that more than a half of the sound was sound effects, WOW What a supernatural voice for a human female being. God, is a fantasy on real life. Mula Tchako you are a waking angel voice. Thanks for let us know you exist.
Mai Wei gave a stand out performance that amazes! I have seen her performance 20 times at least and every time I am see struck by what she achieved! Beautiful, exotic and beautiful, I can see she really is that Diva in real life! Stunning!
I know she was disappointed, but he really did a great job editing her performance. It made it seem more powerful somehow, because we don't always see her.
That song, it's been a while! "towards the end, because a human voice can't change pitches that fast", I thought too. But I juste stumble across the article "Girl Sings The Opera From Fifth Element Considered Humanly Impossible" where they show Victoria Hovhannisyan performing it pretty accurately at The Voice in Russia. (That's what brought me here)
she is amazing.. her song is one of my favorite parts of the movie.. even in the makeup you could see her beauty.. now to see the real person i am even more amazed..
Masterful... Don't worry miss, your performance as brief as it was provides the musical backdrop for the entire production. You can not think about the 5th element without this song playing in the background...
It was this scene that really blew me away as a child :) I had never seen anything like the Fifth Element before and this scene impressed me the most. The Diva, the opera house, the audiences costumes, everything! If it was 1996 when this was released then I would have been 5 years old. Now I'm 25 and seeing this haha
Thank you for posting this. The Fifth Element is more than one of the greatest movies of our time. Like an enigmatic fractal, the Fifth Element's complex but simple weave of darkness and light is timeless.
I just can't get over it how GOOD and PERFECT her voice is!! Especially the parts where she switches the tones so quickly! like around 4:30! can't get over it and can't get enough! I've never heard something like this..never saw a singer like her before!
just so you know it, this recording isn't totally real, the hard parts are made with a computer. But there's a girl named Laura who does it for real, search it on youtube
What an exceptional performance in its entirety, without the visual distraction of silly fight scenes. Thank You for posting this video c'est magnifique!!! Regards all the way from St . Petersburg, Russia.
Yes! This is what I've been looking for! That was a great dance move she had done and the song! The song is beautiful. She has a beautiful voice. I as a vocalist think that it would be nice if the human voice could change that quickly and stay on key.
Of all things noticed in the Fifth Element, this character was the most remembered. I thought she was fantastic. Always wondered who played the part. I'm spell bound! Love her performance!
Thanks for putting this up. The Diva scenes are brilliant, not just for the Diva of course, but for Bruce Willis who stares in wonder, while still looking great! I guess that's called great acting without words, or something!
Who's still listening to this in 2017? I was 6 when this film was released and that was my favorite scene in the whole film, it's so magical it's almost like The Diva can speak to our souls!
I just love it! It creates the desire in me to hear more of this creative mix of opera and electronica. Such a wonderful, soul reaching, high vibrational and uplifting/emotional cocktail. There is clearly a market for this fusion, and a new musical genre was born!!!
Still love the Diva, just finished watching my dvd for about the 30th time, my favourite go to movie for in the background when I am sewing, but I always stop and watch the Diva. You brought a very unusual character to life.
They only edited out at least 25-50% of her performance really. They actually kept all of her characters' parts that were spectacle, animated, and movie worthy for the film. My opinion she had really nothing to be bummed over about it. This scene in the movie was actually one of my favorite parts and am glad I finally have the opportunity to see this now. I study stage, directing, film, acting, singing, and editing. It's a lot of hard work. I'm very glad she got that part. I'm just stunned she's French. I thought she was a black girl to be honest. Then I slowly started to do this research because I was sick and tired of myself assuming and theorizing who was behind the DIVA. I see Hollywood just did what they pulled for the Star Wars franchise. Two different people for one role... and they still nailed it and made a masterpiece.
What Pepe Perez says is true. If you want to here more of her search for Inva Mula. If you want to hear what other opera singers with the "coloratura soprano" voice can do without any help from electronics, search here for video "Amazing coloratura sopranos of all times".
I bought the soundtrack cd years ago just for this piece. Both parts are magnificent and this is the first time I've seen it whole. Thanks for the upload.
It was angelic to me all the times I heard and saw this magnificent clip from the movie. People saw enough of you that it didn't matter if they shortened it. Your interpretation along with the beautiful vocals will be etched in those that saw and heard this. Head up...your were perfect.
This was one of the movies that I remember from childhood. It's actually of my favorite ones. I was 4 years old when I saw the movie, now i'm 20 and still loving it! ♡ ♡ ♡.
I am glad I got to see the green screen version. While the movie version is good, you can see the edits took the smoothness from the original and the dance became jerky and stilted. (My opinion) I can understand why she (Mai Wenn) was disappointed in the final version since it looks like she put a lot of creativity and work into the movements.
This song was the reason I loved the fifth element as a kid.
+Pastiche Grizzly
That an many other things also. This movie is by far the best. I love it.
the movie is awesome and she is beautiful and her voice is beautiful
Pastiche Grizzly : A lot of depth and meaning this movie has in it.
This song is why I ripped out my stomach to check for hidden stuff!
Pastiche Grizzly me too.
more than 20 years later and this is still amazing
this woman is a saint for saving this scene and stepping in when this role needed a face. all fifth element fans will be grateful forever!

Very talented performer!!
It is taking my breath away each time I watch it again... Sooo perfect
THIS is soooooo beautiful!!! It's a shame we never got to see the Diva's Full song with dance on the movie screen! Hoping that a special edition 4K DVD would include THIS scene!
She was wrong, even though she had a small part. We all saw and heard you!! I still cry evetytime i hear this song.
I don't care for the rest of the movie, but the Diva's scene is one of my favourite movie scenes ever.
i am in love with this girl. seriously, i can feel it, especially when she gave that interview youve uploaded 10y ago. thank you man. this girl is just good and natural, and beautiful, i hope she's happy and in peace somewhere
Bravo well done one of my favorites
This definitely feels other worldly
One of my all time favorite movies.
its the best. i can see why he might have felt the need to cut it that way, he didn't want to push her too hard. but not including the unedited opera was a miss in terms of creating depth to the lore around the movie world's mystic traditions matching the real world's club scene at the time and those holy vignettes that you try to hold on to. a strange scene as he left her for Mila and there she is holding this place of transition in the film from hope to mystic certainty.
My favorite part of the movie 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤😊😊😊
Ahh so there are some part edited. I quite amazed with this song. Even the hand movement she's perfect fot this diva role. No other can
Brilliant. Should have been shown in its entirity in the film. The fight scene doesn't really add to plot.
it actually does, i think.
not the story part of the plot, but the emotional part. it was the important breakpoint that has shown Lilu is vulnerable, whatever kind of "supreme being" she might be, and however cool she can fight. Without it, the rest of the movie would make no sense.
La mejor ópera de todos los tiempos, una genia todo
Very memorable scene best voice off all movies 🍿 👏 bravo
The actress didn't sing it, it was an albanian opera singer that sing this song 😁
I always felt that little side-step segment of her routine was awkward in the movie! They should have kept in this amazing choreography in!
The stones are...in me....
I just realized: she is, within the context of her species, basically dressed to look as if she was naked.
Like when a human is dressed in a spandex overall that perfectly matches their skin tone.
It’s by far my fav part of the film
Mai Wenn should know that her act was the must beautiful fron the hole movie..may be for her that after the hole preparation the scene was too short but it was of great impact and the message was sent...
Diva I love here
Diva is so graceful lovely and feminine 💙🩵
Rerelease with full Diva performance!;😆 Or even just a movie of the full Diva dance with the background cgi.
OMG i love this so much! 😭😭
Maiwenn absolutely aced this role and performance. Every moment of this is magic.
So, does an original recording exist without the synth bits? I've always wanted to hear the original performance.
And without the voice editing.
It’s a rehearsal, she was better in final cut
Of course..
And some part of the dance are different...
The director ended his marriage with her to marry Mila
And Mila ended it with the director to marry Paul Anderson lol
And somehow she predicted the plastic surgery
Obra maestra performance! She portrayed the Diva universe well. Exquisite otherworldly creation 😲🤯
Y si Ima Sumac hubiese cantado esto?
True IMA SUMAC i loved her singing voice as a little boy because of my beautiful mother my mother taught me so much about the universe god bless her soul
Beautiful performance, mesmerizing. Love 💝😘 it.
Espetacular maravilhosa interpretação!
She did a beautiful job conveying the passion and emotion of the singer through her movements! I can totally understand why the actress felt disappointed that the scene didn't go uninterrupted in the film.
Jason Andrews easy her hubby to be was porking Milla on the side.
Jason Andrews - I respect your opinion, but it makes me wonder if you're blind. This was ridiculous in the worst way. It's just awful. Thank goodness for editing!!!
354 people did not win the Gemini Croquette contest.

+FlyingShazbot I feel you man!!

+FlyingShazbot You and me both. Just... wow.
+FlyingShazbot *Looks and Bucket List* and... Check.
I love this movie, the part of the diva, and this scene... but honestly I think the director knew what he was doing in the editing of this scene: her performance had a mysterious quality and was much more impressive, when you're only catching glimpses of it... and I think he picked the best gestures.
Forget the movie! everyone remembers this, and her dance! LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanx for sharing!
i can die in peace!
Sang by the incredibly talented Inva Mula, an Albanian soprano.
yes it's very its Albanian soprano number 1in the world
EpiritPirro 5k was like 100k of today?
Alan Tan lol this was 1997 not 1960. 5k would've been like 8k
I thought it was Evgenia Laguna
The person who played the diva is a very attractive woman
Maiwenn, I'm sorry my dear but you are up for elimination. The time has come for you to lip sync for your life...
TheOnlyKevster Oh god, I almost choked laughing. ♥
AND DON'T FUCK IT UP.
TheOnlyKevster best comment ever
TheOnlyKevster I don't get the joke... 😢 can somebody explain ?

this actress is actually the director's ex girlfriend
ex wife
And shes not an actress. The girl that was supposed to performdidnt show up and he begged hee to do it. Still terrible and the reason for it not being shown on the movie.

i bet
some wife more like gf
did anyone think at 2:05 she looked confused for a second and had a telepathic vision of what will happen next
+Jeremy Hernandez that's the way I understood the first time I watched.
She felt it, like they have some bound...
lmbo...that was funny
for me I like to think is that she feels LeLo'a presence and knows who she is...
and know what her presence means too...
for me, it was that she knew what the song was about and was acting it out. at this point the singer is calling for her lover she thought she heard, she had been abducted and she was telling him that she had escaped his enemies and that she wanted him to rest (take refuge) at the fountain. but in actuality she was is hearing fantom voices and is going crazy....supper sad
4:28 - 4:38 is literally the most incredible sound to ever be produced by human vocal chords.
Many parts -namely that one- were edited. In fact I_thought_ I recalled hearing that a few notes were swapped with musical a instrument, but maybe not.
*****
When composer Eric Serra showed soprano Inva Mula (who dubs the voice of the Diva) the sheet music for the Diva Dance, she reportedly smiled and relayed to him that some of the notes written were not humanly possible to achieve because the human voice cannot change notes that fast. There are a few moments when you can hear the differences in the vocal tones of The Diva's voice.
4:34 was computer-edited, if you listen carefully you can hear the difference.
You should check out throat singing :)
Judith L Inva mula never computer edited, check out her videos you will be amazed.
I just adore how she giggles when she ends it all.
i've always thought the last part should last longer....
By far one of the the best movie song performances yet
This performance never will be reach by anybody. It's more than the song and the artist, is the deep feeling she deposit on this minutes what make unbelievable the presentation, I past all this years believing that more than a half of the sound was sound effects, WOW What a supernatural voice for a human female being. Very well performed. Beautiful. Finally I got the chance to see the diva. Performing whole.
I saw this movie when I was 17 years old. I still can't forget this song
Probably the best scene from 5th Element!
Phenomenal performance! I saw this movie many times and this is still one of my favorite scenes. She deserves an Oscar for that routine.
OMG! This performance was so UNDERRATED!!!...That woman deserves some kind of award and the costume designer as well. Magnificent performance!!!
I've seen lots of live singers do the song as well. Its freaking scary.
Arella17 they never said the whole song can't be sing by a human xD
she is amazing.. her song is one of my favorite parts of the movie.. even in the makeup you could see her beauty.. now to see the real person i am even more amazed..
One of the greatest performances ever.
One of my favorites!
If you song that good why would you feel so blue lol
nice
GOOD
Masterful... Don't worry miss, your performance as brief as it was provides the musical backdrop for the entire production. You can not think about the 5th element without this song playing in the background...
YASSSS!!!

One of my absolute favorite movies and scene! 💖💖💖
I freaking love that dance she does!!
Excellent...them moves!~
She makes me think of 7 of 9.

read the description.
This is so epic
Definitely worth preserving. Thank you.
What an exceptional performance in its entirety, without the visual distraction of silly fight scenes. Thank You for posting this video c'est magnifique!!! Regards all the way from St . Petersburg, Russia.
beautiful and awkward dance!!! genius!
Yes! This is what I've been looking for! That was a great dance move she had done and the song! The song is beautiful. She has a beautiful voice. I as a vocalist think that it would be nice if the human voice could change that quickly and stay on key.
Writer without words - it was so beautiful!
Großer Respekt an diese stimme!! Hab sie live gesehn und kann nur sagen das es ein wahrer Genuss ist dieser Stimme zu lauschen!!! Danke
Of all things noticed in the Fifth Element, this character was the most remembered. I thought she was fantastic. Always wondered who played the part. I'm spell bound! Love her performance!
I love the move she does at 3:50...
This is one of the most magical scenes in the movie.
Thanks for putting this up. The Diva scenes are brilliant, not just for the Diva of course, but for Bruce Willis who stares in wonder, while still looking great! I guess that's called great acting without words, or something!

Wow she is good, thanks . Loved the the movie.
She is a profesional soprano. There´s a lot of profesional sopranos. Listen opera, please
actor is different than singer
What Pepe Perez says is true. If you want to here more of her search for Inva Mula. If you want to hear what other opera singers with the "coloratura soprano" voice can do without any help from electronics, search here for video "Amazing coloratura sopranos of all times".
I love the moment between 4:24 and 4:28. when she throws her hands like the movie showed. Was pretty cool move. )
Glad I finally got to see this full rendition! She does a wonderful job synching to the vocal and purveying emotion.
I can do nothing but tip my hat to that breath taking performance. I am without words.
I remember being disappointed when they cut away from her as a child to go to the fight scene. I was mesmerized by her!
I bought the soundtrack cd years ago just for this piece. Both parts are magnificent and this is the first time I've seen it whole. Thanks for the upload.

best performance ever!! nobody can perform like her
No matter how many times I hear this, it still blows me away every time.
they should have left this whole perfomance, it was awesome...Mila ruined it with her fighting scenes for me...Diva is amazing
+Samus Kerrigan See the previous videos in this interview when she says she felt disappointed because Luc edited a lot out to the fight scene.
+Samus Kerrigan Yeah, right. Go ahead in a action movie and point the camera for more than five minutes in one direction. Who the fuck needs editing?
+Chuywaka dude l did, that's why l watched her whole perfomance, to see that Maiwen was right
+MashMashMusic dude they did show more than 5 minutes at one direction in many scenes of the movie....
Samus Kerrigan Example, please. You won't go without cuts.
I love that voice
