How To Play Guitar Solos WITHOUT A Pick - Beginner Guitar Lesson

- When you think about guitar solos, you probably imagine guitarists ripping it up with a pick in their hand. But some of the greatest lead guitar players abandon the pick altogether and just use their fingers. So in this lesson, Andrew Clarke is here to talk about how you can play guitar solos without using a guitar pick by looking at John Mayer and Derek Trucks.
Throughout this guitar lesson, you’ll learn about proper hand positioning for fingerpicking, the difference between using your fingernails and the pads of your fingers, how to mute the strings with both hands, flicking technique, and how to fatten notes using adjacent strings.
These techniques aren’t easy to pull off, so you may need to take your time with this lesson. At the end of the day, it’s all about developing your style and unique voice on the guitar. Don’t feel like you need to steal everything you learn in this lesson. Just use what sounds good to you.

Thanks for this. I always thought I was weird and not really “ playing “ the guitar properly for not being comfortable playing with a pick.
Idk why but using pick is harder for me
Same here, so sad.
Same.
Same with me. I play both electric and acoustic without a pic.
@@irishnomad1673 no offense, but does it sound good?
@@alexandreoliveira9702 I really only play in front of my wife. She loves it. She's the whole reason why I even started. If it wasn't for her, I probably would never have even picked up a guitar. She bought me my first guitar years ago for my birthday.
There's an electric guitar in church and I noticed, no ones been playing on it. And two of my picks are gone :(( So I asked the Pastor if i could practice it. And I'm a beginner! Wish me luck :)
I’m practicing bass to play for church 😃
How's the practice going?
Hope you dont play black metal in a church
Omg I totally forgot about this!.. Update: My parents bought me an acoustic guitar few months ago and I'm still learning! Though I stopped practicing in the church and focused myself in singing.
@@datrebbleclef600 It's fine, it's not a real church if their "pastor" uses guitars for "worship" lmao heretics.
My favorite finger player is Wes Montgomery, of course, as I’m 78 years old. I did see Luis Bonfa years ago and was highly impressed. He composed some of the Black Orpheus music! I guess my model has been Gene Bertoncini, particularly his album titled “Bridges”, accompanied by bassist Micheal Moore. They mix classical, jazz, Latin, etc. I have been looking for material on muting and getting more of a rhythmic feel into my playing, which is a mix of light classical, pop, easy jazz pieces, and folk played primarily on my 30 year old classical guitar. I also have a Gibson Charlie Christian model big box, one pickup, archtop that is the also about 30 years old
Nice overview vid. Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) makes me want to play lead /electric with fingerstyle more than anyone because he's so much more expressive than most pick players, and Bert Jansch makes me want to play acoustic fingerstyle more than anyone because of all the compositional possibilities he shows.
Loving the lessons Andrew and this couldn't come at a better time! I been playing without a pick lately and it's just what I needed! keep them coming!
Thank you for this, I'm a classically trained and find fast rock and blues playing tricky with fingers
This is a terrifically great lesson. Thanks for your generosity!
I learned a lot from this, thank you so much!
Great vid. There's hope 4 me. I studied 6 years of classical guitar and now decided to change to electric but dont get along well with peaks...
Same here my friend, flamenco and classical all my life and struggling with pick on electric. If I drop the pick I can do crazy solos with my fingers.
Same 😩
@@Nico-xf5cw practise & patience
This video just made a life changer for me in playing guitar
What a nice chap! Super teacher!
I'm practicing incorporating fingerstyle, while also retaining a plectrum, sometimes it just feels more natural for me pick with my fingers, so this video is a big help, interesting also to see the anchoring points.
thank you for this. it was quite informative... it is much easier to see what a guitarist is doing with their left (fretting) hand than it is with their right (picking).
I’ve developed my “own” style of playing mostly with my index finger both strumming and playing solos, but the outer side of my index finger nail tend to get file down from playing, and my preferable “tone” will be gone. That’s why I’m here searching for any video about playing with just the finger and here I stumble upon this video! And it’s amazingly see other ways the play without a pick!
This is learning! Thank you very my friend.
Ian Siegal, Samuel James and Cooper McBean...
Thanks for the breakdown, and illustrating the importance on muting.
Those are some names I haven't heard! I'll have to check 'em out.
Dont know why but the guy in the video is so likeable. Great lesson too!
Thank u for this lesson this really helped take care🙏🏼
This is the technique I've been missing... 👍
My favourite is Mark Knopfler 🎸.
Thank you for this video!.
He is the best I've seen, to date, for sure!
100 percent. Lindsey Buckingham is right there too ..
My favorite finger style player on electric is Mark Knofler. Favorite song - Brothers In Arms.
I Play Fingerstyle Bass ,and been playing a little acoustic guitar, I just bought an electric Guitar and want to play fingerstyle and thought this was a great lesson of techniques and sounds from fingerstyle electric guitar ,Thankyou.
I came from a flamenco background so this is real easy for me! Thanks for the great vid!
great lesson sir
Thank you!
thanks for this!
Thanks for the upload. Nicely done and very helpful. My favourite is definitely Mark Knopfler.
Thanks for watching! Knopfler is awesome!
Thnx 4 vid! Richie Kotzen picks it quite awesome. Mark Knopfler too.
thanks a lot for this video, one of the best I've found on soloing with fingers. Influence? Jeff Beck, but I'll never try to copy him. I'd just like to get rid of my pick and get more freedom with my fingers ;-)
Nice lesson. When I started playing slide is when I began to use fingers only. Now, it's rare for me to use a pick for regular guitar playing.
Awesome job
Thank you 🙏🏽🎸
The video was more about muting than finger picking but I learned a lot anyway, I really like it 👍
Ty man this tought my son how to play tysm
Thank you milo yiannopoulos
thank u so much
I play only Acoustic
All these techniques apply to acoustic too :)
Awesome video and tutorial - thanks so much.
Mark Knopfler and Jeff Beck are two heroes of mine who play with fingers rather than pick.
Any tips on how to play fast solos with fingers, perhaps like Stevie Ray Vaughan? He probably used a pick but wondering how to do his style with fingers?
very good lesson, these techniques are very similar to slide guitar (muting). thanks
Mark Knopfler, Lindsey Buckingham, James Taylor would be my faves. As a beginner, I'm not quite at the point of incorporating the lesson but I do spend some time while learning new chords finger picking through them. Given time, I'll get there. Right now, I'm doing a lot of unintentional muting; I'll clean that up before I go toward intentional stuff. Enjoyable video, thanks!
All awesome players! Totally makes sense. Thanks for watching. And happy playing! :)
My favorite is Robby Krieger of the Doors.
I'd have to say David Knopfler off the top of my head. Those guys you mentioned are great too. I was just messing around with this style, (I have before) and this could be addictive. You go from one pick to having 5. Of course there is hybrid picking, but this could help you get better with that. If I never used a pick, I don't think my fingers could stand up for marathon guitar sessions. lol. Ouch! Great lesson. Made a lot of sense. Now I see why the thumb goes forward. It's because you tilt your hand. Thanks for posting. : )
autocrow Yea John Mayer for sure in the blues, he pretty much only uses picks for acoustic
now i will continue playing guitar without pick because i already lost the fine motors of my fingers. i almost giveup untill i saw this video.. thankyou..
One of my fav guitarists doesnt use a pick…well very rarely. Andy from the reverb demos. Lol. A lot of great guitarists dont use a pick. I got in habit of not using a pick when i first started learning guitar i would borrow my buddies old acoustic guitar and i didnt have picks or would lose them. So i just started strumming like i had a pick without one and that kinda just evolved into a crude fingerstyle and just advanced from there.
Now im in the school of thought of the people from main comment, a pick actually makes it harder for me to play
Due to a right hand injury I play with my fingers rested on the forward part of the pick guard and use my thumb only for soloing.
more videos on improvising plsssssss
Okay. :)
Nils Lofgren, although uses a thumbpick.
Albert King also plays without a pick. Robby Krieger, George Thorogood. In addition to the others mentioned (knopfler and Jeff beck)
Derrick Trucks is number 1, obviously (plus, y'know Duane Allman). But I love Lindsey Buckingham as well. However, the guy that mainly inspired me to play with my fingers is Ritchie Kotzen. The man is a beast. He doesn't play blues, per se, more hard rock and metal, but goddamn can he shred with his fingers. Dude's amazing. I wish I could do what he does. I mean, I play punk rock mostly, and some metal, and when I do, I use a pick. But I'm really trying to get to where I only play blues with my fingers. I'm still better with a pick, but I'm definitely getting there. Awesome vid!
Can I do these on acoustic guitar?
Yes, you can!
Ben Poole plays amazing finger style
Jeff Beck uses his thump and sometimes his forefinger too.
i use my very own nails as my pick, idk if thats weird but i can play cool solos but the problem is my nail starts to get thin and more likely to worn out. anyway thanks for this vid
Been playing for over 2 years, Never used a pick except when I started but then decided I didn't like it so I learned without it.
I learnt to play by ear only (groan)... seriously though, great vid for newcomers to this approach. Could I just suggest something really eye-opening, learn some basic flamenco technique (you don't need the long nails for electric), it can feel and sound incredible!
Alan Hager is an amazing talent using his fingers: Portland, OR, playing with Curtis Salgado.
Chris buck is my fav and I kept losing my plecs so I learnt to use my fingers and now a plec feels weird 😳
I use this technique playing fingerstyle intrumentals... Like if you prefer playing guitar without pick...
Great video than you!!!
Can you play pinch harmonix with no pick. 🎸💓.
By far, my favorite of all is Lindsey Buckingham. His finger style is amazing. Watch a video of him playing the song “Big Love”. Not the studio version, but a live version. I truly think you will very much enjoy it. All of his work with Fleetwood Mac is done finger style. A couple more of his songs that rock is “I’m So Afraid”, from the Dance album and a song called “Come”. Check them out.
Please make more pickles playing solo videos. There is a pretty big hole in this area and what I would consider a very important part of guitar playing.
I just transferred from classical , and couldn't figure out why my hand didn't fit, ....thanks
Well, i learned guitar playing fingerstyle many years ago, then took a break for a few decades. Now, i play some things with fingers, but mostly I play with a pick, and I'm MUCH better with the pick that i was.
Still, I'd like to experiment to see what sounds i like best.
This was somewhat helpful in learning Darrell Trucks & Meyer's styles, but you really didn't show how they play a multi-note riff. Even a scale would be helpful.
I have tried doing it with alternating fingers, as i would do on a Classical guitar, but with the strings closer together, and being steel instead of nylon, it's harder.
So, I'd like to know how they do that.
Is it okay if I use the nail on my index finger as a pick
But how do you make it with that electric sound though
Jeff Beck must rank high on the fingerstyle list...
My favorites are Lindsey Buckingham and Mark Knopfler
Yeeyy this is a great lesson! I really don’t know why, but playing with a pick feels so unnatural to me haha. Oh annndd Lindsey Buckingham is my favorite :)
So the string your are holding down is the one you need to pluck
nice lesson very helpful I just can't stand pics I kept dropping them I can't hold on to them they get caught in the strings I'm not accurate but with my fingers I'm better my favorite finger players are Jeff Beck and Mark Knopfler, Tommy Emmanuel, Albert King , Albert Collins and Wes Montgomery
Mark knopfler and a John Mayer ❤️
I was a acoustic guitarist at my beginning. Then I find fingerstyle as much more cooler than pick. But now I am facing issue while playing electric guitar using pick.
Lindsay Buckingham very underrated
Sadly underrated and I don’t understand why.
Actually i use my index finger and my thumb finger nails to play solos and if i have to strum i use nails of my other fingers to down strum and the nails of my thumb finger to up strum . Is there anyone like thatM
Mark Knopfler, Jared James Nichols are two more great lead players. They seem to use their thumbs a lot more, however.
Also, Wes Montgomery who's all thumb
Pheww i thought u cant play elec. Guitar without pick but lucky i can finally play using finger
I was trained in classic guitar and when I try to use pick it is much harder to use
I always somewhat combine tirando and apoyando technique
Finally. Some good food.
My favourite fingerstyle player is either Lyndsey Buckingham or Robby Krieger, hard to say, so many but certainly those two are at the top.
Jeff Beck, my friends...Jeff Beck. Check out Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott’s right here on the Tubes of You. You’re welcome.
After that many scratches Andrew realized that pick is not good for him
Hah, thin nitro finishes scratch a little too easily. Gives the guitar character though. :) - Andrew
i'm a beginner and string muting seems so intimidating ... here to gather some knowledge but damn i feel like i'll never be able to do this
Just got my first electric after playing acoustic for a while, and even though I can play on the fret board easily, my right hand isn’t used to plucking with pickups. It’s fun to learn what to fix though
@@jakub8302 I see ! and canyou see yourself nailing string muting with enough practice ? I wish you can ! Good luck and specially have fun !
Fabien Bourdier Yeah I’ve already noticed some improvements. I’m able to pluck more accurately now and mute slightly better. I’m really focusing on analyzing Mark Knopfler’s style since he plays without a pick like I do
@@jakub8302 awesome to hear ! thanks for the quick reply, it makes the electric guitar less intimidating to me ! I'm still on acoustic at the moment but i'm planning on buying an electric ..... once i make up my mind on which i want haha.
Fabien Bourdier yeah choosing the guitar is the tough part 😂 when you do start just make sure to keep the amp at a clean tone as it will make your mistakes easier to recognize. If you crank it with too much gain and stuff it will just be a nightmare to your ears at first 😂
See and listen to Matteo Mancuso about his hand position and music. Revolution is on the air !
Jimi Vaughn comes to mind.
I play better with my fingers,
The pick turns. And my fingers find the strings better..
Nice video though..
im trying to play without a pick cause using fingers helps me to be more musical
Melanie faye
Mark Knopfler best ever!
Tommi Iommi And Jerry Garcia. Hybrid fingers ;)
Totally!
I think Freddie Mercury played Crazy Little Thing Called Love at Live Aid without a pick
Yeah. That world famous guitar great - Freddie Mercury!
😂. What a dumb comment
hOW to pLAY BlUes
I lean towards Lindsey Buckingham and a Jeff Beck, so I use a pretty different technique
I forgot about Lindsay. He's a fantastic finger player.
Lindsey had some ripping solos too
ua-cam.com/video/dGykwC0fdJ4/v-deo.html
Richie Kotzen anyone?
Matteo Mancuso
Hozier would be my influence, he never uses a pick on electric.
You forgot to mention Mark Knopfler
You said solos, but you didn't show how to play fast solos with out a pick. How can you play arpeggios and fast guitar solos with fingers?
Lyndsay Bukingham cant play with a pick he said
I am blind and I don't use a pic. Because I didn't know that you supposed to when I was little because of me being blind. Also I play backwards with strings upside down but I learn by myself and I have my own style my own flavor here you can watch the video. It's really cool
ua-cam.com/video/bOyChDM2cFI/v-deo.html
I also play drums and piano.
When I thought that nobody plays with their fingers. I was wrong. I've been trying to learn how to play with a pic but it's difficult because I'm so used to playing with my finger
