Awesome song. One of the best songs of the 70's era. Lying in bed, eyes closed with the headphones on, and literally getting lost in the song. Never fails to produce a tear or two....

another great song that comes to mind is "Southern Cross " by Crosby ,Stills,Nash and Young .Great visual images that roll around in your head and make you wish for a Carribian night drinking rum and swinging in a hammock.

If I'm not mistaken this song marks the first time a R&R band enlisted the assistance of an orchestra to create the backing instrumentals. It may be the Boston Philharmonic but I'm not sure.

Both Beatles and Supremes and others used orchestras in many popular hits from the early 60's on.

I believe he was referring to pirating and privateering in the Caribbean which is usually referred to as the golden age of the Pirates.
That is the era that spawned all the the legends and stories (and theme parks)

Thankyou that is exactly what I was referring to.
I believe Capt. Jack Sparrow was somewhat inspired by Blackbeard who was killed in N.C.
I know they were all bad people in real life, but the image is still exciting.
Some pirates worked for the crown. Sir Fracis Drake is probally the most famous pirate of all time and was knighted by Elizabeth I for it.

The Beatles definitely did in the 60s. This came out in 1970

TO JOHNNY DEEP, FOR THE ONE THING I LIKE TO SAY TO YOU, I DRANK AND SMOKED MANY YEARS, NEVER GOT HELP, WENT TO AAA ONCE, BUT STILL LIVE A LIFE I CAN'T SEEM TO CONTROL, NOW THAT I HAVE STRUGGLED AND NEVER NEW IF I COULD LIVE A NORMAL LIFE WITH OUT DRANKING, I GO COUPLE OF DAYS WITH OUT, THEN WANT TO GO SIT AND SMOKE AND DRANK, AFTER 25 YRS, OH I HAVE PRAYED, MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED FOR MANY THINGS, BUT THIS ONE PRAYING FOR MY SELF JUST SEEMS HARDER, ITS KIND OF SCARY TO LIFE A LIFE THATS NOT NORMAL FROM DRANKING, ANY WAY YOU ARE NOT ALONE, YES I'M GOING TO SAY IT GOD IS YOUR FRIEND, WHATS IMPOSSIBLE WITH MAN IN POSSIBLE WITH GOD, GOD HAS BLESSED YOU, BUT GOD GIVETH AND TAKE A WAY, SO I AM SHARING THIS BECAUSE I THING THERE IS A SPIRIT WORKING IN YOUR SOUL , WE CAN'T SERVE TWO MASTERS, SEEK THE LIGHT AND MAY IT SHINE ON YOU, YOU ARE SPIECAL.

A big thumbs up to a classic song by Grand Funk Railroad, not the silly slide show of fictional pirate movie.

You could be right, but I thought it was the Moody Blues. But then again it could be American R&R instead of British. I'm not sure, but definetley something to research....
